Anonymous42Yes I remember, flash meant duck and cover on the spot and the air raid system meant move to the interior and basement for maximum protection, every Friday 12:00 noon thousands of sirens throughout the valley would blare for one minute.
Air raid sirens at any other time meant your ass!
Before my time, but the more I think about it is that “duck and cover” was bulls~~~ when is comes to a nuclear blast.
From videos of nuclear weapons, a nuclear blast comes in waves.
The first wave is EMP.
The next is a the bright radiation wave, which brings on a temperatures as hot as the surface of the sun.
The kinetic wave hits and blast everything out, then inward.
Duck and cover means you will become like a cooked husk like the remains found at Pompeii.

Yeah, I think Duck and Cover was meant to instill a sense of fear and impending doom into the Children. When they grew up they would always vote for further expansion of “National Security.”

I grew up 5 miles from a primary target. They told us it would be over before it started so just go outside and watch. No s~~~! We never practiced the hide under the desk thing….
Just rolling down the road

I absolutely do! Duck, cover and kiss your ass goodbye. The fear programming also carried over into tornado season despite being in a “tornado proof” school.
I don’t remember ‘duck and cover’
I do remember bellbottom jeans that dragged on the ground, the deck shoe fad, when four function calculators cost about one hundred dollars, when we used slide rules in chemistry class, when record player turn tables had four speeds, when we had 16mm movies shown in school assembly, when my neighbors raked their lawns and burned the leaves along the road in long piles. I remember when a brand sparkling new Texas Yellow VW Beetle 111 cost $2,495 including sisal floormats .. I remember Disco and when it left, when kids burned incense and cinnamon candles in their dorm rooms and the whole place smelled like ‘sandalwood’ .. I remember seeing streakers .. and when pinball machines in the game room behind the barber shop cost ten cents or three plays for a quarter, soda machines dispensed glass bottles .. when the old root beer stand on the end of town made delicious greasy fries and the entire place was lit up with yellow lightbulbs in a futile effort to control the flies. I remember when juke boxes played 45 rpm records, I actually remember putting in a dime to play ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight’ .. I don’t remember Woodstock or the Beatles .. but, I wish I did .. I wish I could have. My timing was just a little too late.

Absolutely so. As a child growing up in Germany in the mid 60’s, and while in the Army. Duck and Cover was almost as important as Shoot, Move and Communicate at that time.

Anonymous42F~~~ . That song is stuck in my head after seeing the title .
I remember the movie “the day after” . It was played a couple of times over in high school .
This is the whole movie . Go to 55:00 its where it gets good
THE PLANTATION HAS NOW TURNED INTO THE KILLING FIELDS . WOMAN ARE NOW ROLLING CAMBODIAN STYLE .
I do, back in the late 70’s. But it was for earthquakes, in So cal territory, if I remember correctly.
Philosophy, the female repellent

Bingo.
Those of you who are into Cold War history or the history of atomic weapons may find this movie interesting:

(I’ve watched it several times on VHS, but I’ve never seen the DVD/Blu-Ray versions, so I can’t comment on the nature of the updated footage on those).
I have the DVD, and the 3D is okay. You get to wear the funny red & blue paper glasses.
I watch it a couple times a year. It is definately one to add to your collection.

It is definately one to add to your collection.
We will have to pick out our respective top three most unusual DVD titles to share on day!

Anonymous12We never did it but I grew up in the 80’s. For us the early 80’s was about nuclear war and possibly the human race ending due to AIDS. Sounds funny now but they were genuine causes for concern. At least we were kids. I always think back to that fear now when they start preaching climate change and whatever new types of fear they try and push.
Duck and cover? F~~~ that, crack a beer and watch!!!
Get a vasectomy.
