A self-proclaimed “fat activist” gave college kids in Minnesota yet another issue to angrily protest: Thin privilege.

To mark “International No Diet Day,” the University of Minnesota’s School of Public Health invited Virgie Tovar, a Cal-Berkeley lecturer and “fat activist,” to instruct America’s future nutritionists, dietitians and social workers on the finer points of “fat oppression.”

Tovar’s talk, entitled “Dispelling Myths: Fat, Fatphobia, and Challenging Social Stereotypes,” was designed to help students understand that “fat phobia” is rampant in a “white, heteronormative society” that is looking to actively oppress people with larger body types. Society’s bias against fat people is, apparently, a form of bigotry and discrimination, evident in everything from sexual preferences to the size of seats on public transportation.

She even, reportedly, compared society’s anti-fat culture to so-called “rape culture,” and chastised society for its obsession with what she termed “thin privilege.”

According to Tovar, the students, who study public health (at one of the top 10 schools for public health), shouldn’t push people they deem overweight to shed pounds, even if it’s better overall for health. “Weight loss is not a realistic goal for most people,” she said, declaring that exercise and diet are “social constructs.” She implored her audience to “lose hate, not weight” and rebel against “diet culture.”

No surprise, Tovar, who lists her occupation as “fat activist,” has a Masters in Human Sexuality—with a focus on the “intersection of body size, race and gender”—and taught at the University of California, at Berkeley, where that is considered an actual academic field of study. Saw this earlier and am not sure if it’s satire or not.

Doesn’t really matter though. As long as men continue to “respect” these viewpoints and believe we are all “equal” then this type of thing will continue.

Also I will posit that women’s refusal to shame landwhales and sluts is the reason most of them are ending up old and single now. Men are going to react by going our own way, it is women’s imperative to keep each other in line so that men don’t walk away. If women refuse to police each other, men lose faith in women as a whole, and the best men assume the worst of all women and slowly everyone follows that lead and all good men walk away.

I just made the mistake of Googling Miss Tovar and promptly lost my dinner. Let’s just say I can see why she is on the fat acceptance bandwagon.

Since 1993 the percentage of obese people in the UK alone has almost doubled from 14 to 25%, this is not a social construct, this is the reality of a population in the main too stupid to face reality, too lazy to either eat properly or get off their asses for an hour a day and do some kind of exercise, but still able to smash up the tools of their “oppression” (a set of scales) because it made them feel better about themselves.

“Fat acceptance” isn’t striving to gain acceptance it’s attempting to make “fat adoration” so that they can get with the people they’re attracted to (normally more stereotypically attractive people, or people better off etc). For a woman not being attracted to a fat guy is having standards, but for a guy that isn’t attracted to a fat woman it’s body shaming. Preaching about treating everyone equally but not living that way, or at least being honest about your own hypocrisies is bulls~~~. Fat acceptance should be fat people accepting that most people don’t find fat attractive. I’m a fatass and well aware that believing the problem is society and not my lazy ass would be a complete delusion.
