Carles Puigdemont told a packed news conference he would return home “immediately” if a fair judicial process were guaranteed in Spain. He dismissed speculation he would seek political asylum in the Belgian capital.

He dismissed speculation he would seek political asylum in the Belgian capital.

Granting him asylum and allowing him to set up a government in exile would be a diplomatic blunder of the first order.

Given that its purpose would effectively be to overthrow the elected government of Spain, such a gesture would be a first step on the road to war.

Can’t declare independence without a strong army and with a leader in exile.
This is turning into a clusterf~~~. All it’s gonna do is create another civil war and the Catalans defending their territory will be labeled terrorists.

He should’ve stayed with his ship. If Spain were to prosecute him he could play the martyr role and gain support internationally for his independence cause. But he’s a modern mangina politician, so he scuttles off like the coward he is.

Civil Wars are based around this. A region wants to break away, and the country/empire it is part of says it can’t, so they fight it out. If the region wins, it is a war of independence. If they lose, it is a civil war. That is how it works. You see this with the United States. It had a war of independence and a civil war.
