Co-Directors Say There's A Strong Chance Marvel Will Feature LGBT Superheroes

Joe and Anthony Russo, co-directors of Captain America: Civil War — the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most politically-charged outing — say it’s “incumbent upon us as storytellers” to put lesbian, bi-sexual, gay, and transsexual superheroes in Marvel’s movies.
“I think the chances are strong,” Joe Russo told Collider when asked about the chances of an LBGT character entering the Marvel Universe. “I mean, it’s incumbent upon us as storytellers who are making mass-appeal movies to make mass-appeal movies, and to diversify as much as possible,”

In February, Marvel’s latest superhero, Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds, told Variety that he would support his character being gay, saying that it would be “nice” if his character had a male lover on the silver screen.

The problem they are going to run into, which they have run into with female characters, is that they are white hetero men writing these characters feelings. Women complain that female characters aren’t really female because men are writing them. The same will be said of lesbian, gay and trans characters. So they better hire a bunch of lesbians, gays and trans people if they want to get it right.

I remember they tried it with the hero Northstar back around the mid 90s. That s~~~ didn’t float far at all and they backpeddaled faster than that bear on the tiny bike in the circus. They haven’t done this yet. For all we know, they simply threw it out there to gauge public reaction. I personally think they wouldn’t let a main character have an LBGT lifestyle as they will know it will kill their profits. Some adults will back out and Parents will think twice about having their kids see it.

I personally don’t care as long as it fits the character and it’s not thrown in my face. Captain America does not fit as a gay character, but if you throw in a relatively obscure character it could work. As well, I don’t want to see heavy gay interaction or some political statement. Just have a male character say “I’m not into girls” or something like that. Done.

And if you think DC is any better, you’re kidding yourself. Watch the CW sometime, the emasculated virtually everyone.
