I know this sounds a little conspiratorial, but I’ve heard about the possibility of Facebook/Google listening into you. I didn’t think much of it (heck, a lot of sites dispute these claims).
I rented “Exodus: Gods and Kings” from the Redbox, and mind you, I’ve NEVER mentioned anything of it on Facebook before. I only had the DVD menu playing in the background as I was researching various stuff. Thought the soundtrack sounded cool so far, though I hadn’t even started it!
Anyway, I made a brief Facebook comment on a news article (I’m rarely on it, but I’ll say things every once and a while), and afterward it had a list of “recommended” pages to like…one of which was a fan page for “Exodus: Gods and Kings!”

This has happened before, when friends of mine and I were talking about Tropical Storm Allison, and I decided to look it up. All I typed in was “tr” and Google suggested “Tropical Storm Allison” in that auto-fill box thing…
This can’t be a coincidence…can it?
Google does track your searches, and makes suggestions. Also remember the more people search a topic, the more likely it will come up on auto-complete…I think at least.
Stay AWAY from these places. They suck the light from your soul ☺
If they can it’d be great if this site could. An alarm of sorts to recognize female vocal patterns (high, whiney, ending in questions, prolonged silence, same questions etc.). Great topic though, always assumed the camera was hot, hadn’t considered the mic. If “Oh all these credit card bills are so unfair” causes a tampon ad pop up, IMO it’s a clincher.

Yes, they log everything you do and sell it to merchants and anyone else willing to pay. But wait, there’s more! They cheerfully turn it over to the govt:

But don’t worry; it’s all for our own good.

Anonymous12I know GMail tracks emails or something similar as I was exchanging emails with a friend a while ago and started to notice that the ads they were showing were all related to our discussion topics.
Thanks for the warning guys. Google is a c~~~, what can I say.

In google’s terms of service they tell you that anything of theirs you use gives them full access to anything you put on it to use in any fashion they wish.

Now, looking up and even typing in information and having Google/Facebook recommend it to you is understandable. It’s the fact that I’ve never looked up anything close to either Exodus OR Tropical Storm Allison, and it was able to predict what I wanted to look up immediately.
NO, it’s not a conspiracy, A while back when I was in the military around 2008 i made a facebook page and logged into it once, NEVER USED IT. about a month ago my friends and I made an affiliation site/store, (playing around), so we made a facebook page to plug the website (google adwords PPC, and paid $5 bucks to advertise our .com with a facebook page, since the domain and affiliation store (ref links) are in my name, I made a page. Diff PC, 3,000 miles away in a diff state, diff internet, yadda, yadda. I have a very basic name, might as well be a john doe. This is where things got weird (BTW, the page has nothing to do with…me) It came up with friend suggestions; EVERYONE I served in the military with…no s~~~! and old roommates when I got out. the hairs on the back of my head stood up; like how the f~~~!? so I googled it, many others claim this “phenomenon” as well, even ppl that just made one had friend suggestions they met 10yrs ago in a different country on vacation. “well, those ppl looked you up” HOW? there’s a million john doe’s…how did it come up with ppl I ran into; it’s not even a personal account! F~~~ that, no way. Evil technology floating around.

MrDextro – That sounds about right! Facebook was finding friends that know my best friend from high school ROTC 10 years ago! I KIND OF knew them, as I was friends with some of the ROTC people, but we were never close. When my best friend and I have talked about them in PERSON (or any school people for that matter), they ended up on the “suggested friends” feed…despite us NEVER typing in their name. Just SAYING things out of mouth seem to activate something. I know I’m not crazy when it comes to this.

Anonymous18Just to add to that – Gmail will suggest ads based on what you have in your inbox.
Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

Only if you use their web based client. Use a POP or IMAP client and Google can’t do that.
And while you’re at it, use a client with encryption and encourage your friends to do the same. Because you can.
my oh my do i love adblock! 😀
