Over the past couple of months there has been considerable grousing and distemper about the omission of harpsichord music. I have repeatedly point out it is Friday Night Organ; not Friday Night Harpsichord, but as always I’m a slave to the whims of the mob so tonight we abstain from what one critic called “that infernal box of whistles” and focus on the harpsichord. We’re going to stay with Bach for the moment but in the coming weeks I will expound further on the topic with works from the French suites and the well tempered Clavier I/II.
BWV 808: English Suite No.3 in G Minor
BWV 971: Italian Concerto in F Major

"It seems like there's times a body gets struck down so low, there ain't a power on earth that can ever bring him up again. Seems like something inside dies so he don't even want to get up again. But he does."

Pete, you’re never one to care about what the trolls on here think (and you’re all trolls!)
Screw em. Blast that organ baby!
Like a bird on the wire, like a drunk midnight choir, I have tried in my way to be free.

“that infernal box of whistles”
lol. thanks for keeping up your Friday uploads. I get a kick out of stopping in on Saturday. I’ve been listening to Wagner’s Rheingold. Trying to force myself to be a little more well rounded and cultural with tastes that range into the true oldies too.
Rock on.
Yes – organ or hapsichord it’s always a treat
Thank you sir.I had a friend with a complete CD set of the Ring Cycle from the Bayreuth festival in Bavaria. It was OK but for some strange reason (Even though I’m German) I’ve never been a big fan of Wagner. (And not because he was so vicious an anti-Semite he could have made THX blush. Nor is it that I’m such a big fan of Mendelssohn, whom Wagner hated because Mendelssohn was Jewish.) No its just I’ve never been a big fan of opera. Of course I do like opera from the baroque period. If you ever get a chance take listen to Jacopo Peri’s ‘Dafne’ assuming you can find it anywhere, or his ‘Euridice’. A fantastic work.
In Wagner’s defense I will say this: Many years ago I had a 33 1/3 record entitled Organ Orgy. IT was Anthony Newmann playing the organ of the Riverside Church in NY and the entire program was Wagner. I have to admit I really like it. Although Lohengrin doesn’t translate to the Organ very well Tannhauser is MIND BLOWING!
Many thanks also to my dear friend Yumbo!

Interesting you mention Opera. I have never cared for it but that’s because I know so little about it. It’s not in Asia and in Australia as a novelty. However I remember an early morning walk to the Martin Place train station in central Sydney and there was this older Italian gentleman just walking singing an opera piece in a rich baritone – the voice and melody floored me. I had no idea.
Maybe one day 🙂
(Incidentally the Sci-Fiction film 2001 : A Space Odyssey by Stanly Kubrick in 1968 featured Bach’s music on harpsichord as a central theme to the Oscar winning movie.)
Yeah, I’m discovering my tastes still. I actually don’t like opera much either. I was brought on to Wagner because I actually share the same last name but my German roots left Germany in the early 1800’s so I bear no direct lineage to Richard Wagner. I also started listening to Wagner simply because it was referenced so strongly in Alien: Covenant. I love those movies.
Its true that Beethoven, Bach, Mozart and the others. Its good music. I listen to Penderecki quite a bit. My ear is actually more trained to Penderecki than anything else. I was trying to be weird and listen to it a lot LOL.
I absolutely love this one album I have entitled:
Prokofiev: Alexander Nevsky,
Yuri Temirkanov & St Petersburg Philharmonic OrchestraIM NOT ACTUALLY LEARNED ON CLASSICAL MUSIC I LISTEN TO TOOL ALOT
That version on Battle of the Ice is not the one I’m used to. My is slower and deeper. This YouTube cut of it is rushed and I don’t like it. The album sounds better and slower

Its even better when married up with Sergei Eisenstein’s Movie. WHAT A CLASSIC.
Sergei Eisenstein’s Movie
Thanks for mentioning that. I was not aware of that director or film and I’m happy to know. I went through a Tarkovsky phase last year and have DVD’s of The Mirror, Stalker and of course Solaris.
