My mangina writer friend was trying to tell me that we “need” more diversity in the science fiction genre… and that we “need” more women in the STEM fields and that we “need” more immigrants from more countries, etc etc.

What I’m trying to understand is exactly WHY people think we need more diversity. Do they think that having a vagina or being a transgendered person from India gives a person a unique perspective on life that is important for the rest of us to know? Do any of you believe that?

In fact, does anyone here believe that having me inject my ideals, values and opinions into your life would make your life better? Do you believe I should be invited into your home and to your activities… places I have not gone and would otherwise not go… so that I can inject my beliefs and try to change your behaviors so that you can see the world more like I do?

Let’s be honest… if I really believed that, say, the thoughts of angry 15 year old entitled bratty young girls with blue hair and fugly glasses were important to have in my life, I would go to Tumblr. There’s no doubt that I know where they are. And vice versa, if they truly believed in diversity, they’d be coming here to listen to what we have to say so that their lives could be enriched by our diversity.

My feeling is that women argue for diversity in order to get attention and benefits for themselves and men argue for diversity so they can try to get pussy in different sizes and colors. And that’s about it.

The Canadian province of Quebec is “French” speaking.

Diversity, in the true sense has it’s place in a healthy society. But all too often those shouting for diversity are those who wish for anything but, those who can not stand to have their opinions chalenged by a truely diverse population.

All too often diversity is an excuse for quotas and tockenism, neither of which do anybody any good. This years oscars was a classic example of this, blacks boycoted the event because their was not enough “diversity”.

I come from a very “diverse” area, meaning there are a lot of pakis. But appart from a small part of that community, ie young men, there isn’t much intergration going on. And the ones who do intergrate do so only to gain access to british wiminz, who they consider to be sluts. So diversity is all very well but it has to come with intergration otherwise diversity can easily become division.

The whole idea of “token black character” exists because of needless shoe horning of “diversity”. If my script or visions involve four straight white males kicking down doors, by God my script is going to involve four straight white males kicking down doors.

I never understood the whole idea of race especially in my home country where it’s more or less RACIAL EQUALITY OR DEATH. If you’re dead serious about racial acceptance, you would DO AWAY with the constant reminders that we are different. We have enough division as it is with religion and social standing.

People often whine about needing representation. What about just looking up the best damn individual rather than the best damn black, asian, hispanic. The biggest stirrers of s~~~ storms are those shouting the loudest about representation.

I had to jump in on this as my main passion is reading, particularly Sci-Fi.

Of course I got the inevitable backlash of being sexist, racist blah blah blah. I do read female authors but the field is dominated by men, so most sci-fi books I read are written by men.

Diversity is to coerce people into doing something that they probably won’t like, in a bid to please someone else. In a way it is insulting as it suggests you’re incapable of finding the things you enjoy or have a natural tendency to be better at by yourself.

Trying to force someone to be diverse in their actions, such as STEM subjects, will only produce a lesser standard of quality. Nobody excels at something they do not enjoy doing or have an inbuilt aptitude for. Imagine how great the world would be if everyone let everyone do and be what they were best at.

Women are so bad, if they changed the law so I kept the house, I still wouldn't marry one. I'd rather be homeless.

Here is the funny thing about that there is no barrier to women creating works of science fiction. The door has been open and has remained open for an extended period of time. If there is a lack of diversity then it is the fault of women.

Diversity doesn’t make it better, or worse for that matter.

Being better written makes it better.

The problem with these people is they’re just whining for the sake of whining. Diversity in writing can be great, if it’s actually incorporated in the writing and organic. It’s awful if a transgendered woman just appeared out of nowhere. It’s like when you’re reading it, it’s so blatant and contrived, you know that character is put there specifically to represent a minority demographic.

Women in stem fields can also be great, if they knew what the hell they are doing. But putting a bunch of retarded women who haven’t a clue in there is dumb.

That’s the point. Females tend to write s~~~ty sci-fi, particularly the “hard science” type that requires research, fact checking and deep understanding that is so popular these days.

Of course, desiring equality of outcome more than equality of opportunity, the “community” insists that more men choose to read the s~~~ty female written sci-fi rather than insist that women write sci-fi that’s worth reading, or that people just simply read whatever they like and let the invisible hand sort it out.

My answer to him was “If you want more diversity of voices in your community, then sit down and shut up and let someone else talk. You’re a white cis-gendered man… YOU are the PROBLEM, not part of the solution. When you’re crossing a bridge do you want that bridge designed by the most “diverse” engineers or by the engineers who are the best at building bridges?

STEM is entirely results oriented, and the results matter. When a bridge fails, people die. So the only criteria for STEM fields should be STEM ability. When you start applying irrelevant criteria like race or sex, you get s~~~ty STEM results. And people will die.

If women want more women in STEM, then women should get better at STEM. And if they can’t do that, well then it’s not the world’s problem to fix for them.

That’s exactly how it is. I’m totally fine with diversity in the context that the most qualified shouldn’t be denied for the job because they are a woman or a minority, you know…like once upon a time when being a black dude straight up meant you wouldn’t get hired in certain places no matter how qualified you were because you were black.

The modern version of diversity has it ass backwards and we have the most qualified often being denied because they are white males. Forced diversity is just doing to group X what society wants to prevent happening to group Y…its really a shame. If I ran the show it would be illegal for any college, employer, etc to even ask or consider race in applications.
