I needed new tires. It has started to balloon. And usually, I just go to the a tire store. This time, I went online. TO where? WALMART.com.For the price of 2 used tires that have seen better days, ($50 bucks each + Mount and balance) I can get them NEW! I tipped the guy and left.
Now I AM a tire snob. But I’m no longer doing 107+ MPH jaunts on the freeways these days. Or even the regular 85 Mph of the California Highway speed of the past. I don’t even go much further then 20 miles out these days if ever. So? I took a look at what tires I could get on line.
How about $39.00 Yup. $39.00! GOt 4 of them, and FREE SHIPPING! HOLY CRAP! TOtal cost was $157.00!
For the PRICE, you get all that below:
*Treadwear Warranty: 45,000 miles
*Tire Type: Car/Minivan – All Season
*Sidewall: Black Sidewall
*Speed Rating: V
*Load Index: 92With USED? You get TINDER Date. That means, you don’t know WHAT the hell you are getting if you get used. If you don’t want a used women? then why pay more for used tires when you can get NEW ONES for HALF THE COST?
Experience be damned. This is not one of those things you want to Buy USED.
So not only are they going to be shipped to my door, but I will have to go to a tire shop to have them mounted and balanced. I need to get an alignment done anyways.
So EVEN with that cost, I STILL WIN OUT. So I have to ask, HOW is this Possible? This is the GLORY of Economics. Who is going to BUY tires online and have them shipped to their home? Further still, who buys tires in ADVANCE? They usually buy them when everyone needs them OR when Winter is coming.
Most of the time it’s an emergency purchase. So you pay those prices up front.
I was about to buy some s~~~ snow tire to put on my van for $50 bucks. BUT I LEARNED TO SAY NO!.
I don’t know about you, but I have a hard time saying no when a store does not have what I want. This is part of the reason why I prefer to shop online. I was about to just pay for the tire and then just go home and scope out a set when I had time. I would have just wasted almost $80 dollars. And that would have been the tire disposal fee, mount and Balance of a tire that there would be NO way for me to get a match for.
Now I have 4 new tires coming to my FRONT DOOR. And all cuz I learned to SAY NO. And LOOK for a BETTER DEAL.
It’s almost like a Hypergamy but with tires!
Winter is coming and I don’t like having anything tires that like to Hydroplane. So, this works out great.
The moral is, FIND and SPEND the time to SEARCH for a GOOD DEAL. And KNOW when to buy. I missed out on a great deal 4 months ago at $32 bucks a tire. Now these come out, and MAN, am I glad I pulled the trigger on these.
What smart purchases have you made? And what are YOU glad you did not buy?

A few months ago, I had some tires that were going bald. One kept leaking air. I got desperate and went to a used tire store. I got some really cheap tires. One blew out on the freeway, so I decided to spend a lot of money on a new tire. I just didn’t feel like complaining at the used tire store, and possibly getting them replaced by something worse.
I like the idea of shopping for the best price. I live in an apartment, so getting tires delivered here isn’t convenient. If I get a package on my doorstep, it might get stolen. Some apartment complexes let you pick up a package at their front offices, but I can’t afford to live in those kind of places yet.

I saw that I could put an end to your outrages by pronouncing a single word in my mind. I pronounced it. The word was ‘No.’" (Atlas Shrugged)

The tire size that I need is very hard to find, especially in a mud-n-snow tire (P215 75R14). I buy in advance if/when I can find them…
Speaking of tires… I enjoy visiting my local, independent tire shop (as much as a person can enjoy such a thing). There’s no waiting room as such; just a couple benches along the wall in the very old (1930s) shop itself. Needless to say, you rarely see anyone but men waiting. No coffee, television, or doughnuts. The office features decades-old pinup calendars. If they want to point something out to you, they just have you come over and look (none of this “insurance regulations — no customers in shop” crap). They actually torque your lugnuts with a torque wrench and they charge very little for labor, especially if you pay cash.
Similarly, there’s ONE mechanic I trust for work I can’t or don’t want to do myself. He’s careful and honest, and he doesn’t mind if I stop by once in a while to get his advice on things (I always offer to pay for his time; sometimes he accepts a little cash, sometimes not).
I still need to find a good auto electric shop to rebuild a starter. That’ll probably mean a trip to the nearest “big” town.

