This unusual winter lives on as we are threatened with tornadoes and severe thunderstorms. Yes, tornadoes in Chicago in February! Last week it was 60s and 70s, and now tornadoes, on top of the lack of snow and cold since before Christmas.
The town of Ottawa, which is about 67 miles southwest of where I live (about 120 miles southwest of Chicago), the downtown is badly damaged, and just had a confirmed death. I know the area, because nearby is Starved Rock State Park, where I like to go to hike on trails every summer. I feel for LaSalle County, because it’s one warning after another.
I didn’t know of any of this tornado threat until I turned off my Blu-ray player and tuned to ABC7 Chicago when they said that the whole state of Illinois is under a watch until 10 tonight. They have on it all since 4 PM.
The reason I put this topic in the Cool section is because it IS February, Chicago and instead of a snow blizzard, we’re being threatened with tornadoes. It’s so bizarre. It’s not entirely unheard of, because in January 2008 this area was hit by a major tornado, when just like lately, it got unusually warm and it’s going to get cold soon. So something has to give.
I used to study weather for over 25 years, because I wanted to be a weather forecaster when I was growing up. I will tell you that this has been a VERY weird winter this year; no snow since a week before Christmas, rain storms instead of snow, 60s/70s (record after record breaking temps), tornadoes, lightening. What Chicago has been getting this winter, you’d expect to see in April and May. I just sure hope that we have a very beastly hot summer like back in 2012 when it was over 90 every day that summer.

You can have a tornado any time of year. Summer or winter.

I’ve been watching the radar all night. What hit Chicago is now morphing and moving on to my neck of the woods. Should see the first lightning within the hour.
Glad I didn’t ride my bike to work tonight.
Have you ever been to the caves near Ottawa? (or mines)
Anonymous1We had hail up by the town that rhythms with toilet.

No, but I’ve been to Starved Rock and Mathessian Park which is also nearby. It has about a dozen canyons with waterfalls.

True, but you almost never hear about tornadoes in Chicago in the winter, because you’re suppose to expect snow and blizzards and sub-zero cold. Then again, this has been a strange winter this year.

Anonymous42Tornadoes in Chicago, go to Canada, go to Canada, leave New England alone! Or go South to New Jersey just leave New England alone! We had our F-4 and Irene only two years apart! New Jersey needs another lump not us!
Anonymous54Now your liven the life of us Southerners!!
When theyer near in the summer, they sky turns a greenish yellow. It gives you a sickly creepy feeling. And I love it!!!Isn’t Obama back in Chicago right now?
