Cobra Kai series review and fan theories (Spoiler Warning)

I know there have been other Cobra Kai series threads on this forum. But, none of the have gone in depth, talked about the spoilers, and possible plots in future seasons of the Cobra Kai series.

Yes. Cobra Kai has the green light for season two to premiere 2019. I just hope the next season is at least twenty episodes, instead of ten episodes.

There has been countless times where sequels and remakes have been tried on older franchises, with varying degrees of success.

The Karate Kid has had to sequel, as soft reboot, and a hard reboot.

But, it seems that it one waits long enough, one may get a direct sequel worthy of the first movie.

The Cobra Kai series is a worthy sequel.

Cobra Kai is on Youtube Red and other looking into.

Not only did William Zabka and Ralph Macchio reprise their roles. William Zabka as Johnny Lawrence. Ralph Macchio as Daniel LaRusso. Both men had a hand in the production of the series.

Both of these men took their roles seriously, and it shows.

Cobra Kai is a ten episode series. Each episode is around twenty-seven minutes long, except for the last episode, which is thirty-six minutes long.

The acting, writing, directing of the series is top notch. The choreography is solid.

This is old school martial arts scenes. This is not special effects type Matrix style fight scenes.

The Cobra Kai is very respectful towards the source material and the people whom made the franchise what it is.

The Cobra Kai series offers respect nods to the late Noriyuki “Pat” Morita, whom played Mr. Miyagi, and to Mr. Miyagi, whom in the story died years ago in the Karate Kid timeline.

Also, this series is love letter to 1980’s American culture, 1980’s rock music, and everything that is cool since then. Even Deadpool is mentioned a few times in the Cobra Kai series.

The Cobra Kai series does a good job of allowing new viewers, whom have not see the original Karate Kid movies, understand what is going on.

This is not about good versus evil. This is about two men whom circumstances have brought back into each others lives and how their deal with their shared tragedy past.

Decades ago both men took actions which haunt the other to present day.

Both men have taken a stance of not starting a fight, but finishing a fight. Due to this, their rivalry is very passive-aggressive.

Unfortunately, circumstances beyond their control and old emotional wounds restart their rivalry.

If there is a villain in season one, that villain is political correctness. At some points, this series takes a shot at political correctness every THIRTY SECONDS!

The amounts if red pills in the series are off the chart.

By the end of episode two, the series has gone through the entire red pill index. And episode three is charting waters.

The Cobra Kai series is both a tribute and flip of the script of Karate Kid movies.

While the series follows both Johnny and Daniel, and those connects to the two men, the series is mostly through the eyes of Johnny. And the series does a good job of showing how from a different point of view, Johnny was the good guy and Daniel was the bully.

Say what you will, but in the Karate Kid I film, after be beaten, Johnny is a good sport, gets up, and while Daniel is given the trophy, Johnny tells Daniel he is “alright”. It also helps that at the beginning of Karate Kid II film, Mr. Miyagi saves Johnny from his teacher’s wrath.

On a side note, this is likely the real reason Mr. Miyagi wanted to take Daniel to Japan, to get him out of town while the heat died down. And given the events of Karate Kid III, Mr. Miyagi’s concerns were well warranted.

Johnny has hit rock bottom. Is haunted by his past and those whom once cared for him have long given up on him.

Daniel is a victim of success. He has a family, a successful chain of car dealerships, but his children do not respect him and without Mr. Miyagi being there as a father figure, Daniel has begun to lose his moral center. Though, his wife is loving and faithful, and she does her best to keep him on a good path for their family. Also, Amanda co-runs Daniel’s dealership company.

In addition, Amanda is against Daniel’s rekindled rivalry with Johnny.

At the beginning, Johnny ends up saving a teenage boy, whom just moved to town, from bullies. After much thinking on it, he decides to teach the boy martial arts and to open a new Cobra Kai Dojo for new students.

Johnny becomes a sort of dark reflection of Mr. Muyagi.

Do not misunderstand, while Johnny is rough around the edges and he can be an asshole, but he has a good heart. It is just that life keeps f~~~ing him over.

Johnny’s intentions are good. But, the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

At this point in Johnny’s life, there are a lot of parallels with Mr. Miyagi at the beginning of the Karate Kid I film. Both tend hit the sauce a bit to much. Both are loners.