You need a starter for what application? I’ve purchased ‘Wilson’ rebuilt starters for many years and I’ve had very good luck with them…

Is it a DENSO starter? THOSE THINGS ARE EASY!! Hardest part is getting to it. After that, the rebuild takes less then 10 min. The only thing that goes wrong on those is the COntacts for the solenoid.
If you want to be sure you got the BEST quality stuff?
Nations Electric pretty much is my go to for people doing it their first time. Their stuff is always on spec.
In fact, most of the time, you don’t even need to take it out. Most of the time the Plunger is fine. Its just the Copper contacts. And those can be as little as $2.00.
If I can do it? Dude,,, ANYONE CAN! 🙂

I don’t believe I’ve ever bought used tires. I was buying Cooper tires for a long time, but they don’t even give you 50,000 miles and I had to buy new tires every two years.
This last time I bought Michelin tires. Cost me nearly a thousand dollars for a full set, but I’ve been rotating them as recommended and they’ve been holding up pretty well. We’ll see how many miles I get out of them.

http://www.wilsonautoelectric.com/StartersThanks for the link! I’ll check that out. I’ve had bad luck in general with rebuilds from chain stores, so that has put me off buying “pre-rebuilt” parts a bit unless I know the work was done by a reputable rebuilder (factory-rebuilt Denso parts, for instance, have been as good as new for me). This is for an older Ford.

If I can do it? Dude,,, ANYONE CAN!Denso starters and alternators are pretty much bulletproof, except for certain wear parts. I put a factory-rebuilt Denso alternator in my Toyota, and that thing looked and works like new. If you didn’t know it was a rebuild, you wouldn’t be able to tell (unlike the crap house brands they sell at the chain stores). The starter in question is for an older Ford, and it still engages and works well — but it drags as it disengages in colder weather. I might throw a cheap imported replacement on there so I can rebuild the old one without any time pressure and then keep the cheapie as a spare. Fortunately, it’s very easy to access the starter on the Ford (unlike on the Toyota, where it’s buried between the two heads and it takes about 6 hours to replace).

The place I go to now is similar and just as old. Tiny little office area with no air conditioning, but the old guy that owns the place does always have a bucket of cheap chewing gum and a bucket of Tootsie Pop suckers. Same deal with going into the shop. As long as you stay outta’ their way, they don’t care. The workers sometimes like to shoot the schit with you anyway.
That place is one of the oldest buildings and businesses in town. On the walls they have many old photographs of the business dating way back to when they first opened. They still come out and pump gas for you even. I don’t know any other place that still does that.

I never buy used tires period.
$1300.00 CDN is what I paid for 5 new tires. Mud/Snow All Terrain, handles extremely well on ice and cross country as well
Mounted, balanced, included enviro fee, taxes, etc.
The added bonus is the type of tires I run actually lower my insurance premiums, and they last me 3 years at minimum. You get what you pay for.
There was a time in my life when I gave a fuck. Now you have to pay ME for it
This is for an older Ford.
All of my vehicles are ‘older Fords’. One of my Ford tractors is nearly eighty years old and it has on it a ‘rebuild’ Wilson starter…
I never skimp on tyres or brakes. That’s one cheat that could be your last.
*Treadwear Warranty: 45,000 miles
That’s not bad for a cheap pair of tires.
Most cheap Ho’s have far more c~~~ miles…

I LEARNED my lesson well with CHEAP brake pads. NEVER Buying them again.

This is where I never luck out. The Miles. I bought a Brand new pair of American made tires in California. In less than 7 months, they were already at the tread wear line.
That reminds me, I need to get an extra pair of snow tire chains before they start to go up in price.
So Autolight, when are you going to show us your Rigs man?

I’m not too inclined to post pics of personal property online. I have a couple of old tractors. I have a few old cars and trucks. They’re all beaters really. Nothing particularly fascinating…
