I used to take them 6 years ago and they did absolutely f~~~ all for me. I felt NOTHING, saw no gains what so ever, and they just did nothing for me. So I stopped buying them, whey protein, creatine etc, and just stuck to a strict diet to achieve bulk and ate a f~~~ load of chicken lol. This was all I ever needed in reality.

All these pre work out drinks are just packed with caffeine, and thats the only thing that is active in those rip off powders. You might as well knock back a red bull.

I think they are just placebos.

Makes me laugh Arnie has his own supplements for sale now, and all the mugs buying them hoping to be like their idol.

This dude ate an impeccable diet back in the day, trained like a psycho, and injected anabolic steroids which hes very quiet about.

What say you gents? Do you buy any supplements? If so what do you take and has it helped you or made a pointless dent in your finances?

This is quite a cool read as well,m no idea who this dude is tho lol:

    Depends.

I use a good Whey Isolate that has no spiking and a

pure Creatine Monohydrate and see good gains.

Pre work outs are BS though, a cup of coffee is all you should need to feel ‘motivated’

Good diet and rest are important too as is research

Do your home work or you’ll get schooled!

Do you think you’d get the same gains tho if you ditched the whey and creatine?

Back in my day the only stuff we had was whey or egg white protein shakes. Only thing they were good for was a protein supplement during lunch when I could not prepare my own food. God the number of hard-boiled egg whites and chicken breasts I ate back then… I was a one man chicken Armageddon.
Actually my best gains were from putting negative reps into my circuit and getting good rest. Lot of guys I knew were blowing right by me but I could not stand going on the needle.

It is by caffeine alone I set my mind in motion, it is by the beans of Java that thoughts acquire speed, the hands acquire shaking, the shaking becomes a warning; it is by caffeine alone I set my mind in motion.

If you’re eating lots of meat of course whey supplements are useless. Your body is just p~~~ing out the excess proteins.

Just because you didn’t feel anything doesn’t make it so. Try not to fall into the anicdotal type rationalizing.

With any market there is going to be BS somehow / someway. If you want answers you have to do the leg work to get a better understanding of what’s being sold. Looking at a wall of product and haphazardly picking something isn’t going to give you much insight.

I’ve taken various pre workouts and they all have different reactions even though providing the same marketed effects.

As with anything though all in moderation. You’re not going to need a liver transplant from casual use.

I use a good Whey Isolate

That’s all I use. And quite infrequently. And one of those regular sized containers last me like 6 months.

With school and work and life – it is lot easier to stay lean than to bulk up and then be under 10% fat.

By the way, whey also has health benefits besides building muscle. The one obtained through micro-filtration contains lots of antibodies and also the building blocks needed by the immune system to create more antibodies and other defenses. I take it when I get a bad cold. I managed to cure colds in less than 24 hours with a heavy dose of whey and sleep; normally I find it hard to eat any solid food anyways, so I can’t get proteins otherwise. The nutrients from whey are absorbed immediately with almost no effort required from the digestive system, so it helps the immune system get what it needs right away.

https://theses.lib.vt.edu/theses/available/etd-03032004-002411/unrestricted/Dissertation.pdf — This one is pretty technical, but the conclusion is clearly stated:

Supplementation with WPI did not enhance GSH status or exercise performance in trained cyclists, during weight maintenance or energy restriction. Following exercise, WPI is associated with greater lymphocyte proliferation of PBMCs which may help maintain an athlete’s health during heavy training or competition.

Interestingly he found that it did not help with cycling performance, but it significantly boosted the immune system and also accelerated the “cleanup” of the waste produced in the body during exercise.

Note that cycling is aerobic, so the effects may not be the same for weight lifting.

I will argue about it not working. I take 4 different kinds of supplements and all 4 of them have proven to me that it works. Let me tell you about the 4 I take and what I’ve noticed:

MusclePharm CLA Core and MusclePharm Shed Matrix:
Back in June, I weighed 262 pounds. After 2 weeks on it, I noticed that my weight had started to drop, and I was not craving sugar foods or soda. So I weighed 262 before taking it, and now 2 months on it, I now weigh 249 pounds, and all I did as a workout was bike ride 3 hours a day shirtless in hot weather. So the CLA and Shed Matrix has dropped my weight; first time my weight went downwards in over 10 years.

ON Essential Amino Energy (any flavor):
Before, I used to bike ride to my local library and back which is about 2 1/2 miles and when I got home I would crash nap on my bed for a few hours. Since taking it, I now bike ride 20 miles, extreme hot humid weather, and when I get home I still have an extra 10 hours of awake energy. When I’m not taking it, I spend a lot of my day in bed, but when I’m on it, I’m very active. So it DOES work for me.

    ISO-100 Protein:
Before I couldn’t feel my arm muscles through my body fat. Since taking it, along with protein foods like chicken 3 times a week, with those other supplements, I can feel every major muscle in my arms. I will admit that muscle growth is very slow, but I can feel my muscles now when I rub my hand along my arms, which I couldn’t before.

So for me, the supplements I take DO work. Maybe you were taking the wrong kind.

A generic whey/creatine powder has worked wonders for me but I lift heavy and do compound exercises only like dead lifts, squats and bench. I also take a multivitamin but its probably not needed since I eat fairly well and clean.

Nice man, thanks for the info.

I need to revisit the effectiveness of MV’s but if I recall they mostly get p~~~ed out. If you want to check your diet use a calorie counting app to map out a typical days intake. They break down all the macros so you can see what you are / aren’t getting.

I take D3 & C daily. People in cold climates are always D deficient due to lack of sunlight. C the body can’t make so needs to be sourced elsewhere.