If you read between the lines of Karate Kid I and II, before becoming a soldier, Mr. Miyagi really f~~~ed up his life. Though, unlike Mr. Miyagi, Johnny still has some p~~~ and vinegar, he still seeks glory, while Mr. Miyagi’s war experiences likely purged him of seeking glory. Johnny is very rough around the edges and he lacks Mr. Miyagi’s inner peace. But, deep down Johnny is actually a go person. And Johnny wants to start a dojo to pull his life together.

Sink or swim training scenes are both cruel and hilarious. From one scene, I am sure Johnny has seen the move Dodge Ball. But, later on this training is shown to be very effected.

Reality does ensue when Johnny opens his dojo. Regulations, rent, paperwork, finding students. But that is part of the charm of this series.

Also, as this goes on the rivalry between Johnny and Daniel continue in very passive-aggressive ways.

The Cobra Kai series does show if circumstances has been different, Johnny and Daniel would have likely become very good friends.

Even Johnny makes some a comment to Daniel that he would like to do friendly sparring match, like Rocky and Apollo at the end of Rocky III. It does not happen. At least not yet.

This series is also about how fathers and father figures, or lack there of, can effect the lives of people.

This is seen in both Johnny and Daniel, along with the new characters.

Johnny and Daniel have gone from being students to being teachers. And both are shown to be skilled teachers. Though, their teaching methods and beliefs are very different.

The new characters a very fleshed out. The teenage drama plot lines in the series are very well done.

It should be noted, this series knows red pills very well.

First example, Daniel’s wife, Amanda. When Daniel restarts his interest in martial arts, Amanda is shown to be tore between her husband going back to being the “chad” she fell in love with, and being the “beta” that has made their family a fortune. That with Daniel going back into martial arts, it will harm their car dealership business.

The Cobra Kai series very good climax and cliffhanger that has you wanting more, but leaves at a point that is good.

Now, for some spoilers and fan theories.

There are comments through out the Cobra Kai series that the movies could all be tied together into one timeline. Except for the Animated series. Do not ask. The animated would not fit the series.

To give you an idea what this means. If you look under the hood of this franchise, as if this franchise was a car, it would be a sports car that purred like a kitten, but could roar like a loin.

Due to the sequels and reboots, which can be connected together, this series has loads and loads of characters to work from.

There are at least TEN martial arts groups and other fighting groups are directly involved in the Karate Kid franchise.

There is enough material here for five or six good seasons.

    To name these groups.

    There is Johnny’s Cobra Kai.

Daniel’s Miyagi-Do (At the end of Cobra Kai, Daniel decides to open his own dojo at the end of the series.

John Kreese’s Cobra Kai. This was Johnny’s teacher.

Terry Silver’s Cobra Kai. In the Karate Kid franchise, Terry Silver founded Cobra Kai and he is a good friend of John Kreese. He gave the Cobra Kai dojo to John as a gift. Also, he pulled a number of Daniel in Karate Kid III.

In The Next Karate Kid film, there is Mr, Miyagi’s other student, Julie Pierce. It stands to reason, Julie Pierce might have opened her own Miyagi-Do dojo (More on this in a bit.)

Alpha Elite, whom are the gang Julie Pierce fought in that move.

Toguchi-Do from Karate II. Chozen Toguchi probably would like a rematch. And he likely is a martial arts teacher. Chozen was the son of Mr. Miyagi’s former best friend, Sato Toguchi. Very complicated stories that most of Karate Kid II is about. The events caused Chozen and his father, Sato, to have a falling out.

From the 2010 Karate Kid reboot, which happened in China, there is Dre Parker, from Detroit, whom is taught by kung-fu Master Han. Kung-fu, not Karate.

By 2018, Dre Parker is an adult and likely as master of Kung-fu. He probably returned to the U.S. and to Los Angeles to break into showbix, or maybe stunt work. But he wants to do so by first proofing he a martial arts master that can teach others to be badass.

Dre moves to Reseda (where Karate Kid is set), because it is one of the most cheaper places to live in LA.

This would be injoke for Jaden Smith, whom played Dre Parker, and whom has been trying to become a star for the last few years, with mixed results. Mr. Jaden Smith is okay, he is just a little inexperienced at acting. But, he is getting there.

