While it’s true that Spain isn’t involved in the Middle East, Spain has been intimately involved in northwest Africa in general and Morocco in particular since 1497. That’s right, while Columbus was still sailing the “ocean blue”, only 23 years after conquering the Canaries, and only 5 years after completing the Reconquista, Spain was invading what we know call Morocco to kill and/or subjugate the locals.

The region had long aided the Muslim emirates, sultanates, and taifas during the Reconquista and Spain wanted to make sure no “re-Reconquista” in the other direction was launched from there.

Spain’s first conquest in 1497 was a town called Mellila. Spain still owns that town over 500 years later along with another called Ceuta. You should see the border “fences” between those two towns and the rest of Morocco. They compare favorably to walls Israel is building.

Spain’s control over Morocco waxed and waned over the ensuing centuries, but the region finally gained independence in 1956. So, Moroccans hate Spain for much the same reasons Algerians hate France.

I’ve been running on under 3 hours total sleep out of every 24 since around Sunday so it damn likely I’m not firing on all cylinders. Physically I feel like I’ve been ate by a coyote and s~~~ off a cliff, so psychological weariness should be part of the picture too.
