Ebola – Clean, sanitary developed cities will likely emerge relatively unscathed from the coming Ebola pandemic but developing countries will be ravaged. It is possible to predict the likely outcome of any particular city by simply watching the news and noting the rate of increase from month to month in nearby slums.
This new plague is going to teach Mankind a lesson about community. In the typical Earth city slums are allowed to coexist nearby because slums provide workers for the affluent. This arrangement is going to be abandoned together with the people in those slums. Biologically, everyone is at risk to their neighbor’s fate. Allowing slum dwellers to move in and out of the affluent community, will cause the affluent to share their fate. The future of slums is that they will be “contained.”
Slums with open sewers and lacking clean water, sanitation, and medical care will have higher transmission rates with more than one new infection per current victim as opposed to less than one (subcritical chain reaction). Once the transmission rate exceeds one new infection for each dying victim the infection rate will increase exponentially.
Understanding and predicting if Ebola will become pandemic in a particular city involves three concepts; 1)transmissibility, 2)susceptibility and 3)suppression.
1)Transmissibility usually involves how virulent the disease is and how closely packed are the potential victims. Does the disease produce copious infective fluids, spray mists etc. Are people squeezed together sharing community water, toilet, ventilation, transport, door knobs etc.
2)Susceptibility, what is the percentage of people that if exposed will contract the disease. At the beginning of an epidemic everyone is susceptible. Near the end stages many people are immune. If the transmissibility is 1.1 new people exposed per infected and the remaining susceptible is only 80 percent then the epidemic will halt.
3) Finally, suppression reduces the transmission exposure rate. Clean water supply, underground sewage systems, well spaced homes etc.
Mathematically
Rate of increase = (Transmissibility) (susceptibility) (suppression)Watch Lagos Nigeria 21 million with 2/3s in slums. If number of new cases doubles each month….
The most likely vector into the affluent community will be child day care.
Be safe wonko.Where are you located, Wonko? If you don’t mind saying.
wonko’s point is that Diarrhea, Cholera, Dysentery, Hepatitis A are all Water-borne diseases prevalent in poor communities with above ground sewage runoff as opposed to below ground pipes. Similarly Scabies, Tuberculosis, Typhoid etc. are diseases of cramped living quarters i.e. sharing a single bed. These disease are for the most part treatable with modern medicine although antibiotics are loosing their effectiveness somewhat. Eventually Ebola will add to this tragic brew and wonko expects that because of the person to person communicability together with high mortality/morbidity that affluent communities will segregate more.
People WILL protect their kids. So reports of Ebola in the news will result in people becoming more selective about domestic help living conditions and removing their kids from child daycare. Single moms rely upon these services to enable their “independent” way of life. Therefore an increased percentage of single mom’s will decide that independence is no longer worth the hassle. So WATCHOUT fellas, these single moms will be coming after you. Wonko lives in the woods but it doesn’t matter, wonko is to old to be of interest. But if you are a young man, or even not so old man you are prime, grade a husband material.
Be careful fellas
wonkoThis reminds me of basic training, everyone was sick as hell for the first couple weeks. They crammed people from all over the country into one room and we all caught whatever everyone else had.
Wonko: in the 80’s governments around the world did that same thing they are doing now with ebola: They released AIDS. When I was kid, it was AYDS and it was a f~~~ing diet candy.
Rainydaykid: Yup and no f~~~s were given about you during basic.
Lol, it was related to the post, he was mentioning it about the conditions. Governments didn’t release AIDS, not sure where the hell you got that idea, that goes in the conspiracy section along with “faked” moon landings and 9/11 didn’t happen.
