Even before I decided to go into computers for my career, I’ve always been interested in machines. Mainly, computers. Ever since I got my first laptop, I was known as the “IT guy” of my family.

Since I’m still living with my parents for the next few months, I don’t complain about it to them at all, because I just see it as me paying them a form of rent to them whenever I help with IT s~~~.

Most days, I actually have no problem with helping my family out with computer related issues. But, especially with Microsoft forcing Windows 10 on people’s computers, it makes things that much harder to keep trying to tell them that it’s on Microsoft’s end and there’s nothing I can do about it without using third party software to stop the updates.

And when it comes to changing configurations and everything on my mom’s computer, she’s extremely paranoid about changing any of it.

So you know the little update box that doesn’t give users a choice whether or not to update on 8.1 and 7 computers? She just leaves it there and never shuts down her laptop. I backed up all of her files and everything on her computer just in case Microsoft tries to force Windows 10 on her computer in some other way, but so far, it hasn’t.

Sometimes I wish I never went into IT because of reasons such as this. Everyone depends on you to fix s~~~ for them while expecting you to “know it all” about IT.

It’s one thing to deal with this kind of thing if you’re getting paid to do it, but it’s another thing entirely if you have to do it on your off time as well.

Reminds me of the commercial where a couple of young people go to visit their grandparents and are greeted with them handing them a couple of electronic devices saying, “none of this works”. A voice says, “the advantage of having grandchildren is free technical support. Funny stuff.

There is a way to prevent Microsoft from uploading windows 10 or rolling back to 7 or 8.1. Here’s the link.
    http://download.cnet.com/blog/download-blog/stop-or-roll-back-a-windows-10-update/?ttag=e415&ftag=TREf2961de&tag=nl.e415&s_cid=e415&ttag=e415&ftag=TREf2961de

BTW. I wish my family gave me the respect to honor my expertise and ask my help on medical matters. I have 3 years of medical school while none of them ever went to college but all I get is resentment and remarks like, “College boy, you think your better than us”.

I just tell people I don’t work for free. They respond “I respect that” and then don’t bother me anymore.

Ha, I had to always update the clock on the VCR as well. I’d take that any day over IT issues.

“College boy, you think your better than us”.

I’d rather not be around any families to be honest. Most families in general just come with gynocentric bulls~~~ attached them. It’s fine in small doses, but in big doses, I’d rather just stay away.

Haha, well that’s a great way of putting it as well.

Yes I am the IT guy in this household and it doesn’t bother me. I just wish my dad didn’t time when he needs me when I’m in the middle of something I’m deep into. Most of the time I save his computer from ransom-ware, and other kinds of vicious attacks on his computer that won’t allow him to function up to the main desktop. Since he has nothing of value stored on his computer, I do a complete reset of the whole unit and send it back to factory settings and there, he can get back online again. Trouble is he keep downloading something bad on his computer from England that pretends to be an anti-virus software, and I told him it’s that and the porn is why he keeps having trouble, because that British software window keeps popping up every time the computer error happens. So I keep bailing him out, and I keep doing all kinds of s~~~ to keep saving that computer from all the harmful stuff he keeps doing to it.

I almost never had hacking problems unless I deliberately recklessly install something to take advantage of something. Some things were browsers, toolbars and surveys so I can get credit points on Webs.com I bought premium features for my websites. Other than that I never have anything really wrong with it, except when the damn thing is slow, and when I make mouse clicks, I would constantly see the words (NOT RESPONDING) showing up with a white blurred window. So damn annoying! My PC is a fighter whenever I make it do something.

I only help my parents with their computer and tablet. Mostly it’s small things like installing a program or telling mom to press F11 because she accidentily did that and can’t see her tabs anymore.

About 10-12 years ago, I was at my uncle’s birthday party, the cousins were all chilling and suddenly my uncle came over to ask if I could help with the computer. I relucantly agreed and he sat me down at it. Turned out they downloaded a s~~~load of viruses and “handy buttons” for their browser. Didn’t take more than two minutes to realize that, so I went back, told him to completely reïnstall everything because “s~~~’s f~~~ed up” and went back to my beer. Then auntie dared ask me to do all that while the rest was having fun. I said “nope” and sat with my cousins again.

Didn’t get any negative comments on it, nor angry looks, but the tone was set.

To avoid people using me like a utility, I either play dumb or make them pay me. In terms of family, I usually play dumb. You’d be surprised how many people are no longer friends once they realize they can’t use you like a tool.

