Is anyone here subscribed to Men’s Health magazine? If so, is it a good magazine. The reason I ask is because I’m thinking about subscribing to it, but if it’s not good enough, the last thing I want is to be stuck with a magazine for a year regardless of its price. I came across the June issue at Target this evening.

I did however learn how to drop 8 pounds by walking, and I want to try it out. Weighted backpacks.

Of the little bit of it I read, I didn’t like it. For one, health and fitness are very broad terms that encompass a variety of topics, so a magazine dedicated to health as a whole will never present you with a a significantly detailed view of a certain method of health. If you’re looking for a variety of ideas it might work for you, though I doubt they would expose you to many alternative (as in not mainstream) methods…. maybe they would, but that is not the impression I got from the little bit of their material I have read. My issue with their not presenting a detailed view of a certain method is that I think that such specialization is necessary for the continued improvement of ones health. Congratulations on achieving your weight loss goals, but be warned, it will keep getting harder and harder. This is where following a specific method would help. If you are a strongman, you can learn from more experienced strongman on how to improve the feats of strength that they do. Again, a lot of this has to do wi my own preferences, and I like to continually improve. If you are a dabbler and don’t have any specific goals, that magazine will probably suit you.

I’m a musician, so I’ll try an analogy. Say there is a magazine called Musician. In this magazine, they write articles like “How to play a major scale on guitar”, “10 simple vocal exercises to extend your range, and “wedding gig 101”. Not bad things, but you never get to explore the topics fully. Instead of Musician, I would like to specialize on my classical guitar playing, so I instead go to a local teacher of that specific style and study with him. Men’s health is like Musician. They will tell you something like “5 tips for improving your bench”, “5 simple high protein meals to make at home”, or maybe “an interview with cyclist Jimmie Joe of Sweden”, but you will most likely never achieve great levels of ability or achieve specific goals via their articles. If you have a specific weight loss goal in mind like achieving a goal to have 10% bodyfat, than you are better off getting a book that instructs you on a proven method that will help you achieve that.

Sorry if that answer was longer than you wanted. Just let me know if I ended up ranting and stopped making sense at any point.

If it is because (as the magazine title implies), you are a man looking for health, it a waste of money. I’m sorry if it sounds blunt. Good health is incredibly easy to achieve, even more with all verifiable data available in the internet. The healthiest food are the cheapest, and the best exercises does not need gym or gear (exceptions for specific sports, like fencing or rowing). I’m yet to see any honest rebuttal to that.

Of course, we all want shortcuts (steroids, diet du jour, lowcal versions of tasty “food” that remains unhealthy) or not just health, but looks (which vary around each five years). Enter total gyms, jack3d, etc.

Also, there simply isn’t enough material to publish every month for years, so they keep reinventing the wheel(if only it was the steel…) or contradicting themselves along their publication, when they does not simply comes with another unreasonable new workout/did that famous person did that grew his lats in 6 weeks!

    Also, photoshop. Photoshop everywhere.

    tl;dr: no.

Well right now I’m using YouTube channels from creditable sources. And no doubt about it, I would love to look like those guys on the front cover of Men’s Health. They look like bad-asses.

Cynically speaking, if you want to see a realistic goal for being in shape, look for Eugene Sandow, godfather of bodybuilding. Although its being told between the lines that he had good genetics, it was a time when there were no steroids, so it is a good guess to what is achievable. I would say Steve Reeves, but as difficult as it probably was to get steroids, they already existed, so. However it is, little has changed in exercises used, training methods and, to a lesser extent, diet.

What is your goal exactly? You mention losing eight pounds in your original post but now you mentioned looking like someone on the cover of the magazine.

Weight vests are great for adding to any physical activity.

Plenty of info out there for free, don’t waste your money.

What are your goals? What is your current height/weight/body fat %? Gym memebership?

I thought what I'd do was I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes...or should I?

What are your goals? What is your current height/weight/body fat %? Gym memebership?

    Height: 5’11”
    Weight: 255 pounds
    Body Fat: 22%
Gym Membership: XSport, $39.95/month but my mother supplies that because this whole weight loss thing was her nagging in the first place, but I just caught on.
Goal: Drop weight, build muscle, try to get the body I should of had 15 years ago when I was 18 or early 20s.

If you want to know what kind of body I want to rebuild myself into, look at the YouTube video below I uploaded. It’s actor Ryan Merriman (best known for Final Destination 3) playing Nikko Zond in a 2002 TV episode of VERITAS the Quest, where he is working out and boxes his father. Don’t think because I’m showing a shirtless 22-year-old guy in a TV episode that I’m gay, because I’m not and I have no hatred towards gay people. I’m showing you the kind of bodily structure I want as my own.

Another goal I want and it’s in the video and that’s being able to do some fighting moves like turn/kick, spin/kick, kick ass. I know I’m 33, and the shirtless guy in the video (Ryan Merriman) is 22 back then, but I would love to look like that. I don’t want to look like Mr. Olympia because that’s waaaaaay too much, and too much muscle is unattractive.

So you know what I’m about, and you can see my goal in the video. Let’s go from there.

Thanks. I’ll look at it later; I just got back from the health club and I’m a bit tired.

Seriously, I wish people can ask or get information on certain celebrities about what they do to keep in shape, because again I would love to look like the shirtless guy in the above video.

Skip the magazine. Just go to their website and sign up for their newsletters. You’ll get 90% of what they have in the magazine sent to your email a week or two later.

