This has just recently come to my attention… apparently there’s a huge trend in adults buying coloring books.
In this article from nymag.com, a neuroscientist attempts to explain the rise of adult coloring books.
It would seem the biggest driver of this trend is people wanting to feel creative even though they have no creative ability and wanting to be deliberately silly and un-productive.
In other words, acting like children.
Now for me, the definition of a hobby is “work you pay for the privilege of doing”. My #1 hobby is astronomy and let me tell you, buddy, I PAY and WORK for it. Just last night I hauled my 160 pounds of telescope and accessories out to a mountainside park to set it up and share with several hundred members of the general public.
For four hours I stood out in the cold and wind and explained over and over again to children, adults, teenagers and old folks that they are looking at Jupiter and its Galilean moons, how big it is, how far away it is, why its light shimmers and so forth, not because it felt creative or was vegetatively non-productive but because I care about astronomy and I am willing to work my ass off to share a bit of knowledge and wonder with regular people who might otherwise never experience these things.
Even a hobby that is purely for one’s own enjoyment can be work… setting up model trains, building a log cabin, going fishing… nearly every hobby worth doing involves specific knowledge, some expense and some hard work.
Coloring in a coloring book is a narcissistic waste of time and effort. For the people who do this, I can’t think of a more juvenile and self-indulgent activity… all they need to complete the trifecta is cupcakes with sprinkles and a squatty potty for when they have to go boom boom.
Now here’s what I really want to know which the article doesn’t say: These coloring books… are they being purchased by women or by men? I can’t find a serious breakdown of the demographics. I’m sure it’s the same “adults” who are going to “adult pre-schools” and “adult summer camps” and my gut instinct tells me it’s mostly women being chased by a group of skinny jeans manginas, but I don’t want to be prejudiced. Maybe there are a bunch of electricians, plumbers and building contractors sneaking off to color butterflies and shrubberies in their spare time.
Does anyone have the info?
I don’t have any stats for you but I have an opinion. I think people are so broke in ‘merica, this is the most cost efficient distribution of entertainment funds. I would also wager that it is mostly women. But then again, I thought My Little Brony was a joke too.
In other words, acting like children.
While I prefer other hobbies. You would be surprised how useful a coloring book could be to an adult. It has been shown hand-eye mental exercise hobbies such a coloring books, MMO video games, and even building with legos, can help prevent the onset of senility in adults by exercising their brains.
If an adult finds a hobby on using coloring books. More power to them.
Maybe they want to learn more about drawing. You have to start somewhere.
And this is a much more constructive hobby than going to a bar and getting drunk.
i think it’s part of the “dumbing down ” of society.
maybe if someone is recovering from a serious health problem it might be useful.
or if they are mentally retarded.
otherwise why the f~~~ would i waste my time “coloring ” ?
maybe the drug epidemic plays a part ..
get high and color ? i dunno..
just shows how people are now-days..
perfect for the emotionally stunted idiots to play with !
a first grade level achievement for grown-ups ! WOW !I usto enjoy coloring with my son.
It’s kind of a mindless distraction.
The reality that the RedPill exposes is f~~~ed up.frankly my dear i don't give a damn
Meh, I’ve replaced females with video games so I can’t complain.
Love is just alimony waiting to happen. Visit mgtow.com.
I actually like those coloring books. I saw the images showing in that web link, and I think those adults did a beautiful job.
Look everyone needs a productive hobby, and hobbies do lead to career choices and preferences. Take me for example; my hobbies are: building and fixing PC desktops, web designing, building 3D puzzles, bike riding, video games (used to be big back in the day), and downloading. My hobby of fixing and building computers didn’t even start with a computer at all. I believe ever since I was a kid, I’ve always loved putting things together. For over 20 years, I’ve built dozens and dozens of 3D puzzles, and now I have a miniature 3D puzzle city in my room. I used to build buildings as tall as 7 feet (really) out of foam boards, I painted them, I made model roads and bridges. I used to build anything out of LEGOs and loved it. I used to fix machines since the age of 12 when our VCRs and VHS tapes were damaged, and when it becomes too expensive to take it to a repair shop, you have to learn to fix those things yourself. So between my building things, fixing things, computer skills and abilities all I self-taught I want to get my A+ Certification so I can build and fix desktops and make better money and have a better odds of landing a job than some college kid with massive debt.
Another major hobby I had, but gave up for electronic tech was meteorology. For 20 years I studied the weather through tornado documentaries, books, and weather kits, and school projects. In fact, it was a first career choice until I realized that I can probably do better in the tech field than the weather field. It was the Helen Hunt movie, Twister, is what inspired me to take up meteorology. Speaking of the weather, I guess we’re suppose to have strong weather on Tuesday including tornadoes while I’ll be judging at a polling station for our Illinois primary. No problem, there’s a tornado siren in the backyard of the clubhouse I’ll be working, and that meeting is in the back.
Again, everyone needs a hobby, and your careers and career preferences through hobbies.

It’s kind of a mindless distraction. You get a pass for spending time with your son… assuming he’s under 18 at the time. For all the other “adults” who enjoy coloring, all I can say is be sure to cast your vote for Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho for president this coming November.
