To the older Gentlemen. What type of exercise or self defense, do you do for balance? Embarrassing to say , someone 25 yrs. younger knocked me off balance with a punch to the body. For someone who grew up on the streets of a large metropolitan city. Old age is making me feel like a pussy…LOL

Tai Chi is good for balance.
Martial arts are good for balance.
    Yoga also.

While brushing your teeth, stand on only one foot and close your eyes while doing it. You’ll be surprised at how challenging this is.

    Keep alternating feet each day.

Over the months this simple method will really improve your balance.

    Try it.

    For the older gent…..
Yoga or Tai-Chi. Perhaps pilates, I don’t know that much about it.

Some of the warm up exercises we do in my Martial Arts class (I’m middle aged) work wonders for oldsters.

If nothing here resonates with you, just some simple stretching should do wonders for you.

    Ah sorry, I re-read.

    Balance and self defense.

    See above for balance.
Arm your self. Preferably with something you can deploy quickly while being on your ass.

    If allowed, a pistol.
If not allowed be creative. Think padlock tied to a handkerchief.

Just shoot em. Older guys dont have time or stamina to f~~~ around fist fighting. Besides if you are older, in a lot of places assaulting a senior is a felony.

Balance can be as simple as impoving core strength or standing on 1 leg.

A great workout if you are close to a wilderness area is hiking challenging terrain. Gets into the core and builds up the legs.

I’m even more embarrassed. I fall off balance just by putting my hat on crooked… 🙁

Any exercise done while standing or crouching will help. I’m going to try the tooth-brushing on one leg thing.

Learn to do one-leg squats and one-arm pushups. “Convict Conditioning” has a pretty good path to getting there (as does “The Naked Warrior”). Both retail for about $8 (Kindle Edition).

I taught myself yoga basics as a teenager and I just continue to randomly do calisthenics wherever I happen to be. I’ll pump gas on one leg, bend forward, palm to the ground, and switch legs. That’s called a “flamingo.”
