I grew up watching shows like Bewitched, Andy Griffith, Matlock, and Beverley Hillbillies. I consider myself a fan of these old shows.

That said, it cannot be escaped that both Griffith and Hillbillies were written as satire of what the Hollywood Left at the time thought of quaint country folks. See any of Granny, Jed, or Jethro’s antics. Despite the dubious, spurious premise of making fun of rednecks, both shows actually turned out to be quite excellent most of the time and knew how to have fun. Again, see anything involving Granny, Jethro, or (Griffith’s) Barney.

Both shows accidentally turned out to be exemplars of family values despite the blatant attempt to paint the world from which they are portrayed as slow, backwards, quaint, outmoded, and dull.

Hillbillies displays a widower trying to raise and take care of a family. Both shows actually portray the father as the head of the family and a solid member of the community. In both shows, the father figure is clever, temperate, and the window through which the viewer can project themselves into the television universe.

I miss shows that don’t openly ridicule the father figure and portray him as some horribly inept bumbling idiot that barely manages to tie his own shoes.

If you pay attention to Andy Griffith, the early shows, there is a touch of MGTOW.
Andy’s being chased by a number of women. He stays a step ahead tho.

Mayberry was happy and peaceful due to no marriages…

Sheriff Andrew Jackson “Andy” Taylor – widower
Deputy Bernard P. “Barney” Fife – single
Beatrice “Aunt Bee” Taylor – single
    Mechanic Gomer Pyle – single
    Mechanic Goober Pyle – single
School teacher Helen Crump – single
Aunt Bee’s friend Clara Edwards – widow
    Barber Floyd Lawson – single
Barney’s girlfriend Thelma Lou – single

The only married person was Otis Campbell….who coped with marriage by staying wickedly drunk…found sleeping in jail better than being with his wife.

I was born in 1982 and the only classic TV shows I like are:

    Flipper
    I Love Lucy
    The Lucy Show
    Three Stooges
    The Honeymooners
    Looney Tunes

This was back when shows and movies were made better than the PC, overly CGI crap they make today.

A lot of old TV shows and movies are cheap on DVD. Some collections of entire hundred episode TV series are ten to twenty dollars each. Go buy some of your favorites and binge watch them.

You gotta remember though that it was just T.V. It was imaginary. Andy Griffith himself was supposedly quite a dick in real life. They say that he was nothing like his ‘Andy Taylor’ character…

At one time A single Father raising kids was portrayed (in tv) as a hero. In real life he was s~~~ on.

    Courtship of Eddies Father
    Rifleman
    Bonanza
    Huckleberry hound
    Who’s the Boss
    Father Know’s best
    Family Affair
    Walking Dead
    Full house
    Sky King
    Fury
    Dudley Do-Right
    My Three Sons
    Quickdraw McGraw
    The Alvin Show
    Flipper
    Johnny Quest
    Gidget
    Batman
    Daktari
I left about 25 out cause you wouldn’t recognize them.

The only married person in Mayberry was the town drunk. He was drunk to escape nagging and preferred jail over his home. (sorry you already pointed that out.)

Agreed. Got all of The Rockford Files a while back for a reasonable price considering how many of them there were! Next up: X-Files oh, and The A-Team n’ Simon & Simon.

My station still runs The Andy Griffith Show on weekends. I guess I never noticed the only married character was the alcoholic.

I have some extended family members who go to all the Gunsmoke conventions.

I was an extra in the movies Flipper and Gentle Giant. My uncle knew the director and got my cousins, my sisters, and I in the movies.

A lot of those country themed shows were also axed because the networks wanted to start focusing on city themes with more decadent themes and characters.

I watched all those shows on re-runs as a kid in the late 70’s and 80’s and the other thing I noticed was how great all the women looked and how pleasant they seemed. Even the nasty female characters were nice!

In real life I’m quite sure Andy is a complete c~~~. I’m surprised Ron Howard turned out as generally amazing as he did. Seriously, the dude has saved more shows and movies than I can count just by having a consultant credit.
