However, the longer I’m free and see schit like this, the easier it becomes to stay the course.
There is a saying from AA that I heard in passing many moons ago and it went something like, “The longer that I HAVEN’T had a drink makes me that much closer to my NEXT one”.
The rational as it was explained to me is that the longer someone is sober they can become slightly careless with their ant-drinking vigilance just enough where in a moment of “confidence” aka weakness they think that they can get away with JUST ONE DRINK considering how long that “THEY HAVE CONTROLLED IT” etc. etc. etc.
The point is that over time humans have a tendency to forget, rationalize, choose to have a selective memory, etc. etc. etc.
It’s ONLY a date….We’re ONLY going away for a weekend……We’re just going to TRY LIVING TOGETHER…..WOW, SHE TRUKY IS “DIFFERENT”…..etc. etc. etc. Ya get my point….

I had no idea about gas lighting until my most recent ex-GF. I really started questioning what was the truth. She kept spinning stories and distorting the facts. When I disagreed she told me I was confused … even delusional.
She would split hairs over every comment, twist the context and make something out of nothing. The accusations flew at me constantly. She would tell me that all her friends and family agreed with her.
If I got mad or argued with what she said, she claimed that was proof of a guilty conscience.
Thankfully I started recording her and played it for a couple of my friends.
A good buddy I trusted listened to one of her rants and said, “You realize that is crazy, right?”
Another friend started laughing and said, “I’m sorry. I know it’s not funny to you, but that is so ridiculous!”
Finally a co-worker friend explained gas lighting and how this was a classic example.
In retrospect it is easy to see now. But when you are in that situation for years, your head really does get screwed up.
