Years ago in the late 1970’s I came upon a cheap pulp fiction book about a conspiracy to undermine the US government by the Soviet Union. I’d like to find and reread the book so I’m asking for help identifying the title and author.

The premise was the current CIA director murders his best friend a billionaire and will only accept defense from a court appointed lawyer for the murder. The lawyer becomes the main character and as tries to build a defense finds out the billionaire was a Soviet mole and most of his wealth was funneled to him by the USSR. Over the decades, the mole supports many political campaigns both Republican and Democrat. His one requirement is that you have to be an attorney to get campaign funds. The plot is that eventually most those politicians will win enough elections and eventually enough will rise to national office that the great majority of legislators will be attorneys in the Senate and House of Representatives. As attorneys gathered in office, they will all backstab one another often enough and never really administer passing laws that do anything. They all argue, can’t agree and the difference between parties becomes obscured. Thus eventually, the US government will decline, not be able to decide what to do in a crisis, poorly spend the public wealth and eventually become ripe enough for a Soviet overthrow of the government.

Seems to me, it might have been a real and successful plan. Can anybody help me out?

Hi Dave. I don’t much buy into the conspiracy aspects of American decline, but I don’t totally discount it either. Still, if the USA is in decline, it brought it on itself, and any effort to put that on a conspiracy theory is nothing more than an effort to not put the blame where it truly lies, because that would be uncomfortable for many.

And I truly hate to say it, but I have ceased giving half a s~~~ about the USA anymore. Yes I would defend it if need be against some asshole group like ISIS, but not against China or Russia, because quite frankly I don’t see a significant difference in how authority is actually practiced (as opposed to whatever is on paper, say in some obscure dead document like our quaint Constitution). Their govts are more openly oppressive, and DC professes freedoms while in fact the USA is rapidly falling down the liberty scale to where it is now mid-pack amongst developing and developed nations when it comes to personal and press freedoms.  At the rate we are sliding, we will be close to the bottom of that pack in about 10 to 15 years, below a lot of South American countries, even (we are already below a few).

Either way, just as I said f~~~ California, my birth-state, and took off when it because semi-dictatorial, I am unfortunately making contingency plans to do the same for the USA. It’s still a decent place to make/bank money for the time being, but I refuse to contribute financially or voluntarily to a society hellbent on regulating the crap out of and oppressing me or others – stealing our property, livelihood, liberties and individual sovereignty – for whatever reason, while rewarding dregs, lawbreakers, or whiny s~~~ social groups of whatever ilk.

Who needs the book? We’re living it! The undermining has been severe we’re no longer on a beach, we’re in a riptide watching the shore disappear!

I have read many a thriller, but I’m afraid that one might have before I started in on the genre.
Here’s one I want to read … if they don’t get to the publisher first.