And before you think this could not happen, one of the executive producers for Cobra Kai is, Will Smith. Yes. That Will Smith, whom is the father of Jaden Smith. So, Mr. Jaden Smith reprising his role as Dre is a very real possibility.

This would be an interesting addition. To show the difference between karate and kung-fu. Also, it breaks up the dynamic of just Miyagi-Do and Cobra Kai rivalry.

Dre and his Dojo could be the Fei Long (Street Fighter) of the Karate Kid franchise. A badass in his own right and an honor rival whom gets the regular cast to get their act together

But, that would likely be in season three. From the cliffhanger of season one, it is not hard to guess what season two will be about.

The next group would be the Fighting Dragons, whom were the rival school against Dre in 2010 Karate Kid.

The final school would be Topanga karate school. The defending champion of the Under 18 Championship in the Cobra Kai series was Xander King, of the Topanga karate school. While Xander King was a very politically correct character, he was a good sport in the series.

Still, Xander King could be used as a outside rival in the Cobra Kai series. Also, Xander is show to be more into acrobatic fighting, which is interesting from a chirography standpoint.

Second Two of Cobra Kai looks to be about a house divided. Or, more likely houses divided.

John Kreese is back and Johnny doesn’t actually own the rights to the Cobra Kai brand. In addition, while John is happy with what Johnny acomplished in season one, Johnny wants nothing to do with John after John tried to kill him, after Johnny last to Daniel thirty-four years ago.

John may tried to take Johnny’s dojo away from him.

Meanwhile, Daniel will likely have to deal with a rival Miyagi-Do Dojo Julie Pierce.

Given how Daniel abused the rules in season one, this fight might be more of a court matter than a sparring match.

Also, given the anti-political correctness strike this series has. While the original Cobra Kai Dojo excluded women, with Johnny accepted a few women because he needed the money, it is likely Julie’s Miyagi-Do only teaches women.

In addition, at the end of season one, Samantha, Daniel’s teenage daughter and former student, is shown to take an interest in restarting her training. But, given the events of season one, she might not want to train under her father, due to whom Robby, Daniel’s top student is, and her friendships in Cobra Kai.

So, she falls in with Ms. Pierce’s dojo, and while fighting a legal battle with Ms. Pierce, Daniel is worried that Ms. Pierce might corrupt his daughter, Samantha, the same way Terry Silver tried to do to him in Karate Kid III.

As this goes on, the legal battle and Daniel not be at the dealership is causing his family money and his wife, Amanda is worried and starts to pressure Daniel to walk away from his Dojo business. And Daniel refuses.

While Daniel would likely eventually went the legal battle with Ms. Pierce and win back his daughter, season Two might end with Daniel finding out his wife want a separation with him, though not a divorce. And the Cobra Kai series is red pill enough to try this.

Meanwhile, while Daniel is in the doghouse, Johnny’s life starts looking up. At least until, Dre comes onto the scene.

The Cobra Kai series could end up with Johnny and Daniel finally letting go of the past and joining forces. Sort of like Rocky and Apollo did in the Rocky film series. And if they wanted a new name for a dojo. The natural enemy of a cobra is the mongoose.

Meanwhile, outside of martial arts, there are other plotlines that offer interesting directions of the Cobra Kai series.

Miguel is Johnny’s first and top student. Miguel’s father whom his mother and grandmother run from Ecuador t to the U.S. while he was a baby is hinted to be drug lord. He might learn of Miguel. The irony might be that he might thank Johnny for turning his son into a man.

Also, during the later part of season one, Johnny gets into a fight with two bikers from Nevada, and he kicks there asses.

Before the fight, there was even a “Sons of Anarchy” comment during the lead up to the fight.

It is quite likely Johnny has made an enemy of a biker gang from Nevada.

Though, Johnny knows how to ride motorcycle, and Nevada has all sorts of fighting options for plot lines. There are formal fighting matches of different types in fighters in Las Vegas.

Actually, in season one, Johnny commented on Sumo Wrestlers. So, Johnny and maybe others might end up in a fight with some Sumo Wrestlers. That could be played for laughs, with a few E Honda-Street Fighter jokes.

Badass martial arts biker in Las Vegas. The plot writes itself.

