I think what’s most enlightening about it to me is……….these women don’t even have the decency to be ashamed.

I don’t know why anyone sane would willingly mutilate their genitals or their children’s genitals. However this case fascinates me as it seems to encapsulate much of the blindness and sickness in our culture.

A woman seeks at great expense to extend her youthful looks by the use of a product that is highly dubious ethically. However her looks are what is paramount to her and so she will spend on them. She is not thinking about the things a wise woman should be thinking of as she ages, she wants instead to be a girl again.

A medical profession makes money through selling people an unethical procedure that does nothing for health and then through pandering to vain women by re-selling a byproduct of it for more profit. Medicine starts to look less like curing the sick and more like milking people for cash.

There is clearly a great disparity between how western boys and viewed and how African girls are viewed and this is accepted without even being noticed by society. A western boy should be circumcised without his consent because he would be “dirty” otherwise. An African girl should be denied traditional initiation (usually done with consent) because she must be protected.
