I have a bit of trouble career wise. Early 20’s. Aspiring musician and getting really good at it.
Music won’t make me an income for quite awhile so I don’t know what I should do now. Someone told me to get a tech job like a Computer Security job until I can make a living off of my music since I love computers but I’ve been in and out of school. My parents don’t trust that I’ll stick with one program.
Don’t know what to do. I’m working some part time job at a music studio now but I barely make anything.
I’m guessing I should just man up and go for that Network Security job, make some good money while pursuing music as a side passion and leave it at that?
What do some of you, older, men think about this? Any man can answer but ideally one who has a career or career experience.
Yeah get the real job, but only that kind of job that can allow you to spend all your free time productively helping your music. Net sec. might be the thing for you, but will it stress you out and will you loose your patience for music? Might not be the best idea. IMO find something that you can do that doesn’t pull too many resources from your noggin but pays the bills, and then you can devote your best for your music. God spede.
I also make music, and while I am somewhat successful, there are very few people who can make a living off of music alone. Truth be told, go with the good paying job, and do music as a hobby or side thing. If nothing else, you can do music full time once you retire, and then it get’s really interesting.
But, if you’re anything like me, you create music because you like to and it just sort of happens whether you get paid or not. Hopefully you can be successful and live off your music, but until then, I’d go with he steady job.
Feminism is a movement where opinions are presented as facts and emotions are presented as evidence.
An older friend in his 40’s told me to do the same thing. Get a real job and spend the rest of your time with your music. Until your music makes enough money to live off of, keep the real job.
Well figure it like this. You have to earn the money, so find out the most effective way you can do that. If you can do that with music, go for it. If not, well scrimping and saving and just scraping by with a part time job at a studio will only get you so far.
You’re going to need the extra money for expenses in your music, but you also need to be able to live a life outside of music to draw a pool for your creativity. That requires cash, but it’s no good to put away your passion and work solidly in different industry that drains you. Give computer security a go. If it doesn’t work, change. Whatever you do, keep making your music.

I both play drums and do computer security. Security position require more outside of the office work and study time, certs and experience, and you may end up not even liking it. If youve already got a knack for computer work, start on a helpdesk somewhere with a varied client base and lots of different technologies and see what you like doing vs what you are good at doing. The best thing about helpdesk is that even though most helpdesks are meat grinders, you leave the stress and bulls~~~ at your desk when you leave and you can focus on your music.

I plan on having my own White Hat Hacking/Cybersecurity Consulting business where I’m in control. Like contract work where I go do a job for someone, and come back home.

Thats a great idea, its a helluva lot of work though. They want you certified at that level usually. A lot of musicians I know seem to be into Sharepoint, they go out to customers and do their intranet company info pages. Storage companies that specialize just in storage and cloud based backups seem to have a nice thing going as well.