And they don’t go into enough specifics on the cover guys for you to learn anything helpful. You’re not going to get a meal plan and workout to follow from them. My guess is that most of the famous ones take a “supplement” to help out. Some version of human growth hormone / synthetic steroid / whatever. That or they are genetic freaks.

Right on man, below is my advice. Disclaimer, I’m not a nutritionist or a trainer. In my mid 30’s and been lifting since 14, learned plenty along the way. Had back surgery not too long ago so that has pushed me to dig deeper into things. Certainly not a expert and feel free to challenge anything I say.

Words of advice, there will be failures. Just try to better than you were the previous day and keep moving.

    Height: 5’11”
    Weight: 255 pounds
    Body Fat: 22%
Gym Membership: XSport, $39.95/month but my mother supplies that because this whole weight loss thing was her nagging in the first place, but I just caught on.

Thats great your mother is helping out. Do check around every now and then and see if there is a better option for you. Gyms are usually plentiful.

When starting out you will drop weight fast, just remember if it slows down that is normal and its time to tweak the diet.

Speaking of diet, you’ll want to download a calorie counter / food logger. Personally I’ve tried Loose it, Myfitnesspal, and currently using Mynetdiary. The first two got too spammy and removed features for the free app and f~~~ off I’m not sighing up for a monthly sub. The latter was free with a pro version for 4 bucks one time. Added features, you can check to see what works best for you.

Also look into a fitness tracker, I’ve been in and out of using them sine they never seem to be just right. I can recommend options if you want, thats a thread in and of its self.

The only magic to weight loss is calorie out vs calorie in. As your body fat % drops it will get increasingly harder and require more in-depth methods to reach those goals. You may think the calorie counting is retarded but its only logical if your goal is weight. These numbers don’t lie and can’t be persuaded by thought.

If you want to know what kind of body I want to rebuild myself into, look at the YouTube video below I uploaded. If I had to guess I’d say he was at 15ish% body fat, not hard to get there. Things to remember, videos/pictures often have light which projects a even more pronounced definition then what is actually there. Even though we need goals I wouldn’t fret too much on a BF%, once you get going it will feel good and help propel you further. Also shooting after a work when the blood is flowing will increase your size. I’ve seen dudes doing push ups in club bathrooms (long time ago) trying to pump up, friggen hysterical.

Tiga K already mentioned but the 5×5 strong lifts is a great place to start. That is what I’m currently doing (6 months now) though taking it slow and only increasing weight when they just get easy enough without a spot.

Side note: Always, always, always move in a slow controlled manner. Make the mind muscle connection, that will help in martial arts immensely, and feel the muscle you’re working doing the work. Injuries happen when people try and go up in weight and break form. Not only does the workout suffer they open up for weeks long injures. If you can’t keep form, drop to a weight that you can.

Strong lifts is basic and you can get by with that but feel free to add in things. I’ll type out my workout plan in another post later. Remember form and see how your body takes it. Its a full body workout and will definitely build muscle.

Sexual preference need not apply. I know what you’re trying to say but a friendly piece of advice, people often question when you make statements saying you’re not “fill in the blank type of way”. If anyone here did call you out as gay, who cares. F~~~s given is a resource, use them wisely.

Another goal I want and it’s in the video and that’s being able to do some fighting moves like turn/kick, spin/kick, kick ass. I don’t want to look like Mr. Olympia because that’s waaaaaay too much, and too much muscle is unattractive.

If you goal is to learn what they were doing then I highly suggest muay thai kickboxing. I did it for a little while back in school, lots of fun, pllllenty of conditioning.

For the diet here are some things I learned in no particular order.

-a calorie deficit over 500 for prolonged days will have negative effects. Loss of focus, ego depletion, lethargic etc. You may be able to pull it off to start but its not recommended. I was doing 1k+ for weeks at it was very noticeable and not worth it.

-For now start loggin what you currently eat, get a fitness tracker, and see where you stand. From there you can begin to attack this with real tangible data, no second guessing. A digi / wifi scale would come in handy. From there we can work out a good diet.

-No Cheat days, only meals. Always make sure to eat something that is your favorite and don’t worry about the cals.

-Your body will want to burn fat the most, its the easiest to process and provides more energy per unit volume. Make sure to eat plenty, its needed to make muscle as well.

-Eat at least 1gram of protein for every lb of weight. Don’t go too crazy over board, the body can only build muscle so fast so it can get turned into fat.

-Lean gains is worth a look up, I did the 8 hour eating window 16 off. Not hard after the first few days, takes mental toughness and the ability to distinguish hunger from the body use to eating at that time type of hunger.

-Time, bring plenty of it to the table. This is not a race, don’t set any deadlines.

haha you know I said the same thing when I started, went for the tyler durden look personally. You’ll always want more strength.

I’m sure I forgot some stuff, will post again later. Let me know if you have questions.

Do not waste your money on men’s health. I used to read those kind of magazines when i used to be a cashier. I can tell you it’s mostly lies, usually to sell your products.

    I suggest naturalnews.com, drbenkim.com, bradpilon.com, leangains.com and https://kinobody.com/

Well earlier when I was at Target and looking at this month’s issue again and all the way through, it didn’t look like anything worth buying. Yes, they had a few workouts and meal plans, but about most of that magazine was just not worth anything.

    No. I’m heterosexual.

    It’s not a gay magazine.
