Today I bought a new pressure washer . The guy at hardware store was helping me load it into back of pick-up truck. He was wearing the vest showing that you ask him for assistance when in store. He was in his mid to late twenties.

… as I was preparing to leave, he said to me .. quote “you bought a good one” .. I said, yes, it seems to be a good model .. he said quote “this better one is really nice, it doesn’t need oil”

.. I said, you’re kidding, aren’t you? that’s impossible .. “nope” then he left and walked away

he went back in store and I thought for a minute and couldn’t quite figure out what he said. I looked at the pressure washer and it had a yellow sticker on the motor hooked to oil filler cap that said in big black lettering “NO OIL”

In the box that came with the unit it had a pint of SAE 30 motor oil on the top of the packing .. and on the front page of owner’s manual it said in big black letters .. must ADD OIL before first use.

.. that young guy who gives advice at store thought the NO OIL sticker meant .. needs no oil. What it REALLY MEANT was that no oil was currently in engine .. and it needed oil before first use or it would be quickly destroyed. A world of experts.

To be fair, to simply state “No Oil” can be taken a few different ways. Though, in this case the manufacturers of the item are at fault for being too cheap to add the two words on the tag to say, “No Oil In Engine.”

    No Oil In Engine

… I was thinking that same thing .. parts of the owner’s manual seemed to be written by someone “I’m guessing likely in China” who translated in a unique way. I could tell by the way they worded things, and how they assembled phrases, all through the instructions.
.. and the design of that yellow “No Oil” sticker without additional wording that should have been there .. seemed to be written in that same basic style.

Sounds like a variation of the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, in which a factory worker threw a cigarette butt into a fuel barrel marked “empty,” knowing full well there were explosive fuel vapors around, causing a major explosion. But the barrel itself was labeled “EMPTY,” so his lower/lizard/reflexive brain took over and he didn’t think twice. I’ll bet he felt like an idiot that day. The theory examines the ambiguity of language and how it affects people to do and say things against their better judgment. Although in this case I’m guessing the twentysomething guy’s knowledge was rudimentary, he was aware that power washers in general need oil…

At least he didn’t tell you to turn off the 710. Because of the “710 ON” sticker.

Yeah, experts… Was it a general hardware store or a specialized place ?

Let’s see…..REGARDLESS of what a tag may say, anyone that either operates and/or works around power equipment should QUESTION the idea of a gasoline engine that doesn’t need oil, but then again Common Sense isn’t all that Common…..Being in his 20’s and selling power equipment, he really shouldn’t need this pointed out LOL LOL LOL LOL

I have an air compressor with a nice, old cast iron pump (American made) on it. There’s a sticker near the oil drain plug that reads, “Add oil to bottom thread”. I confirmed with the manufacturer that this means to add oil until it reaches the bottom thread of the FILL hole — not the bottom of the DRAIN hole’s bore… but the meaning of the sticker could be misinterpreted because of its proximity to the drain.

There’s a certain hardware store in town (one that bills itself as having the “helpful hardware folks”). Well, almost every time I’ve asked the “helpful” folks for assistance, they’ve been less-than-helpful. One time, I needed a belt for my lawnmower. I had the old one with me. I figured they could measure it and find me a replacement from a catalog… nope. The guy went to his computer, brought up the same website I could have loaded on my phone, typed “belts”, and asked me to scroll through and pick the right one. Not so helpful. Another time, I called and asked the guy to go to the hardware drawers and check their stock on threaded inserts, to save me a trip if they didn’t have enough. You’d have thought I asked him to find me proof of alien life or something.

Now the worrisome part is if someone along the shipping chain decided to still test the pressure washer without oil before it reached the store where you bought it from.

I sincerely hope you have a good warranty on the product you bought.

    OMFG.

It can happen to any 5 year old.

I noticed the “Oil” level was low in my moms E-20 toyota Corolla. So.. Thanks to Motorweek, In some place called “Owings Mills Maryland” (I thought it was in the U.K. for some reason) I must of got the idea to top up the oil for my mom. But you see, the radiator and the Oil cap look very similar, to a 5 year old.

filled the oil to the top! I even checked the Air filter to make sure it was clean. Did not look like any “oil” goes in there.

I don’t remember if I told my parents about it at the time. OR.. my mom found out later.. But I do remember the mechanic being very amused. For all of the things I did as a kid, I don’t remember getting in trouble for this one.

I DO fondly remember my mom brought home her College textbook: “Auto repair for Dummies.”

This just proves anyone can make a mistake with oil.

