I will trust it is entirely possible to discuss something, without getting triggered, the way some SJW and Progressives do. Yes, this is by Bill Maher, and takes a shot at individuals who have strong positive emotional devotion to civil symbols.
I ran across this by Bill Maher, on fetish nationalism. It goes into the idea about having strong positive emotional reactions to symbols as being absurd.
Feel free to comment. I personally would say developing a strong emotional attachment to national symbols, that insults of them, causing triggering, is a sign of enslavement to something. But then, what do I know?

Anonymous7“Fetish Nationalism” Really?
Many of the men here have served. Some have bled, all have sacrificed. There are a number of SJW sites that you might prefer…….Go on with your bad self. People like me have secured your right to be a bitch. C~~~!

Anonymous7The American flag is a symbol of freedom. I enjoy that freedom on a daily basis.
Attacking my symbol is also an attack on my beliefs.
The problem these days is people dont believe in anything and have lost their morals and self respect.
Hard to respect others when you cant respect yourself.
Don't chase tail. Turn yours around, walk away, and live free!

Likewise.

I only have one civic symbol, the rest are awash in a sea of filthy dirty corruption.
I pledge allegiance to the flag, and only flag, to ever fly on our flagpole.
One nation, torn to shreds, with tyranny and corruption for all…

I have no idea how they react when their flag is used in ways they may find objectionable. I do know the human mind can cause fight or flight responses for those who have a religions attachment to certain symbols. You see on the Internet, for example, Youtubers who get a fanbase that will become an angry mob when who they are a fan of is attacked.

You are acting as if this is a safe space, and individuals with different opinions are a threat to you. I am not an SJW, so I wouldn’t hang out there. I go there, and they would end up calling me a right-winger and should hang out on Breitbart, or whatever. I can have a nuanced response where I can respect some sacrifices, and consider others to be folly. I can see how America can overextend itself at times, and cost the lives of certain men who served, for no reasons. Not all these battles are for freedom or to secure “rights” I may have. America does make mistakes, as does every other nation. I can respect what is good, and discard the rest. I also can do such without mindlessly attaching devotion to certain symbols or whatever else others do.

I don’t hang out here 24 by 7. I have other things to do. I am not sure why you were expecting a rapid response back.

A symbol of freedom is going to produce contradictions in how it is handled. Ultimately, one can do damn well whatever they want with something that is freedom, if the freedom is respected. To not allow this, is to disrespect the freedom it stands for. Now, you have another symbol, like one for truth, or whatever, and if you do whatever you want with it, you undermine it. When freedom is elevated above every other value, then what you speak of happens.
Also, back to the symbol of freedom. For it to really stand for freedom, it can’t universally represent the exact same things. What values it means for you, isn’t the same as it means for other people. What you value isn’t of the same importance. Those who push nationalism, really want uniformity in this, and have a nation’s symbols acted the same way, and demand standing or identical body motions whenever an anthem or whatever is spoken or sung. A nation can value freedom, but nationalism is something different than freedom. Unless freedom is just a buzzword used to trigger an emotional response, then one can’t just go and dictate X behavior for everyone. Well, they can, but then they undermine freedom.
For myself, my own way is my own way. I have no use for others dictating to me what I should or shouldn’t do. If they pick up a tab for me on something, they can dictate, but if they don’t contribute squat, they need to STFU. Anyhow, they can choose not to, but that is my take.

I would say ethnosymbolism relates to this somehow:

I like how all the political strife has made a lot of these roaches come out of their dark corners and just start admitting what they have been subtly pushing for all along. Of course, now Maher and every talk show host/liberal news source is openly making fun of patriotism, nationalism and repeatedly associated racism with the American flag.
You can’t have a country without nationalism. That nationalism doesn’t have to be rooted in racism or any kind of bigotry but it needs to be there. I understand we have many enlightened posters on here who don’t believe in nationalism but I would love to know a better way. Having no country is just serving a foreign empire. It’s great to think we can all be pirates and social anarchist and punk rockers and not have a country or that we could have a country without nationalism, unity and pride in that country but those things simply aren’t true.
As much as I don’t like a lot of things about this country, I don’t choose to attack its flag or anthem. We should work with what we have to make it better. There is a difference between that and actively seeking to destroy it in its totality, simply to replace it with an inferior model we are already seeing work itself out all over Europe.
It is entirely possible to have group cohesion and loyalty to it, without the use of symbols or other things that are meant to trigger an emotional response. Consider MGTOW, for example. How many are attached to the MGTOW label because of the symbol of it?
A deeper issue here, in light of globalization, the internet, etc… what you are seeing is a breakdown of such ties. Natural ties break down, as is natural attachment to to families. Can an artificial construct replace it? Fascism attempts to do this, with a nation and artificial symbols replacing it.
And with this, comes the going one own’s way. While nations can rise and fall, etc… is if of benefit to any man going his own way to be so influenced by nationalism, or any -ism, that they would go off and die in some foreign war to benefit corporations and other rich and elites that aren’t a threat to a local borders? Wars are full of such beating of drums. Of what benefit is it to an individual man to do such? And of what impact would one man have anyhow in such a war?
