    Hello Hello

I was reading some very interesting book about animal adaptations to cold climates
As some of you know larval stages of some insects can resist down to 3 Kelvin (0 is absolute 0..nothing moves at all – space temperature)
Also some frogs get into supercooling and manage -10 Celsius for example
Others freeze end to end and they are functionaly dead – but they are alive an well when it gets warm
Anway it is very easy to think about conserving our bodies like that. ice crystals can cut celles in the human body (the above stated animals go around this problem ) so de-freezing will get a dead meat suit – that is for now
But lets think about 50 years from now in a period when this problem is solved. Lets say you will freeze yourself for 1.000.000 years. So from a techical point of view you will be dead right? So where is your soul ? still in your body? when you will be warmed again this soul will “download” from the Big Unknown?
Or your soul will just resume at power-up of the brain cells?
What will you remember? – most likely 0…bc your brain cells are dead
    Or you will remember something?
I know it is rather shady what i ask but this questions managed to pop into my mind after reding that book. Also everthing is pure speculation bc we cant argument anything with solid data
But just for the sake of our imagination

Where does the soul go when undergoing surgery and anesthesia?

I realize that there is a difference between a complete stop in cellular activity and a chemically induced state of unconsciousness, but if the soul is not receiving any input while under sedation what happens when the body is frozen?

I don’t believe life can return from death (Jesus not withstanding), but if you were to successfully freeze and thaw a person it would be just like awakening from sleep. When does the spirit exit the body? I don’t know but I know I’m gonna find out!!! And so are you!

I remember watching a science show about planetary exploration/population beyond our solar system.
There would be no one aboard because no one would live long enough to make the trip, let alone have enough food/water.
Instead, copies of DNA and brain data waves/memories/consciousness would be the “passengers” on board the space craft.
When arriving (100s of years later), the DNA would be used to create clones, and the brain data uploaded into them.

First, there is no “soul” and consciousness is merely an emergent property arising from the interaction of the cognitive and physical processes of the brain.

Putting it another way, we’re conscious (that is, self aware) because we believe ourselves to be so. However, the vast majority of what we do occurs “below’ the level of consciousness not matter what we want to think.

Second, being “dead” and “death” exist in a gray zone. There is no hard and fast definition. What was viewed “death” just 10 years ago, let alone 100 years ago, isn’t quite what is viewed as “death” today. There are legal definitions, but they lag behind medical science.

As for the rest of your freshman-level philosophical gobbledeegook, the ‘answers” you want are wholly determined by the parameters you set. Change the parameters and the answers change. Let’s look at temperature for example. If you assume low temperature hibernation akin to the frogs you mention, there will be no loss of memory. The dainty quantum electrical dance occurring the brain’s neurons has merely been slowed not disrupted or ceased.

However if you assume a flash “freezing” to a single digit Kelvin state, the quantum electrical dance I mentioned in the first example is irreversibly disrupted because the atoms making up your neurons are now part of a fermionic condensate and thus not the everyday matter you assume. After “cooling” to that point, you’re not going to be able to “unscramble the egg”. That is the matter making up the body you “froze” will undergo such elemental changes that is won’t in anyway resemble a body when you “thaw” it back out. In fact, there’s a damn good chance that the elements the body consisted of will separate from each other in the “thawing” process.

In the end, the question of whether you’re “dead” or not or whether you’re the “same” person or not will depend more on legal opinions than scientific or philosophical ones. Let me suggest a few Known Space short stories by the science-fiction author Larry Niven which examine these issues; specifically the story entitled The Defenseless Dead.

The ideas behind the story are twofold. First, medical advances have made organ transplants easy and foolproof. Second, if you can keep replacing failing organs with newer ones, you won’t die. This leads Niven’s future society to create “organ banks” much like blood banks today and, unlike today, those banks are filled with the various bits and pieces of condemned criminals. Because everyone wants to live forever and a supply of organs is the only way to achieve that, Niven’s society imposes the death penalty for crimes like jaywalking or false advertising. Not surprisingly, the death penalty acts a deterrent and the organ banks are running low. Another source of supply may be available: terminally ill people who had froze themselves centuries earlier hoping the future would hold a cure. The question now is whether or not those people can be declared dead so they can be disassembled for their parts.

    Happy reading!

There are those who have been clinically dead and lived to tell about it.

If somebody lived, they never died.
Dead is dead, no coming back.

You can't reason with unreasonable, there; women, figured out, there is nothing to reason.
