Catalonia plots next move as Spain attempts to seize power

BARCELONA, Spain — A pro-independence party in the Spanish region of Catalonia is calling for “mass civil disobedience.” They are upset about the Spanish government’s unprecedented decision and attempt to take over Catalonia’s government.

The political crisis has escalated to the point that Spain’s central government is, in essence, saying “we’ll take over now” as they seek to impose direct rule in Catalonia, CBS News correspondent Seth Doane reports. Some leaders in Catalonia are plotting their next move.

Those favoring independence made it clear what they thought about direct rule by Madrid.

“They just want to crush us down. We’ve got our dignity. We’ve got our dignity. We’ve fought for it for years,” one woman at Saturday’s demonstration said.

Around 450,000 people filled Baracelona streets Saturday in protest.

protests and strikes are a waste of time—will accomplish nothing. Freedom must be fought/bled for and earned. It is never a gift or reward for merely inconveniencing the powerful with strikes etc.

If they want liberty they need to arm themselves, declare their independence and be prepared to defend it. IT really is that simple.

Mass arson would work. Completely incinerate Madrid.

If I was a Catalan, and I was a fence-sitter or against independence, Spain’s reaction is what it would take to make me flip to pro-independence.

Unless the Catalonians are armed, this is going to be a very short succession movement.

If an independence group really wanted to cause chaos in a city, set multiple fires with gasoline and then use vehicles to ram the fire hydrants to make them unusable.

The Catalans are going to have to show how serious they are and the Spanish government will never accept an independent Catalonia so it will inevitably lead to civil war.
Other countries in Europe are in the same dilemma, with independent mayors refusing to abide by their government’s decisions and whole regions wanting to self-govern.
Brexit has shown that it was possible to stand against the follies of those in Brussels and many Europeans now know that the grand Europe experiment is an utter failure and that it’s time to cut our losses and go back to sovereign countries with protected borders and sensible immigration policies.
I agreed with Brexit and I agree with the Independence of Catalonia.

Absolutely right. My students keep trying to convince me that the corrupt and tyrannical regimes in western Europe will eventually be removed democratically. But I’ve been saying the same thing for the past several years: either they obey their tyrants, or they make them bleed. No middle course available.

If Catalonia gets independence, the E.U. is over. I loathe the E.U. & Herr Merkel. Hungary and Italy aren’t far off either. Also the Czechs just voted in a right winger. The situation is looking good!
