Greetings boys, I’ve been away for a while but I’m back now.

I have a little tradition where I build a new PC every 5 years. It’s that time again, and this time I decided to go pretty big to celebrate recently moving out on my own to a condo. In case anyone is interested, here are the specs:

    I7-8700k 3.7 GHz
    Kraken X62 AIO
    16GB DDR4 3200MHz
    8GB GTX SC 1080
    Windows 10
    Samsung SSD Drive
    34inch Ultra Wide Monitor

I’ll be doing some gaming here and there but mostly browsing and unwinding. The reason I made this topic was because this is 1 of the few places I can go for TRUE answers from people who know their s~~~. I want to use totally cuck-free programs, avoid being tracked as much as possible, and generally just have an awesome blazing-fast PC experience with no bloatware. I figured some of you guys might know some good tips/programs to download as soon as I boot the PC up later this month.

What are some do’s and dont’s that I should keep in mind for windows 10 (hear it’s a privacy nightmare) and some must-have programs? What browser and search engine to use? Thanks boys

I enjoy building and fixing PCs and installing software/hardware. I’d do it as a job if there were any openings nearby.

Of course window 10 is a privacy nightmare. But do you know you can install window 7 on new PC even though Microsoft made a underhand deal with Intel and AMD to force people to Window 10?

    https://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/3008609/theres-a-patch-to-reinstate-windows-7-81-on-kaby-lake-cpus

    The Github is here

Given that games still support Window 7 I think you can still use window 7 and don’t experience the hassle of window 10.

If you still want to use window 10, here is a list of things you need to do to remove spyware.

If you think that is too much hassle then you have to install some tool

Install what you use. Don’t install what you don’t use.

All the browsers have privacy addons you can get, Ghostery and script monkey and ad blockers, use the one you like best.

If I may suggest, install additionally M.2 form factor PCIE SSD, for example

For a number of tasks, it may boost PC performance better than good memory or even processor 🙂 .
Then install Windows 7/10 on one sdd and Ubuntu on the other…
Then go OpenSource for all your needs. If all the professional programmers didn’t find any hidden bots in sorce codes, it’s as clean as it gets.
For further, you’d better explain in more details what you need.

Nerd – I already knew about f.lux and it is a great tool. Great suggestion.

Gnostic – Unfortunately I am going with a Windows 10 64-bit build. I want my PC to be relatively future proof in the coming years, and Win7 is a bit too dated I feel at this point. I am certainly going to take advantage of those lists you provided though.

Vlad – I actually did buy an NVMe SSD! I was going to install Windows 10 onto it. I’m not sure how to use Ubuntu sadly. Maybe I can buy a secondary HDD or something and install Ubuntu onto it? And whenever I chose, I would boot the computer either in Windows 10 or Ubuntu (I’m assuming I would decide this in the BIOS)?

Thanks a lot fellas. I’m thinking of using duckduckgo and Firefox with ghostery and privacy badger and disconnect add-ons. Although I’ve heard of a browser called “Brave”. Anyone familiar with it?

The process of installing Ubuntu alongside Windows 10 is quite simple, though maybe lengthy
    https://www.wikihow.com/Dual-Boot-Windows-10-and-Ubuntu-16.04
I use windows 10 for gaming and non-serious browsing(viruses can gobble that for all i care, i just restore from reserve copy) and Ubuntu for everything else.
As for me Ubuntu is quite simple and staightforward to use, simpler than windows 10, though I might be biased.
I use additional SSD for other OS. If you wanna go “full paranoia” use hot swap system like
    https://www.amazon.com/Kingwin-Performance-Tray-Less-Backplane-Enclosure/dp/B00126U0VA
And disconnect OS disk with info you want to keep secret while on Internet :).
Brave is good idea, performance is solid at first glance, but we’ll see how it works in the long run :).

If you have the skill I’d used a minimalistic Linux kernel. Then just start adding things beyond that. Then install qemu with a gpu pass through to the virtual machine on a stripped down windows 10 system.

    Depends,
I run 1 freeware antivir and a firewall.
    Then malwarebytes.

    Thats in terms of security.
I dont know if you care much but if you have some spare cash: MONITOR CALIBRATOR.
The biggest image quality improvement I ever got was that. I use a simple X-Rite i1display PRO (around 200 bucks?) and my LED Monitor managed to be at the same color quality as my plasma TV (black levels are not as good but still).

Best part is you can use it on multiple PCs and have different profiles AND, for the PC it is consonantly connected, it regulates monitor brightness to keep a constant luminosity during different light hours.

If you don’t want to be tracked, and want to game, well, you will have to do some different things. I would suggest you to use Linux, and play on a virtual machine with windows.

It may sound crazy but it work, and work pretty well. Another good thing is, you don’t have to format or reinstall windows ever, you just save your file after a clean install (your virtual machine disk), when you need a reset, just copy that file, and you are ready to go.

I’ve to separated machines, one I keep for playing offline games, and the other, for online games. Why ? I don’t want any internet connection while playing offline, it means you can virtually remove the network card from the virtual machine, and you are “safe” (in a certain degree) that this machine won’t communicate with the internet.

About performance, well, you won’t feel a thing, since you will pass your video card to the VM using VFIO, it will be like it is running natively. Also if you want, you can allocate a whole physical disk for the machine, so, you will have even better disk performance. When I started gaming like this, I though “I will prepare a disk for that, but first, I will test using a file”, and even it running in a file, over an encrypted filesystem, it worked fast as hell !

So the idea is basically threat your windows machine as an snes emulator, but for windows games.

Weeeeeell, here we have recent big NOPE to “safety” of all virtual machines: https://meltdownattack.com/

Basically, those exploits are able to invalidate all virtual machines sandboxind.

For all trojans and viruses using those techniques all “protected mode” execution checks fail and we’re back to 80286-level execution control for all safety and security purposes.

    Hardware isolation is the way.

I usually partition my disk and dual boot Win 7 (f~~~ Win 10) and Unix OpenBSD.

You won’t regret installing OpenBSD – most secure OS ever!
