I had the task of keeping our prima-donna 3D modeling architect happy with a new computer. His request? “A fast f~~~ing computer.” Management’s request. “don’t break the bank”.

    Sigh…

So I have set up a 10 core Xeon processor running at 3.5ghz (the software will not see more than 16 cores so dual processors was redundant and a 3.5ghz 16 core xeon was an extra 2 grand, so 10 cores it is.)
32 gig of high speed memory and dual Nvidia 4gig GPU’s.
Storage was a problem because it would bottleneck the software during read’s and write’s to file. SSD was fine but not fast enough, SAS 15k rpm stripe still wasn’t fast enough.
    Solution PCIe SSD.
This is so fast it will rip your nipples off. Sas Drive sequential reads are 212mb/sec This intel pcie drive is 2200mb/sec.
I have to say when I set it all up and installed the software it was like I became this fast.

Prima-donna was happy but didn’t admit it because he’s an asshole but after testing this and seeing how fast it was I replaced my existing HD’s in my desktop computers and am living large on speed. Its Red Bull for your computer.

What about stability? I read a manual on overclocking the processor by increasing it’s voltage in BIOS. I’m under the impression that speed compromises stability, I’m no wiz, just wondering how other programs run, the manual said some programs may crash while others run fine. Just wondering???

Thats the interesting thing about PCIe SSD hard drives. There is no overclocking. The Solid state disks are just memory. The PCIe bus on new computers has the ability to move more data faster than SATA or SAS. You can overclock a processor depending on heat removal. Best way is with liquid cooling because it moves more heat faster.

Sounds awesome. Long way from the 8086 processor days.

No longer can we walk away, we must run. Remove the motive power.

Depends on the processor, OS etc. I only run Linux so this works pretty well – can’t vouch for Windows.

Depending on what you’re doing and how much load you’re throwing at it, having an overclocked proc can cause very occasional lockups, but they’re pretty rare in my experience. Again, I’m running Linux so YMMV.

Is this computer just for business such as rendering or private for gaming? I would like to see some benchmarks including boot time and Frames Per Second on some high graphics games. I am thinking of building a gaming computer that will have to last me a long time as my income has gone way down and building another computer might never happen. I would also like to see the type of Mobo, RAM, PSU, and type of cooling you are using. Thanks.

Ya mean I’m driving a model T? putt putt putt?

You should see my 950lb lawn mower from the late 60’s, it can tear through a bumper and drag a car away! Don’t ask me how I know, it’s embarrassing…

I highly recommend craigslist then. You can get some pretty high end hardware for cheap that someone wants to get rid of because the video card or a memory crapped out. Figure out what’s broke / still usable and replace it, and bam you’re in business. And a a fraction of the cost new or even on ebay.

They key is to look at the hardware and be able to recognize when half the part alone would be worth it.

Case in point, I bought a fairly high end machine from a guy for about $120 which he advertised as “not booting”.

Sure enough, when I got it home it wouldn’t post, but the 2 8G high speed memory chips, the 120G SSD drive, the high end Nvidia card, case, power supply, and motherboard were easily worth the money. All I need to buy now is the processor as that is what is actually fried.

It’s super helpful if you have a comparable machine to swap parts to for testing.

Oh, even better is when they got a virus or some s~~~ like that and want to sell it for cheap because it’s “slow.” Nothing wrong with the physical hardware just needs an OS wipe…..

Often times it is in fact women or their dumbass Chads. Even the simplest fixes…….elude them. F~~~e em. I buy their s~~~ for pennies on the dollar and load Linux.

    Like a brand new computer.

Great advise, I’ll do that. Just wished I had thought of it. Thanks

That is an awesome piece of kit, I was looking at an upgrade later in the year anyway (from a Sandy Bridge CPU to something more modern including a new motherboard and RAM) but will have to add one of these badboys to the list.

Once the price starts to drop I may have to invest in one or two of those. 🙂
