I was chilling in a bar last night, drinking some beers, having fun with a blond chick I used to date back in the days but still hang on with occasionally.

The waitress was not watching the tables at all (this continued 20-30 minutes at least). We were out of drinks and finally I went to the bar to get more. However, I found her with her back turned towards the people, playing with the alcohol bottles while smoking (just completely neglecting any work or duties, not keeping an eye on anything).. I stood there waiting for her to turn around and finally get my beers but she just didn’t.. I waited for a minute or two before I decided it’s a bit ridiculous so I went to the side of the bar to finally grasp her attention.

I finally asked for two Heinekens and was just basically waiting for a rather casual confirmation (or so I thought). What does she do? She looks at me with the nastiest look you can imagine and says “YOU CAN’T HAVE TWO HEINEKENS”, then she follows with “LEAVE THE BAR AREA”. I was surprised by this nasty answer but nevertheless got serious really quickly so I just stared her down for at least 15 to 25 seconds (not leaving the bar area), basically non-verbally stating “don’t f~~~ with me, little t~~~”. Then I just went back. Immediately after I got back to my seat she did get two Heinekens and brought them grudgingly.

The whole situation left me thinking.. a man would very rarely be this hostile without a reason, nor neglect his duties the way she purposefully did. And thinking about it, I really believe women have become much more hostile towards people at their workplace (and not only). I see it everywhere, not just in related areas of service. Such vile behavior is just disgraceful and is actually hurting legitimate businesses. Business owners need to be extra picky in regards to female staff and even then similar outcomes are difficult to avoid.

That behavior doesn’t hurt the business if you stay and spend your money there anyway. Plenty of other bars offer good service. I would have left, probably after a word to the manager as to why.

You should have told the manager, get her fired so she has a reason to be miserable, I’ll bet she shortchanges anyone she can! There’s some real f~~~ed up women and they’re everywhere!!!

She probably thought you were being a jerk to, I don’t understand how they can maintain these ridiculous points of view.

You bring up good points, guys. I should have probably reported her to the manager but I was there to have fun. She brought the beers as well, meaning it would have been my word against hers and I bet she would have tried to lie stating that she said “you can have two heinekens” (or some similar lie). You know how manipulative those disrespectful c~~~s can get. So I just ignored the issue and didn’t give her ANY tip (nor will I ever if I meet her).

Thinking about it, it’s actually she that is screwed by her own behavior because she is losing money, not me. And the business may suffer if I decide I don’t want to deal with similar BS some of the future nights out. In any case, I decided to avoid the even bigger mood killer and fuss of reporting and explaining the situation further and just continued the fun part.

The sad thing is she’s probably the owner’s GF, or GF’s cousin or such, and won’t get fired unless she stabs a customer in front of witnesses.

Modern waitresses are a joke. They’d rather be doing anything but serving you. I’m not sure how places stay in business.

    Fuck this planet.

Never go there again. There are far more bars than there are courteous bar owners/employees. As for telling them why you left forever, don’t bother — They can hire a consultant for some big money to find that for them.

Not that long ago, I was on the road and ate at a national chain coffee shop. What could go wrong? Well, the waitress went wrong, that’s what. Her tip was an extravagantly written ZERO on the credit card receipt. I’ll not likely be back; the road is long and the coffee shops many.

That’s what I thought as well. Spending your time to give them feedback and explain what you think is wrong is actually a valuable and helpful thing. Clients generally don’t owe them that favor.

    Well, @byron, there’s always Yelp.

I’m a patient guy, but I have a low tolerance for bad service at restaurants and bars. They’re in a very competitive industry, and there’s no excuse for neglecting or abusing the customers. On my own, I walk out if they ignore me too long. With a group, sometimes you just have to go with the consensus.

[Disclaimer: There is no female villain in this story. All the restaurant people were male.] Last fall, I met my sister and BiL for dinner in New Orleans. We had had a big late lunch, so we just wanted a light supper (not easy to find in the Big Easy). My sister had scoped out menus online, and chose this place on that basis. We sat down and waited about ten minutes without anyone saying as much as ‘Hello.’ At this point I suggested going elsewhere: “This city is full of awesome restaurants with great service. We shouldn’t put up with this.” But two against one, we stayed. A couple minutes later, I went over to the maitre d’ station and politely (sort of) asked them to send over a waiter. They seemed a little embarrassed, and treated us OK the rest of the evening. BiL paid. Point is, you have to say something or they learn nothing.

ETA – None of us has been back there since. Then again, we don’t live in NOLA.

True that @stanandreas. I’m with you on that boat. If they fail to serve you on time the viable thing is to either leave or go to them yourself and ask. Both are valid options. Leaving speaks a lot stronger but also happens more rarely.

You’re right the tolerance for bad service in such places should be lowered a bit since you’re paying 3x to 10x the cost of the items just because of the promise of a good service and good time. That’s the whole point really.. and when they fail to deliver on that there’s just nothing left.

Absolutely, @byron! It always astonishes me when the service sucks, but the place is packed. Or when a place has a line out the door and a 90 minute wait to be seated. IMO, no one has ever prepared a meal or a drink worth that kind of BS. People are sheep.

All I can figure is that there are a lot of men who actually like being abused. I am not in their number, but I am in the oddball ranks for other reasons.

Insane. I never ever had this happen in here, (Latvia). I can’t imagine it ever happening here.
When I visited Russia, aswell, had very good service in different cafes, pizzerias and restaurants.

service in the west is garbage

    oh my.
and btw, tips here is not necessary, completely up to a customer. Sometimes I do tip (with friends). And its well deserved for a welcoming, fast, quality service.

How about a little inside information, Byron? I’ve two friends from my grammar school days who own bars/restaurants. One, who’ve I posted about before, was born into the business. The other got into it after an injury in college derailed their hopes of a sports career. They both are among the hardest working men I know and they both would want to know about that s~~~ty waitress as soon as possible.

US members may be familiar with a “reality” show called Bar Rescue. It’s “soft scripted” like most of it’s ilk as the producers make “suggestions” to the people involved in each episode in order to heighten the tensions. While exaggerated, the problems the experts host is brought into fix are real enough and nearly all of them involve s~~~ty employees. Personnel issues make up a huge part of my friends’ workloads and that’s because changes in our cultural mean the vast majority of bartenders and waitresses are young women with all the drama they bring. If my friends could never hire hire another 20-something woman again they would do so in a heartbeat.

Write a letter to the establishment in question. (If the venue is part of chain, write the corporation.) Not an e-mail, not a Yelp review, none of that childish s~~~. Write a letter which has your name on it because you’re a man. Explain the incident in a neutral tone of voice. State that she was ignoring her tables and took umbrage when you attempted to order drinks from the bar. Note the time and date the best you can. State the waitress’ name if you can remember it and describe her too. Give that restaurant the information you’d want if you were the poor bastard managing it.

Do not date. Do not impregnate. Do not co-habitate. Above all, do not marry. Reclaim and never again surrender your personal sovereignty.

Wow, glad I’m not the only person that feels that way. I’ll wait a few minutes at my favorite breakfast place for a seat, but that’s about my limit. Plenty of places out there.
