This might be a little bit off topic from the usual postings on this forum, but I think this is worth talking about.
Recently the Skylake i7 6700k was released, it turns out that skylake runs under 14nm.

Basically to make a powerful processor you need the following.
    A high clock speed
    One metric ton of transistors
And power usage below say 100watts

This can be done using a thing called die shrinking, lets say for example you have a dual core with say 1.8 billion transistors running at 4.5GHG & 12nm.
The processor would use about 150 watts and produce heat the could be removed by liquid cooling. However just for an example lets say you where to increase the die to say 85nm and keep number of transistors and clock the same. The thermal energy would increase and more likely than not need liquid nitrogen cooling, this would make said processor uneconomical. So die shrinking is used to reduce the amount of thermal energy produced by making the transistors smaller and packing together more closely. However this has its limit because when you hit about 5nm you start to have electrons jump and make the processor unreliable.

Either way I through this was worth sharing and it might interest you guys.

I love this stuff, thanks! Just for a sense of scale, compare the 14nm minimum feature size on this chip with the wavelength of visible light, which is 400nm (violet) – 700nm (red). In other words, those boogers are tiny!

Society asks MGTOWs: Why are you not making more tax-slaves?

Well listen to you two with your round spectacles and buck teeth ?

However, I shall forgive you this geekery if you give me sound tech advise when I make a future new pc purchase.

I will admit I absolutely love the gadgets in my office. Thankfully some nurd turned all that backend stuff in to normal speak for my average mind ?

They could get down to about 5nm before things start to simply fail.

    5nm? I thought 40nm was tiny
I also agree that shrinks should die

Either way it is not an issue of debate, getting too small means electrons jump.

Tests Verify Quantum Effects in Processor … the video in this article is essentially saying that they can do binary computing with a quantum processor..

    this is a better explanation

Thank you felix … that’s a very educational vid for me. I think after a third view I’ll get it all ☺

Quantum computers are useful for very specific tasks outside of that they are useless.

The future of computing is more in organization rather than scale. For example the ivy bridge and haswell generations both used a 22nm process, but haswell is a hell of a lot faster at h264 video encoding with software that uses its improved GPU.

Quantum computers are useful for very specific tasks outside of that they are useless.

For example quantum computers can be used to work out exactly what women want, not that anyone needs to know that. Of course as soon as you figure out what a woman wants she wants something else anyways, so it’s useless.

It would take the quantum computer days to figure out what a woman wants.
