Hey Fellas,
I want to lose some weight. I’m targeting 35 lbs. I think I’m going to try intermittent fasting.
I’m going to experiment with the lengths and frequency but think I’m going to start with 2x 24 hr days per week, and possibly try longer periods as I get used to it. Problem is I get h-angry and I have a lot of direct reports and customers, so I have to be a bit careful not to lose it on anyone. 🙂
On fast days I’m only going to have water & black coffee.
I may experiment with cardio on fasting days but not for a while.
I’ve created an exercise regime, and am making some dietary adjustments to keep it off.
Thinking back to my divorce, I didn’t eat much over the first few weeks and I lost a lot of weight, quickly. Cardio just doesn’t do it for me. Cardio + heavy weights does.
Has anyone experimented with fasting? I’d love to hear more about your experience and ideas.
Thanks.
Not too sure if drinking only water and black coffee is a good thing your your body, imo. Have you thought about eating small amounts of food but more regularly, like small snacks? This is a more sustainable approach and may create a good balance. Your energy levels will be more stable rather than running on an “empty” stomach. Healthy snacks like carrot and a small amount of cheese, or small salad boxes with small pieces of grilled chicken, box of nuts assortment etc.
A tranquil mind is neither happy nor sad, it is uninfluenced by external conditions.
I think any fasting programs I’ve ever heard of have you eating around 500 calories on the fasting day. Think soup broth a few times a day.
That said, good luck. I don’t know anyone who has done it, but I think it’s called the 5:2 diet or the 2:5 diet.
Order the good wine
Fast weight loss can’t be good for you but sometimes it has to be done. I’ve had to do it a few times and just stuck with a rice and water diet for a few weeks. Be careful and good luck…
I got free access to a nutritionist.
I been losing on a no grains no sugars diet. It’s a real slow loss, but I dropped about 15 pounds in 3 months and still losing. I noticed my joints are working better too. My nutritionist explained it as inflammation going away that was caused by the grains. I got started with this video that was recommended. If you rescue a damsel in distress, all you will get is a distressed damsel.
It is not. Cut carbs.
Protein and fat must be most of your diet.
Salad for diner. Don’t eat after 9 pmBreakfast must be your biggest meal.
I eat a steak for breakfast (no joke)
Have something less heavy midday and salad for dinner.
Drop some fruits between foods.
Water 3 liters per day.
And run 5-10 km or walk fast 15 kmMy weight 80 kg height 1,82 meters
Do some boxing also.
To those following me, be careful, I just farted. Men those beans are killers.
The problem with fasting is that you will put your body into ‘starvation mode’. And while yes sure you can drop weight doing this, your body will be an asshole and slow your metabolism down to compensate so when you do start on a regular diet again, you’ll pack on pounds unless you keep to a restricted caloric intake. And once the body has decided it’s recovered enough which is usually the weight you started your diet at plus a few extra pounds for good measure, your metabolism will speed up sum but it won’t go back to where it was it’ll remain slower.
So I mean you’re a big boy do what you want. Just know what the potential side effects are going to be on the other side.
The proper way to loose weight is to calculate your caloric needs, then reduce that by about 500 calories a day. Then spend time doing cardio to burn calories off and strength straining to increase muscle mass. Bigger muscles burn more energy at rest and during activity they’re a built in metabolic booster of sorts.
And look at your diet. Your body will burn it’s carbs first, then fats, then protein (muscle) for fuel. So if you keep your carbs to a minimum and eat a high protein diet, you can get to burning fat faster. This isn’t great if you want to do endurance activities like marathons, ironmans and things like that, but if you’re just an average joe looking to drop weight, this is where you want to be.
Brother,
Your main goal is to burn more than you eat. I personally stick to a single meal a day and it suits me well! Don’t fast too long, metabolism will catch up…
Also, try drinking more water – it helps fill the “pit” in your gut and keeps your brain satisfied.
I’m young (early 20s) so diet changes can be done well and metabolism adjusted within a few days, but it may take longer for a older, stubborn mind to catch up! 🙂
Best of luck!

