Yesterday, I spent ten hours bushwhacking down this wash with the goal of reaching a large, sandy beach along the shore of the Salt River.

The wash started out shallow and wide that eventually turned into a deep, slot canyon with pools of water that were waist deep with cold, clear, spring runoff.

    Salt River Wilderness

The surprise ending to my efforts was a 30′ sheer cliff that I had no way of climbing down. I knew it was a possiblity because topo maps don’t have the resolution to convey a feature such as this.

But that’s OK. So I climbed back up the canyon a bit, took off my wet clothes and spread them out on the hot rocks to dry while I whipped up some lunch and took a nap to the songs of cactus wrens, flycatchers and my beloved canyon wrens.

I hope that you get to experience the deep contentment and tranquility on your next vacation that I’m experiencing on this one.

    That is all. Hominid out.

Beautiful picture. I’m feeling slightly envious as it snowed here overnight. Enjoy your vacation Hominid!

    Great spot and photo Hominid!

I had a good experience this past week as well. After not having any vacation in over a year, I had the extreme pleasure of relocating my little 27 foot sloop from around the Baltimore Maryland area down to Norfolk, VA. It was the best therapy I could of ever hoped for. It was the perfect mix of challenging wind and wave conditions during the day countered by calm peaceful evenings in shore at nearly empty marinas and anchorages since the boating season will not really start for another month. I could literally feel the stress flow out of body, mind and soul each night as I sat in the c~~~pit of my boat looking at the moon and stars sipping a cold Budweiser and puffing on a Cuban Cohiba cigar. (A rare treat for a boy like me).

Gentlemen…..we all work hard and a lot of what we earn is taken away from us without our permission and given to others. It does not mean that each and everyone of you do not owe it to yourselves to escape the rat race on a regular basis to enjoy the solo rewards of what this planet and mother nature still have to offer us.

That’s exactly the sentiment I was aiming for with this post, though you gave it far more eloquent legs. Happy sailing!
