I’m a white, heterosexual Canadian man. Obviously, our history is significantly different from America. I read an article today about workers being fired for “A racially insensitive menu for a Black History Month meal at New York University”. This has “led to a company apology and workers being fired”.

I’m not intentionally being ignorant here…but what is the deal here? They served bbq and a “watermelon flavoured drink”. This is racist for some reason. I’ve heard this before, but I have no clue why this is the case.

Is this just a stereotype, like saying asians are good at math, which some people find offensive? Or, is there a deeper history at play here? Is this connected to the shameful history of slavery in some way?

I don’t know. It sounds like a delicious meal to me.

If the restaurant had been owned by blacks no one would have said a word. I actually think it’s pretty funny, and I know a few blacks that would roll their eyes at this, too.
