I’m looking to getting into some hiking. I enjoy walking and am a bit out of shape these days so seems like the perfect thing to take up.

I’ve found a few meetup groups that do weekends away in the UK which seems perfect to meet new people but they are all ten mile+ hikes and I am in no shape for them yet and don’t want to be the loser who has to bail out half way through in the middle of nowhere!

Has anyone got any tips on where to start and what to wear? I take it I will need to buy a good pair of walking boots but what else should I look for?

I really am a novice at this so would appreciate any help

Hi Jim. Yeah, love to walk. Everywhere as much as possible. If it’s within an hour walk, I take my dog with me. Only use car for out of town. Public transport’s good here. I can climb on and have a look at all the Blu Pill depressed poor bastards and thank my God I chose to go my own way.

For short treks, you really don’t need much. Until you start getting into multi day backpacking. Personally, I went overboard into prepper territory once I started buying my gear.

I like combining camping and trecking. Germany and Swizerland have stricking country sides. Love the Alps 🙂

You can get by with a comfortable pair of cross trainer shoes while you are building yourself up to the 10 mile goal. You will only need boots in rough terrain. The shoes will be fine on pavement and parkland trails.

For boots, give serious thought to what the army wears. They have had a century or two to get it right. Ditto your backpack and basic camping gear. Leave the high-dollar stuff alone until you have enough experience to tell what is needed and best for you.

I used to be an avid backpacker and camper, and I still take long walks with my dog. It’s a great way to keep the blood moving.

I like the Southwest US best — the Grand Canyon — and the other National Parks.  First I’d go to the local parks frequently for walks — even shorter nature trails can be fun — that’s a good way to get started — simple loop trails, most parks have them in various lengths — they are abundant in the metro area in which I reside.  I don’t know anything about ones in the UK, though!  Getting a pack and getting used to the weight would also be good.  A water bladder is nice to have.  Comfortable boots are essential.

Thanks RoyDal – will keep it simple until I have a bit more experience. Got an idea for a couple of miles round trip up to a nice park in my area and back again

Just get out there and do it. Don’t spend too much money on equipment to begin with. And keep it lightweight. I’ve just hiked 550km in the French Pyrenees carrying a 7kg pack.

I love hiking. It gives me a chance to breathe some fresh air, get away from annoying people, and collect my thoughts while looking at the natural beauty of this world. I would recommend starting out with a trail that’s wide and is easy to walk on, and wearing comfortable running shoes. I’ve tried hiking boots, and they don’t feel comfortable until I break them in…plus I have to wear thick socks. I just use some comfortable running shoes. I usually hike about 6 miles in the mountains. It doesn’t feel like 6 miles because I’m usually lost in my thoughts.

I saw that I could put an end to your outrages by pronouncing a single word in my mind. I pronounced it. The word was ‘No.’" (Atlas Shrugged)