It is hinted that Daniel’s cousin has mafia connections, during the series both Johnny and Daniel have likely p~~~ed him off, but only have he does something incredibly stupid.

The situation with Eli/Hawk and Demetri. By the end the first season of Cobra Kai, while all the Cobra Kai students have gone a little towards the “dark side”. Hawk went all in. Hawk went full dark side transformation.

Next to Miguel, Johnny’s first and top student, Hawk is the second most skilled student of Johnny’s Cobra Kai dojo.

Demetri decided to quit Cobra Kai on his first day. But, he is thinking about joining Cobra Kai again. Though, he will likely realize Cobra Kai has been corrupted, and he might become one of Daniel’s new students, in the dojo Daniel and Robby, Daniel’s current student, begin.

Demetri might train in the hopes of somehow using martial arts to somehow snap his friends, especially Hawk, out of what they have become. That pure martial arts teenage plot angst.

One of the first things U.S. entertain has not been about to achieve is to have a fleshed out American made martial arts series. There have been video games and movies. Both nothing to flesh out beyond a handful of characters.

I am unable to put into words how I truly feel in the Cobra Kai series. This series has the source material and quality production cast and crew to go the distance. This could be the next Breaking Bad series.

The Karate Kid franchise, using the Cobra Kai series would do this and expand. The series is a hit. This is like Breaking Bad, only instead of drugs, the series is about Martial Arts.

As MGTOW, I highly recommend seeing the Cobra Kai series. This is like a four and half hour long theatrical movie. This series will make you laugh and cry, sometimes at the same time.

Also, the first two Karate Kid movies are very good and worth watching. The rest of the films are okay.

I’ve heard it is very anti PC which surprises me given it is a Youtube series. I will be watching it soon. I was very cynical about it at first as most reboots/come backs etc suck in my opinion and I really only liked the original Karate Kid film anyway. But I keep hearing good things about this show.

Sort of on the same subject, that Will Smith version was absolute s~~~, I wanted his annoying kid to get his arse kicked.

The Cobra Kai series is very, very anti-PC.

There is no sex or people dying on screen in the series, but everything else is in the series.

    Yea.

Do not play a red pill, or 1980’s nostalgia drinking game, you will OD from alcohol poisoning within the first ten minutes of the first episode of Cobra Kai. Five minutes if you weigh less than two hundred pounds.

As other people have stated. Cobra Kai is the series we do not know we wanted, but we needed.

It is good to see the students become the teachers. And both Johnny and Daniel turn into badass teachers.

From this point of view, many people are point out this is how one revives a franchise, and not f~~~ things up, like what was done with Luuke (blue soy-milk) Skywalker in The Last Cuck.

Starting watching it last night. Pretty good so far. One little note it is a little inconsistent from how the original movie left off where Daniel and Johnny embrace each other after the final fight.

It seems they never got over one and another and are still haunted by it all!

I know. That has been pointed out. But then, what if that scene is shown how Johnny remembers is, not how it really happened. The next scene is has him waking up on the floor, after passing out drunk the previous night.

That fight scene from the first movie did use footage that was not in the final cut of the film.

It seems they never got over one and another and are still haunted by it all!

Exactly. That is the brilliance of the series.

The series is a wild ride that leaves you wanting more.

I only saw the first 2 episodes on YouTube. I’ll wait until it comes out on DVD and rent it from the library, since I won’t give YouTube my money.

It seems they never got over one and another and are still haunted by it all!

What was interesting to me was seeing that Daniel, who flew across the country and even the world, had experiences that Johnny never could have dreamed about, was still lost in that conflict from almost 40 years ago. Despite training under Miyagi, he didn’t absorb any of the philosophy.

It still bugs me how much of an “expert” Daniel’s daughter is on fighting technique when her own dad obviously hasn’t practiced any martial arts in at least half a decade, and her interests are primarily in chemistry and nerd culture. They actually make a point of pointing out that the last time Daniel and his daughter did any karate together was almost 10 years before Cobra Kai starts, when she was 8. She’s too good at karate for someone who hasn’t had a lesson in close to 10 years.

Despite training under Miyagi, he didn’t absorb any of the philosophy.

Actually, the series shows that with Miyagi gone for a number of years, Daniel lost his way. And it is clear that Daniel has PTSD over what happened in the first film.

