Yeeep, exact same thoughts. 1st and most likely option was to set up on board bomb to make it look more like a failure, and less evidence. Missile is less likely so as to avoid the evidence.

Naw. What possible reason would Iran have to put a bomb on board a plane to make everyone think they shot it down just so they can claim mechanical failure instead? That make no sense. Or, given the timing and the fact that the plane was serviced only a day or so beforehand, a bomb placed by an incompetent Western agent. Given their dismal record when it comes to these things, that would make sense.

Well the admission really, really surprised me! I wasn’t expecting that at all. They had already destroyed physical evidence by bulldozing so I figured that there wasn’t going to be a credible investigation. However, it was reported in the media that it might be possible to detect explosive residue on the corpses. The Iranians probably couldn’t figure out a way to duck that one…

There’s something not quite right about this.

(1) Cruise missiles are not usually launched singly.

(2) It’s coming from the wrong direction.

(3) It would have to pass over hundreds of miles of airspace defended by units already on red alert.

(4) Units which have shown themselves capable of shooting down the smallest drones.

(5) Air defence radar is quite capable of distinguishing between a large airliner and a cruise missile.

(6) There is a very strict chain of command. This is a highly professional force, not some ragtag militia.

(7) The plane had only just taken off and was well within visual range.

I suspect a diplomatic fudge.
