Its tempting to say that originality in screenplays has dried up. Look at quirky, original films from the 90s. Writers aint half what they used to be, and Im saying that as a young guy; I was 9 years old in 1995! But is it really true? Is there a writer drought, or is it an optical illusion from an overabundance of heroines, superheroes and ‘Woke’ writing the last 15 years?

Where are the new Michael Crichtons of the world? Maybe that is a naive statement

Consider this list of a few one-off original films of the 90s. Can anyone show me similar ones this century? I think I will make the case the there is still, good writing and directing going on. Its just hard to sift thru chicken feed and find the glitter.

12 Monkeys (1995) writer David Peoples (Unforgiven & Bladerunner 1982) He is too old to write now, but there are writers carrying the torch.

Being John Malkovich (1999) writer Charlie Kaufman. A little bland for my coarse tastes but he’s undeniably an art mind. He wrote and directed Eternal Sunshine of Spotless Mind. That movie was truly original.

Matrix (1999) The Wachowskis By itself, its a cult classic. Later the Wachowskis made Cloud Atlas, (2012) a gem that never got acknowledged.

Sphere and Wag the Dog Barry Levinson didnt write them but he directed them in 1997 and 1998. Some of his later stuff included Bill Murray Rock the Kasbah (2015) a lite hearted film.

Pulp Fiction 1994 Love him or hate him, Tarantino has been at it for awhile and still going strong. Once upon a Time in Hollywood was just as brilliant as Django and Inglorious Bastards.

The whole process of creating a film is messy. Sometimes the writer is the directer, other times, the original writer is some dude who wrote a book 30 years ago… Nevertheless, I keep an eye out for what grabs me and I also check these Director names from time to time. There is PLENTY that is worth watching, besides ridiculous movies like Aeon Flux, Ultra Violet, Resident Evil 14… Hunger Games 25 … you get the point.

Robert Eggers The Witch (2015) The Lighthouse (2019) this guy is only 36 years old. fvcking love him already

Yorgos Lanthimos The Lobster (2015) The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017) wrote and directed both!

Jonathan Glazer Under the Skin, Birth (this guy earned his rep thru commercials and music videos… deserves a big budget)

Ridley Scott Alien, Bladerunner, Gladiator, Prometheus, Alien Covenant …

James Cameron when its Rated R… He made Abyss and Aliens so I mention him out of respect

David Fincher Alien 3 (1992) Seven (1995) Fightclub (1999) Girl with the Dragon tattoo (2011) Gone Girl (2014)

Denis Villeneuve Dune (2020) Sicario, Bladerunner 2049, Arrival (2016)

Wes Anderson The Royal Tenanbaums, The Life Aquatic, The Grand Budapest Hotel

Steven Spielberg when its Rated R … Schindlers List, Minority Report, Saving Private Ryan.

Steven Soderbergh pretty mainstream guy but I liked Solaris (2002) Logan Lucky. Probably rent The Laundromat.

Neil Bloomkamp Chappie, Elysium, District 9. I like him because he gives it to you raw and with color. He knows what we want to see.

Martin Scorsese Gangs of New York (2002) The Aviator (2004) The Departed (2006) this guy is still at it. LOL

Christopher Nolan The Prestige, Interstellar (INTERSTELLAR deserves a ton more credit)

Danny Boyle: Sunshine (2007) The Beach (2000) 28 Days Later (2002)

Alex Garland Exmachina, 28 Days later

Terry Gilliam: Zero Theorem (2012) 12 Monkeys, Fear and Loathing

Alejandro González Iñárritu: Birdman, The Revenant both films are breathtakingly beautiful.

James Gray … Lost City of Z, Ad Astra. Im suprised that Ad Astra struck me so well, it was written and directed by someone Id normally be uninterested in.

The Lighthouse actually shows a Mermaid’s pussie. Its awesome. We need more of this type of ambition.

Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Fincher (2011) has a number of sexual scenes that will make you think his name is David Flincher!

Never got to enjoy Schindler’s List when I was a kid because it was too hard an R for a kid to see. But when I finally did watch it last year (2018!) I actually kind of rooted for the bad guy half the movie! I dont have a dog in that fight so shoot me! LOL. The guy was a monster… but a strangely amusing one. I loved him in Red Dragon!

They simply don’t have the ability, education or imagination to write anything any more. That’s why you now get endless rehashes of old movies.

Who can write science fiction nowadays? There’s no-one to follow Asimov, Dick, Clark, Heinlein, Vonnegut, ‘Doc’ Smith and so on.

    Great list of movies!

What I see these days just kind of sucks. Its the sign of the times. In fact, I miss the old Disney Magic of films like Tomorrowland.

What can you expect from today when everyone gets p~~~ed off at everything? Sadly, the old Plantation came up with the best movies.

You are all alone. If you have been falsely accused of RAPE, DV, PLEASE let all men know about the people who did this. http://register-her.net/web/guest/home
