Is anyone on this site old enough to remember what Big Boy restaurants are? My dad said he’s been to one outside Chicago when he was young, and he said it’s the kind of burger place I would love to of gone and have a great cheese burger. The reason I brought it up is because I was watching an episode of Pawn Stars where I guy was trying to sell his 10-foot Big Boy burger statue, but couldn’t, and I remember my dad telling me good stories about the burger place.
Now I go to Red Robbins for the teriyaki burger and bottomless fries and a Coke. That’s a man’s meal.
So does anyone remember Big Boy?

There are a few around still. They are very rare, but you can find them. I know of one near Columbus Ohio that is still in operation.
No longer can we walk away, we must run. Remove the motive power.
Yes! Think they are still around. Haven’t seen any in Chicago but website still is active. I remember the 1950s looking little boy holding the plate and burger on his hand.
Probably could not get away with starting a male named restaurant today – feminists would claim discrimination!
Anonymous42“Abdow’s Big Boy” They disappeared in the 80s’? I went to one on Boston Road Springfield, Mass, they had the Big-Boy burger and it was stuffed with lettuce and tomato real thick and big. I only went there a couple times before they vanished. What about A&W drive in, where they served you with a tray that clipped onto your side window and you parked under a steel overhead structure reminiscent of something in the Jetson’s.

I would love to go to one of those kind of restaurants where you stayed in the car and some waitress on roller skates came and served you your burgers. I been to a Sonic several years ago and that was nice but kind of messy.
I’m telling you one thing I love is a good burger joint; cheese burger with the works, endless fries and a coke. That’s a man’s meal. That’s why I go to Red Robbins with a friend. I used to go to Applebee’s in my old neighborhood with a friend just to have a good burger. If I had my own joint with my dream man cave, I would grill burgers, fry up some fries, have a Coors Light and sit in front of a manly movie every Saturday or Sunday.
Seriously, I wish this country would go back to the good old 50s and 60s back when things were classy.
Speaking of classical burger places and the old days, I’m thinking about buying a neon picture of hotrods in front of Galaxy Diner with the blue light.

Anonymous42The closest I’ve come is with my 1960s’ flatiron grille I modified into a grill on 6″ tires with front being casters for easy moving, I mounted a swivel hinge arm to the back and above it that holds a removable propane construction torch for toasting, browning, and searing a delicious cut of steak smothered in peppers and onions!
Got goat milk in the refrigerator, fresh eggs and veggies, and someday not to far into the future I’ll be grilling grass and shrub fed goat burgers on the Mangrill!
Going, going, GONE GAULT!
There’s a Big Boy in the mid-west city where I live.
No inside seating, drive through only.
They have excellent chicken, and french fries dipped in gravy….dammit, now I’m hungry! There were 3 Big Boy restaurants in my area, but they all closed years ago now (5-10 years).
Red Robin is probably my current favorite for a burger, but I only average about 1 trip a year. Which is probably for the best.

I live in Columbus, pretty sure there is still one on Route 23 just north of Columbus. The only other Big Boy I’ve seen was up in Toledo.
@Resident Evil, the burgers at Big Boy are not worth it. Just like most chains, the burgers come in frozen patties. The food is about the same as a Bob Evans, nothing special. If you want a good burger, try finding a mom and pop place. Usually the trendy places in cities have good burger joints.
A chain that does sell decent burgers is 5 Guys Burgers and Fries. They make them to order and give you a ton of fries.I would love to go to one of those kind of restaurants where you stayed in the car and some waitress on roller skates came and served you your burgers.
"It seems like there's times a body gets struck down so low, there ain't a power on earth that can ever bring him up again. Seems like something inside dies so he don't even want to get up again. But he does."
I just counted ten Big Boys on Google Maps in my metro area. I had one in my home town, and it was the first place I ever took a girl out for dinner. I was twelve. Yeah, I started young.
Mudwhistle is right, the very best burgers are at mom & pop joints. F~~~, now I really want a burger for dinner!

Looks like if you’re not in Michigan, they are few and far between. The next highest density is around Los Angeles, but I’m not sure if they count as the real thing.
Man! Having a good looking broad bring you a big ass cheeseburger and fries on rollerskates, all Grease Lightnin’ style! I wish I could have experienced that. I go to the diner down the street and it’s some hag with a hoarse voice from smoking one too many cigarettes taking my order and bringing me burgers.

There was one in Zanesville ohio awhile back. I live in a surrounding county. I just haven’t been down that way for sometime. So I’m not sure if it’s still open or not.
I live west of Chicago and it looks like the nearest one I would have to go into Michigan. It looks like it’s mostly in the Midwest but also in California; 5 states.

I knew of two Big Boys in Grand Rapids, but didn’t realize there were so many in Michigan.
Big Boy used to go by various franchise names in different states: Fritsch’s in Ohio, Azar’s in Indiana, Elias Bros. in Michigan.- AuthorPosts