I am my family’s IT person. I majored in Computer Networking. Thinking about switching to another profession like a trade such as plumbing or electrical. There is too much supply and not enough demand for where I live in the IT field.

As far as dealing with IT, I streamline the process for doing pc repairs:

    Antivirus: Avast Free Edition

    Malware: Malwarebytes Free Edition

    Firewall: Comodo Firewall

    Browser: Comodo IceDragon

To block Microsoft telemetry: Spybot Anti-Beacon and DWS-Lite

Dealing with cookies: CCleaner Free Edition

    Remote Desktop: TeamViewer

Browser Extensions: Click & Clean,Disconnect,HTTPS-Everywhere,uBlock Origin, and uMatrix

All of this software is free to use.
For everything else, I stick to free and opensource software as well.

I have it set up where I can just remote in with minimal information from them. Saves me a lot of time and trouble.
Hope this helps. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me.

To fix the updating to Windows 8 or 10 issue, just use Spybot Anti-Beacon and DWS-Lite.
You may or may not have to reinstall Service Pack 1 after doing this. Also, turn on the Windows Firewall when you run DWS-Lite.

For smart phones and tablets, I just use Avast Mobile Security,Battery Saver, and Anti-Theft.

I DESPISE being the IT guy. I have friends who want me to help their friends … and I am on the hook for everyone in the house. Add in kids that want to hack and mod games and they want help doing THAT … NO!

Some of these idiots do stupid things with their computers, jack them all up, and want you to spend your weekend fixing it.

I wouldn’t get away with that in my house, because my dad knows my computer skills are very good. The good part about my dad now being in free version of Windows 10, which he didn’t want, I can claim ignorance, because I really don’t know anything about 10, except I don’t want it. My self-taught computer skills are Windows XP and 7 era.

I’m a jerk and won’t do it with the exception of one elderly aunt or for executives of the companies I serve.

When people find out I’m in IT, I tell them I am only knowledgeable of enterprise server and cloud integration thingies and play dumb.

They can take their malware ridden s~~~ and shove it up their ass. The flea market guy I used to refer them to has retired. No f~~~s to give I’ll send them to Geek Squad for a $300 enema of incompetence.

I would not touch residential with a 10 foot pole. I tell them all to buy Chromebooks.

I’d have zero time off if I let these ID10Ts take advantage of me. I once had to chew on my friend’s ass at a party, because he was telling people I was in IT.

F~~~ ’em their problems are not mine.

I’m doing major upgrades on my personal networking infrastructure which is the equivalent of a multi-site 150 million dollar company. I’ve enough problems of my own these days.

Just recently I bought a Dell latitude d630 for 50 bucks, removed windows vista since that’s going to lose support anyways, and installed Manjaro Linux. Aside from some audio issues. After setting up her system, and a palemoon browser with ublock, and Chromium as a back. My mom has no issues with malware infections or adware for that matter.

Ditto. Chromebooks is a good choice. They only use those things to browser the net anyways. No work, no games that I know of, and I doubt the people I work with save a lot of things on a SSD or a HDD.

I’ve been the family IT for almost two decades now. I loathe it. Not because of the work involved but the belief that its somehow easy and valued less than someone coming to drywall/ fix their house. Which I have also done.

A few years ago I reached my limit on supporting windows and all of its errors. I gave everyone the option: switch over to linux or bring it staples for 80+ an hour. Its not like they would know the difference anyways surfing the net or printing. I made the switch years ago so I see no other reason why I need to keep up with the latest crap from windows on the off chance I need to fix their PC’s.

They’ve all switched over and my hours of tech support have gone down to almost nothing. I still get the odd email asking “On windows I used program X to do this, whats the equivalent?”. No more blue screens, no more random errors, no more my computer is slower than ****, etc.

More time to focus on my own life.

Take it as a chance to train your patience.

Because if you ever end up doing sometime like that for a living, one day a guy is gonna walk in after not showering for a week with a laptop that has a keyboard… Somewhere underneath all that gunk and grease.
After you look at that discussing thing for a moment you’ll realize the worst part is… He’s been jacking off to some vomit inducing porn and getting his hands on the keyboard after that.

Or you could get something like this as well:

If my mom would actually write down the things I show her then it wouldn’t be a pain in the ass. At least my dad tries to figure most stuff out by himself before he sends me an email.
