A Requiem is a Mass for the repose of the souls of the dead. This last week we all witnessed the people of France choose death; the death of their culture and country thus a Requiem is appropriate. What more appropriate Requiem than that sung for Louis XI of France.
Johannes Ockeghem (1410-1497) was the most famous composer of the Franco-Flemish School in the last half of the 15th century. In 1483 Louis XI the King of France Died. Ockeghem was nominally the court composer for the King. As a result the task fell to him to compose a Requiem. It is 534 years old and the first/oldest such work to come down to us and is the most beautiful. (Sorry it beats out Mozart–hands down) And obviously with the death of France it is a fitting memoriam.(MGTOW spell check doesn’t know this IS a word!)
Unfortunately I could not find the entire Mass so here are four parts:
Introitus: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rpEZlhf_ETw
Kyrie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1g1gthunDFQ
Requiem aeternam https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kcRku6UL9YQ
Graduale https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwDqDf4dIkcThe Requiem is a very sad and tragic piece of music and we don’t want to leave France in a depressed state—so the second work recalls France in all it Glory.
Louis Marchand (1669 – 1732) was a French Baroque organist, harpsichordist, and composer. Born into an organist’s family, Marchand was a child prodigy and quickly established himself as one of the best known French virtuosi of his time. He was the organist of numerous churches and, for a few years, the court organist of Louis XIV the Sun King. Marchand had a violent temperament and an arrogant personality, and his life was filled with scandals. Despite his fame, few of his works survive to this day, such as the organ pieces Grand dialogue en ut majeur (C)
The video for this work is pretty cool too. It is the French Royal Chapel at Versailles.
Au revoir France!
Thanks – always look forward to this.
You are right – this beats Mozart.thanks Man just found and added the Graduale

Anonymous2A great one from your series.
Top class music.
Love the details about the composer and historical context.French people don’t realize now that their fall will be bigger.
Recovery will be much longer and harder.Mac(a)ron said that he will do everything not to give the French people reasons to vote anymore for the nationalists.
If he succeeds, their nation will be pretty much over.
Maybe the borders of France will remain if they are lucky.Good stuff as usual. I look forward to this Friday thread, along with Friday in general. It is also the day that Terrence Popp usually puts out a new Redonkulas video.
Merci Monsieur Pete. (Thank you Mr. Pete)
J’aime ta musique chacque Vendredi. (I love your music every Friday.)
