So, right now I haven’t had any caffeine in 24 hours. I am sleepy.

It’s evening, and I got up at 10, and with delayed sleep phase syndrome, I usually have more energy than a toddler with a puppy. Yet, now I’m just craving a nap.

My nose is runny and stuffy and my eyes are prone to watering. I feel like I keep forgetting to breath. Motivation is entirely sapped. I just don’t want to do anything but sleep.

I have absolutely no headaches at all.

I’ve done this before and what I experience was a massive calmness, zero anxiety at all, low blood pressure, sharp focus, super crazy memory. I would be unable to not pay attention to absolutely everything. Should someone whisper while in crowd, I’ll hear it and notice, along with all the rest of the commotion (this is more hyperbole than truth).

I don’t think I’m moody, snappy, or irritable. A few hours ago I had a conversation with my boss, his boss, and the HR person about my hour reports. It was inconvenient and I have been doing everything right but they still had a problem. Didn’t bother me at all, I just explained it, gave them what they asked, and it was just business as usual.

The amazing thing is no headaches at all. Normally my head would be pounding (the only reason why I get headaches is chemical like caffeine withdrawal or hangover).

I hope this place doesn’t catch on fire because I’m not going to move at all.

I’m drinking coffee right now, I will be having 4 cups worth.

    That’s right 4 over-scoops, 2 big cups.

You can't reason with unreasonable, there; women, figured out, there is nothing to reason.

Why…. Coffeee is a blessing – why quit!? It keeps you alert, sharp, wakes you up in the morning, helps curb your appetite so you don’t overeat and even has been shown in some studies to prevent against Liver Cirrhosis!

I probably drink double that a day. I know someone who drinks an entire 12 cup pot a day and is very healthy. As long as you don’t personally have a caffeine sensitivity, the sky is the limit in my opinion/

That’s just to start my day, those 4 cups.

    8-10 a day I guess.

I take it black, not goin’ back.

Pascal:  I’ve researched caffeine, tested caffeine on myself, and avoided caffeine for months all in an attempt to understand how the drug can help me or hurt me.  Also, I’m writing about caffeine as a drug and not coffee specifically.  This is what I’ve experienced and learned so far:

    1.  Mentally:  Too much (say 200-400mgs = 2 to 4 cups of coffee) decreases my concentration, makes me irritable and short with folks, makes my body move faster that my mind so mistakes are made, makes me rude and mildly psychotic and a bit fidgety.  Sometimes it makes me mildly euphoric but short tempered.  There’s a pretty good chance for an altercation.  Caffeine is a stimulant to the central nervous system.  Incidences of “road rage” do not surprise me.  Caffeine is an irritant and it p~~~es a lot of people off.  I imagine Rush Limbaugh drinks a whole pot before he goes nuts on the radio.  I do get more work done.

    2.  Physically:  Too much raises my blood pressure by about 15 points, increases my heart rate, makes me breathe faster and gives me the shakes.  I also go to bed later, sleep less soundly, wake-up more tired and require MORE caffeine to carry me though the next day.  Caffeine is also an irritant to the intestines and may increase bowel movements more that what is normal or call for them at inopportune times.  If you are an endurance athlete caffeine reduces fatigue which is why, after certain levels in the blood, it is banned in the Olympic Games.  It will improve your performance.  Caffeine is a diuretic…you may have to p~~~ all the time causing mild dehydration depending on the situation.  I do get more work done.

    3. No Caffeine:  I function a little less than an average human, sleep as though I’m dead, hardly get meaningful work done while at work, don’t really care to do much other than eat, sleep and bathe, I’m more patient with folks in traffic and in general, breathe easier, I’m WAY more calm, rarely ever get in altercations, and kind of float through life without much drive, ambition or care.  Reduced urgency to p~~~ is a nice bonus and my bowel movements can be timed down to the second.  You cannot identify caffeinerage until you see it from the other side.  Caffeine-free gives you a perspective on life you never had.  Hard to explain.  I don’t get s~~~ done.