My Dad’s mistake was leaving 2-3 year old me in the front seat of a Ford Galaxie 500 on a hill. You know, I still enjoy driving backwards Even to this very day. I don’t remember doing it. But.. My mom never could tell me that story without her face lighting up.

I can kind of understand why My folks might of fought so much back then. If I got home and noticed my Chainsaw was used to dig a straight hole in the driveway, (I might have been 5 at the time). I can understand my dads frustration with my mother now.

Its important that you put the oil in the right hole. See, if you MIX where you put bar oil? I think that ruins your chainsaw. , you might just fill both sides with Pre Mixed fuel. Maybe even straight gasoline. if we adjusted for inflation for $200 that will be about $700 today.

      My dad was pretty cool.

You are all alone. If you have been falsely accused of RAPE, DV, PLEASE let all men know about the people who did this. http://register-her.net/web/guest/home

It’s pretty bad all over, I’d say. I was buying a new toilet at a Home Depot and the guy “helping” me actually said, “I have this one in my house and it flushes great even though I have very low water pressure.” I wish I could’ve shut off his supply line and amazed him by showing him how the toilet will still flush even with no water pressure at all.

This has nothing to do with experts, but people in general. I had someone else tell me that because of their low water pressure, their dishwasher doesn’t get the dishes clean, even after I explained to them that the dishwasher has it’s own pump and shuts the valve off to the water supply once the reservoir is filled.

Yet another guy thought he had to leave his TV on so the VCR could later record a program. I told him that once the recording time was set, you could remove the TV from the room and his program would still be recorded. I even explained to him that the signal reaches the VCR first then goes through to the TV. His look of confusion and complete lack of understanding was frustrating for me.

I’m no rocket scientist or brain surgeon. These are very common sense things……..like, any and all engines require oil for lubricant. Even air cooled engines that do not require liquid coolant, still need oil.

I am amazed by people’s responses to this simple question: “Why does the moon go through phases……..why sometimes does it appear to be full while other times it appears as half, or a crescent?” I’ve even asked people who appear to be pretty smart and they all say the same thing: “It’s the Earth’s shadow.” ………????????………..?????????………. So even when you see the moon and the sun in the sky at the same time and you see a half moon, it’s the Earth’s shadow? So every month, several times a month, their is a lunar eclipse?….????…….even though, when there is going to be an actual lunar eclipse, they announce it?…..and they don’t do that every month…..????….. Again, not rocket science. The moon has night and day just like the Earth has night and day. It gets dark because the sun can only shine on one side of the planet, or moon. When it gets dark every night, it’s not a damn solar eclipse.

Yeah, knowing why the moon phases isn’t something we need to know, but still, like all the rest of this stuff, it’s just plain common sense. When the x and I moved into our new home, the main bedroom had two doors but only one light switch. I wanted to put in two 3-way switches, so you could turn the light on or off at either door, like it should be. While running the wire up in the attic, I asked the x to wait by the hole I had cut in the wall and pull a good amount of the wire through the hole. She said, “but I don’t know what the end of the wire will look like.” I actually had to tell her, “When you see something moving in the hole, that will be the wire.”

Yes, I’m ignorant about a lot of things. There are many things in this world I know nothing about, but I have some common sense and it is so irritating when dealing with people who seem to have no common sense at all.

The evil in women’s hearts leaves them no moral bounds as to inhibit them from descending to the lowest levels of darkness to acquire their self entitled desires.

I have a really dumb cat. I mean he is really f~~~ing stupid, no sense at all. Constantly does stupid s~~~. Example, pushed his way outside one day, refused to come back in even though it was cold and raining. While later heard him at the door making pitiful sounds. Another escape he walked up to a fox like “hi there” and got bitten.

But I will say he LEARNS. He doesn’t usually do the SAME stupid s~~~ again. He even HEARS a fox doing that bark/scream thing and he gets worried, looks around the room like he is looking for hiding spots.

I’ve seen more than a few people that are dumber than my cat. Now that the Internet exists, most ignorance is willful ignorance. You can literally learn almost ANYTHING now, from Type-III secretion systems in bacteria to M-theory.

All my life I've had doubts about who I am, where I belonged. Now I'm like the arrow that springs from the bow. No hesitation, no doubts. The path is clear. And what are you? Alive. People have the internet in front of their face all day and yet most don’t use it for information and learning.

    Oh well, takes all kinds.

As I say now, people are so stupid, they don’t even know the sky is supposed to blue blue, not white or gray.

There hasn’t been a clear deep rich blue sky without a man-made cirrus cloud or light blue haze for 24 hours now (or even three hours) for several years now, since the government started completely controlling the weather with chemtrails. The government now admits they are controlling the weather, and people still don’t believe it. You can’t fix stupid.
