I think this is exactly right. Marriage “worked” in the past because there were real consequences to infidelity. I’m not saying it was a good deal, but in many older societies women were not allowed to initiate divorces, and in the event of a divorce, men got to keep their own property AND the children. Women had every incentive to remain faithful.

Take away the incentive, and it’s just not happening. Water flows downhill.

There was a time in the past when women were abhorring the idea of being unfaithful for a man but do you know when and why it was happening ?
It was happening in the times when women had no useless rights , in the times when they were physically disciplined by their parents , they were physically disciplined by their husbands whenever they were showing a slight sign of ill behavior and misconduct
They were also not allowed to mingle with other men and barge into men’s business and know their place in society , at home , everywhere
Girls in those days would rather end their lives if they were even seen nude by a man , they had the Virgin mindset instilled into their blood all well and they were the first to hate another woman that was acting like the fabled whore

If you would read into past rules and regulations for women you would find if you dig enough that physical discipline for young maidens and women in general was a normal , sane requirement and practice , as well dictated by the church . Those rules still exist but who follows them anymore
Aside from this , there was the fact that women could be lynched in the streets by angry mobs if she was found to be unfaithful to her husband , burned at stake like the witches , and the man was bearing a shame on himself and on his family for an unfaithful wife that was compelling him to save the family name honor and his without question not like nowadays when he has to shut up and take all the shame , ridicule silently and not act upon it
These were the times when marriage was truly a marriage and the wife was truly the woman she was made to be

Nowadays women have nothing to fear and have no incentive to be faithful to a man

Only a society revival like that with strict rules and doctrine would re-make women into women
