Anonymous43I am teaching this type of math called hands on equations
This is a system of lessons designed to be a better way to learn algebra.

Many of my students can do simple algebra already, while some struggle with 5x asking me 5 times whatI hate this s~~~. The kids hate it. I find these little blue f~~~ers all over the room. I have had a week’s worth of training from three consultants. I want to teach the kids how to solve with an algorithm, mostly because you wont always have an orange mat, 8 blue pawns and 4 red cubes.
It is f~~~ed up how they try to teach these kids simple math now a days. I was visiting with my niece last weekend, she is in the third grade. They we trying to show me something about putting your fingers together to get the answers for multiplication like 7×6. And her fingers show the answer. I’m just like really. Why not just do it old school and embed it in their brain that 7×6 is 42.

Education is BIG BUSINESS. These consultants which are often retired administrators, superintendents, principals etc. are bringing down 80% of their previous salary, and now they travel around the country pushing these f~~~ed up systems all the while reaping more tax dollars to fill their pockets. This not to mention the real big money that is being sucked up by the companies pushing these f~~~ed up educational products. It’s all about the dollar, nothing to do with the kids or the poor teachers that have to try and implement this garbage. As usual, follow the money.

No wonder kids end up hating math. Its all about how you’re taught it.
I have discovered a truly remarkable list of reasons why women are not necessary for a happy life, but alas this margin is too small to contain it.

You won’t like this but I watched the video with the sound off and thought it was a very intuitive way of learning algebra – just do the same thing to both sides until you’re down to one of the blue pawns on one side and a number on the other. I’ll try a homemade version with my daughter.
I too watched the video, and thought that it was gimmicky at best. It may work wonders for some as it might for your daughter, but I don’t see how much better it will work for the “masses”‘ as compared to the “traditional” process. Hopefully, our OP will shed some light on the results he is having with his class.
I have issues when school systems “attempt” to teach multiple different ways in teaching basic concepts. For example, when my kid comes home, and is frustrated because they are trying to learn a “new” way to subtract that doesn’t involve stacking the numbers. Of course, this is an additional subtraction method, and stacking will come next. Please, why are we trying to invent the wheel in schools, when most school systems have enough challenges trying to get the masses to learn and use one method ?
I get the whole concept that in math there are multiple different ways to solve many problems, but wouldn’t all of this best be presented with accelerated students that can pick it up quickly, and benefit from the additional exposure ? It seems like we’re trying to educate each child as if they were all at an accelerated level in each course while in the process leaving the majority not learning the basics. The educational system as well as the state and federal educational standards seem to completely ignore the bell curve of human intelligence. By doing this, the education system is putting many of these children in a position where they will continue to fall behind more and more every year. At least that’s my impression.