Overall:  Caffeine is a mixed bag.  Too little and it doesn’t “work.”  To much and bad s~~~ can happen.  I might also add that caffeine doesn’t “give you energy.”  All the energy you have comes from YOUR cells…caffeine just increases the rate at which energy is taken from your cells.  What that means for your cells over the long term I do not know.  Caffeine is not addictive…your body develops a tolerance.  Scientifically/physically, it takes your body about 20 days for your brain not to look for caffeine anymore.  Caffeine is produced and used by plants for pest control.  It is poison to insects.

My recommendation, for what it’s worth: If you can live your life without it, you’re a lucky bastard.  If you can’t, take the least amount of caffeine (in the morning only) that you can get by with to do what you need to do.  Replacing your caffeine appetite with a sugary drink addiction is another topic altogether.  Good luck with your experiment.

I see it as an “everything in moderation” principle. It’s like fast food: Once a month or so when you’re really pressed for time won’t hurt you at all, but you have people who abuse it by only eating fast food multiple times a day. Caffeine, here and there, can be great for situations you need to be alert for, but it’s a downward spiral to take it all the time. I usually get about 100 mgs a day as a pre-workout and jump off every 4-6 weeks or so.

Thanks for the information. I work in computers so caffeine is also a cultural thing; it’s a computer thing to drink lot’s of caffeine. I now have only small amounts of caffeine from tea which I do have. It’s nice to have a warm beverage to sip. It’s been almost a week since my last cup of Java.

I’m not longer so lethargic. I was a total zombie just begging for sleep, and sleep I did, waking up with my head spinning around like the top in Inception. I had to wait about 20 minutes to learn the difference between reality and sleep again, until I became coherent and could function. It was like I got my CPAP machine for the first time (I have sleep apnea).

I suffered serious motivation problems. I didn’t want to do anything for a few days. It helped to take naps, which I never do. I’m feeling a lot better while off of the stuff. I’ll try to last 20 days to see if that helps but I won’t cut out the tea because I love tea. I am more moody with caffeine. It’s known to cause anxiety and psychiatric issues. Many issues can be cured with the removal of caffeine. My mood went way down during withdrawal. However, I’m calmer.

My memory is sharper now. I have random recalls from time to time.

I went from  5+ cups of coffee a day to zero overnight (I do not recommend doing that, it is entirely f~~~ing dangerous and stupid).  I had the same withdrawal.  The best way I could explain it is if you stayed up and partied all night and went straight to work the next day buzzed.  That lethargic/buzzed feeling lasted for about 5 days.  NO FUN.  None.   For those that don’t think caffeine is a drug, try doing without it.

The reason I’m replying is that I’ve lived the other side for months.  After that initial week of feeling like TOTAL S~~~, things did get a lot better.  You start to feel normal again and you notice small mental improvements in your life which is kinda cool.  But, like any massive changed to diet…quitting alcohol, sugar, smoking, s~~~-food…you initial feel better, then your body wants to find its equilibrium again.  Maybe you ARE better, but you just get used to your new reality and feel the same…just without the side effects.

    Other thoughts:
It’s hard to over estimate the important roll that coffee/tea place on our social lives.  If you quit coffee/tea, you will be an outsider.  It’s weird.
See that coffee/tea stain on your cup?  That’s what happens to your teeth too.  A dentist visit every 6 months can get most stains off.
How many coffee drinks can you afford per day at $4 plus tip? That is a damn good retirement over 50 years.
It’s great waking up knowing I won’t get a headache if I don’t have time to find coffee.
My kitchen was full of coffee apparatuses: small/big coffee makers & filters, Melita small/big, sugar sugar sugar, creamer, fresh-special coffee, etc.
In the morning, I see everyone walking with a cup of coffee like some great disabled population. I like having two f~~~ing hands again.

Every population looks for an edge through substances, even destructive ones like cocaine and meth. Got to be careful.