A few of those events, such as being pushed down a hill, nearly killed him. So, this is justified.

But, notice that in all these years, neither Johnny, nor Daniel saw out each other to restart their rivalry. It was circumstances beyond their control that reignited their rivalry.

Also, Daniel losing his way allowed him to find his way. His wife even stated that Daniel was off and he needed to do something to find peace and move on.

The Cobra Kai series does their long term rivalry right. Neither want the rivalry, both seek peace, but they are not at peace as long as the other is doing something he disagrees with.

Though, a minor spoiler. Johnny and Daniel to get a chance to set down and talk, it is a very interesting scene(s).

Johnny and Daniel have some real chemistry which makes the rivalry even better.

In a lot of ways, Johnny and Daniel are the opposite of Sato and Miyagi. Both men want to move on, but they do not know how.

She’s too good at karate for someone who hasn’t had a lesson in close to 10 years.

She likely practiced, but she did so in private to stay fit, and she does not do this not regularly.

Keep in mind a lot of martial arts deals with muscle memory.

One point about this series. The most of the teenagers look like they have trained. For example, while Hawk is skinny, he has muscle tone.

Would be cool if they got Elisabeth Shue in to reprise the Ally role but I doubt that will happen. She has hit the wall now anyway but it could make for an interesting moment with Daniel and Johnny looking at her wondering why they bothered so much!

Cobra Kai is a very red pill series. While Johnny does encourage his students to date and have relationships, during the series, Johnny never attempts to have a romantic relationship with any woman. He does not even flirt with Miguel mother, Carmen, whom invited Johnny to have dinner with her family, which is her, Miguel and her mother, Rosa.

Johnny accepts the invitation and is polite, but he do not flirt with her. Though, Carmen looks good.

I love Elisabeth Shue, especially in the original Adventures in Babysitting, which has my favorite building, which made news here in Chicago last week when a scaffolding fell on someone. The former Associates Center.

Yes, it would be cool if she would return, but I don’t think she would. I don’t think she’s an important part in this series anymore.

She’s the only one that made a serious career out of the first film as well. You would be seeing Macchio or Zabka either if they were more successful.

She’s no longer an important part in the story but it would be fun all the same. The love interests in the other films are forgettable.

I’ve really enjoyed the show. As others have stated, there’s red pills out the wazoo. You get the hyperamous nature of females on display. Danny’s daughter catches onto alpha chad bad boy. Eventually she sees what a dirtbag the guy is and monkeybranches to Johnny’s protege after seeing him white knight for her as he kicks the s~~~ out of her ex badboy Chad (who later becomes badboy Chad himself, but only briefly as he falls into beta cuck status). In typical fashion, Danny’s slut of a daughter flirts with Johnny’s son because “gina tingles”, which is what got her attracted to Johnny’s protege in the first place. A war starts with Johnny’s son and his protege after she shows up with her gina tingles boytoy.

Seen 7 eps so far. Loving the mind f~~~ that Daniel is in for when he finds out who his protege is.

I love how Johnny has become the good guy as well. Although since seeing Zabka on How I met your mother years ago I have reconsidered Daniels white hat status.

He did stick his nose in on that beach in the original film when he should have just minded his own business.

The Cobra Kai series is all about reflections of the Karate Kid franchise. In a very good way.

For example, Miguel is a reflection of a young Daniel if he had trained under Cobra Kai.

Robby would be a reflection of a young Johnny if he had trained under Mr. Miyagi.

Samantha is a reflection of a young Ali if she had been taught Martial Arts as a child.

Daniel’s cousin, Louie, would be a reflection of Daniel if Daniel had never left New Jersey.

It is interesting how the stories are weaved in the Cobra Kai series to create interesting dynamics while being respectful to the source material.

I wonder what a successful adult Johnny would look like. A Johnny whose life did not crash and burn for over thirty years, and instead he became a success. Of all the Karate Kid characters, I would say that character would be an adult, Dre Parker.

I just started watching the series based on your review here. I’m impressed with the show. Its so rare for a show to blatantly destroy “Political Correctness” on a regular basis.

The story about Rivals re-igniting after 30 years is epic. This is a great show and I am recommending it for fans of the Karate Kid series and also people new to the franchise.
