I have never made bread (as in used flour or dough) in my life. Inspired by Hitmans’ Banana Bread recipe – yesterday I decided to make chipati flat breads cos I like em and I didn’t even have to use the oven.

I bought 2 kg of wholemeal flour (atta) in an asian foods store for less than 5 euro and some ghee (purified butter) for frying them on a pan. (Though I think the correct way may be on a gridle without oil and spread butter on em after.)

    Recipe instructions
    – 2 cups of the flour in a bowl (and sprinkle in a little herbs or garlic if you want)
Add warm water slowly to make a soft dough (like plastercine).
(You can either stir it quickly for a few mins with a spoon or use your clean hands. This the bit I am not used to doing but it was easier than I thought just keep going – add more water or flour as needed to get it right.)

    – Knead the dough for 5 mins or so on a clean surface – Cover and leave for 20 or 30 mins.

    – Preheat a frying pan – Flatten a small ball of the dough, dredge it in flour and roll it out into a thin disk – Sprinkle some flour on the surface so it doesn’t stick to the surface when you roll it.

    – Put it in the frying pan – cook for about 1 minute until it shows bubbles – Turn and cook the other side for less than a minute. (I used a little ghee butter in the frying pan but i dont think you have to use oil or butter in the frying pan you can spread butter on them afterwards)

    – Then get another flattened dough ball and fry the next one – If you have gas you can hold it over the flame to make it puffy.

You can eat them as they are, with soup, put whatever you want on top, or dip them in chilli sauce, guacamole, cottage cheese or whatever you want.

The dough ball can be kept in the fridge for a few days so you can easily flatten a few dough b~~~~ and throw them onto the pan whenever you want. The cooked flatbreads can also be kept in the fridge for a couple of days if you don’t want to eat them straight away, or keep them in the freezer.

Okay it was a simple one to start with but no bother at all and women make such a fuss out of doing a bit of cooking.

That’s great, thanks for the recipe. I like to make my own black bean and lentil burgers. That recipe is a healthy alternative to the white breads in store.
    Thanks Bernie

Starting with flat breads is a great idea, much more forgiving then other breads. Love a nice home made flat bread with my split pea soup in the winter time.

I prefer to make my own breads as well.
Bannock, banana breads, white, whole wheat, flat breads, biscuits, scones, cookies and other treats as well.
I am somewhat suspicious of “bakery” items that can sit on a shelf for a week in store, then either start going moldy within hours of getting them home or survive an additional month on my counter before they start to get moldy.

There was a time in my life when I gave a fuck. Now you have to pay ME for it