I am no expert but I can say what worked for me: a one month Isagenix program (google it) of healthy shakes morning/ night and any lunch I wanted (within reason). I dropped 6 kilos very naturally and easily in the month from 81 to 75. That was 2 years ago and I never looked back. Still 75kg and a trim 44 years old. Note: I maintained healthy eating since. Minimal late night pizza mate!!!
It worked easily for me with no exercise. My good friend who put me on to it lost 20kg+ in 3-4 months.
It cost me a few hundred but for me it was the best $ I ever spent. I am sure there are cheaper ways but I found myself unable to muster the discipline until I tried it. I am like a new man. Best of luck bro.
Geesus…. fasting for weight loss?
That sounds like a *really* bad idea. Weight loss only works if you make lifestyle changes that are sustainable long term.
For me – I shed 20kg by running. I dint change any diet at all – I just run average of 50-80km a week depending on where I am on a training cycle. Mostly this is done with a bunch of friends at a comfortable jogging pace having a laugh and a joke in the morning as the sun rises.
The other HUGE change that will effect weight would be sugar intake. If you stop eating processed junk (all stuffed with sugar) – and only eat stuff that you’ve cooked from basic fresh ingredients, then you’ll feel better, be healthier physically, your mental alertness will likely pick up a gear AND…. you’ll shed a few kg’s.
Fasting isn’t good. When there’s a lack of food, your body goes into hibernation mode. When it does this, any energy your consume gets stored as fat. Which is also what your body does with excess sugar (your body’s primary fuel for energy). When you eat in portions, eat the right food, and eat all day, your keep your metabolism working. Your brain tells your body “don’t store this. There’s plenty more where that’s coming from”. So your metabolism works to burn through it and process it.
When you consume too much sugar however, your body says “hey man, we have an excess. Put this away for later. We may need it” Sugar is the easiest thing to transform into fat. Eat lots of protein, reduce your carbs, and reduce your sugar. Eat often, and eat in portions. Portions are America’s worst enemy. Eat out and you’re given 2-3 portions in a meal.
But when you starve yourself your brain tells your body there’s no food at all, and so you shouldn’t burn it, you need it. So store it away. Fat is the last thing your body will burn in starvation mode. It will destroy your muscles, shut down your organs, and all kinds of stuff. This happens all the time when people go mountain climbing and get stranded or get buried in avalanches, etc.. Their body keeps the fat, but consumes everything else, even to the point of organ failure.
Do what works for you. I read the posts above and several men have different types of programs that have worked for them. No guarantee they will work for you.
For me what has been working (I am 54 and have about 8 lbs extra in the waist) has been intermittent fasting. I go 16-18 hours between meals. So after eating at night I will wait until 16-18 hours to eat my next meal.
I have also experimented by including high intensity exercise, including cardio, which seems to help a bit. Slowly I have noticing my pants seem to be fitting better in the waist area.
Since you mentioned you have to be careful due to work related issues, take it slow and figure it out. Good luck!

I fasted during Easter, last April. I have to say that within a week, I lost around 2 kilos (that’s ~4.4 lbs). No meat, no junk food, no dairy products and no candy, (also no coffee).
I won’t suggest you to drink only water and coffee, you shouldn’t starve to death. I used to eat things like vegetables, salads without dressings, or boiled potatoes with vinegar and olive oil. And if I wanted something sweet I’d grab some sesame bar or halva.
Believe it or not that actually worked.
Hey BackinBlack,
Thanks, your response/experience is what I was hoping for. I’m going to experiment with something very similar, 5:2 to start then perhaps 4:3. I started yesterday and it really wasn’t too bad.
I’m going to try it for 1-3 months, experimenting with the frequency to see the results before implementing more formal lifestyle changes.
I’ll try to post back about my experience (good and bad).
Hey Guys,
Thanks so much for taking the time to respond. I love the support on this site.
I’ve been reading articles on fasting, here are two of the better articles which debunk some myths, explain the science, etc.
Life’s about new experiences and I’m determined to try this (started yesterday) and will happily share my experience (good and bad) in a month or two.
There are some great youtube videos on this topic. Search for “ketosis”.

You might want to check out lean gains, or kinobody.
They debunk most of the myths about starvation mode etc.
That is for fast of more than 72 hours etc.
Intermittent fasting is 16-20 hours and it WORKS.I have been doing it for 6 weeks now. 53, 6-1 and started at 217.
I also workout a lot, but it wasn’t getting the job done anymore. I felt I needed to drop 20 pounds.I have lost 18 pounds so far (199 this morning), and though the first few days were hard, it is now EASY. In fact today was hiit and strength training day, and I literally had to force myself to eat. I fasted 20 hours from 4pm yesterday, did my workout and then had a protein green smoothie at noon. 3 hours later had lunch of hashbrowns and beans, and had to force myself to eat a bowl of pea and bean soup for dinner.
I drink black coffee in the morning, 2 hours after waking, and then workout. It makes things so easy, though at some point I will have to figure out a way to adjust it to do some bulking.
I am also sleeping better, and feeling better. It does look like I have added some muscle, or maybe it is just the definition coming in.I feel I still need to drop down to about 180 to get around 10% body fat, and then do some bulking.
If you do it, keep us posted. good luck.
Oh, I see by your follow-ups you started the 5:2.
The thing about that is, I think once you start it is easier to just stick with it. I think going off it for 2 days is just resetting things where it is harder to do, and judging by the comments on Kinobody’s videos I don’t think I am an anomaly in that thinking. But good luck man. Seriously, keep me/us updated.
