I’ve generally not been a big whisky drinker, occasionally have had a bottle of blended Scotch on the go (Famous Grouse usually). But I’ve been reading a bit more about it recently and today bought a single malt for the first time (Glen Moray Elgin Classic). It’s a completely different beast and a lot more interesting: really complex. I realise I’m still in the foothills of this whole thing and wondered if any of you guys were particularly into whisky, especially single malt Scotch? Any recommendations for how to explore it all? I’m in no hurry and don’t like drinking in vast quantities, but I might slowly try out some of the other single malts on offer in my local supermarkets before getting more adventurous.

Maybe the Americans on here are more into Bourbon lol, I’d be interested to hear about that too 🙂

    Cheers guys

I was a fan once, but I do not self medicate at all now.
    Unless you count Caffeine.

I will stop short of saying never in the future because I have always
secretly wanted to distill something of my own creation and I still may do it.

Kind mockery at the well intentioned, but unfettered cruelty towards those would be prison guards of my creative possibilities. Used to be a single malted guy, with a preference for those distilled on the Island of Islay, but thankfully got off the sauce many moons ago. But, for the casual drinker, it’s really good!

I’m an aficionado, I’d say. I’m becoming more of a collector than a mere consumer, though that has more to do with wanting to be more healthy, strong and fit: systemic consumption of liquor tends to prevent such life choices.

As for recommendations, I would say that anyone’s palette is his own. One of the most revealing experiences for your palette would be to try more highly peated and especially Islay whisky. That tends to be a divisive factor among whisky-lovers.
Also, I would say that most whiskys are not worth more than €150. By then, the law of diminishing returns has definitely kicked in: since you’re starting out, such investments wouldn’t be for you. Instead, get multiple bottles between €30 and €70. That would give you a wide range of different tastes and qualities with which you can experiment. Don’t dip below €30: exceptions aside, you’re likely drinking absolute swill.

(Prices in Euros, as those are my experiences, but you could probably use a similar scale for Dollars)

Addendum: I checked as a little test, and a 12yo Chivas Blend is between 25-30 Dollars, which would imply my prices would translate nicely into Dollars. If it’s significantly higher/lower in your experience, you could use an exponential modifier to adjust the prices accordingly.

One suggestion, President Snow. Keep your top shelf hootch outta sight for any gatherings at your place. Once upon a time, I had some buddies over and this numbnuts comes over to me and says “Cognac and 7-Up tastes real good”. That idiot took an expensive bottle of cognac and wasted a good portion of it as a damn mixer!!

I’ve never been a heavy drinker, and I don’t self-medicate at all these days except for the caffeine in my coffee — but when I did occasionally drink, my preference was cheap Canadian Whisky.

Thanks a lot chaps, very interesting. I was reading about Islay whisky, Snow–will investigate. It’s not far for me to get to Scotland, and I hope to explore it more in the future, as well as its produce.

I don’t drink a lot and one good glass of whisky per week is quite enough for me, but I wouldn’t want to give up drink entirely, as a great bottle of wine or a decent Scotch is one of life’s great pleasures. That said, I’m sure anyone who’s inclined to immoderation would be best off staying away entirely.

Oh Lord! What a peasant haha. The thought of mixing whisky with coke brings me out in a cold sweat 😉

I experimented with some single malts for a while, but as most of it tastes and smells like creosote to me, the only ones I could stand were very expensive so I gave it up. A real good single malt is enjoyable with a nice cigar.

I’m not a big whiskey drinker, but once a week, I will drink a glass or two of Maker’s Mark. I’m mostly a gin guy. Every now and then, I will have a snifter of brandy, also good with a cigar.

Have always wanted to learn about Scotch but am afraid it would be a very expensive hobby

Over priced whiskey. Back when I thought it would be cool to be snobbish about drinking I tried a lot of different scotch. Waste of good money. The only way to go is to make your own, same thing with beer.

Funny you say this as I visited Scotland recently and went on a tour of a Whisky Distillery. The Whisky was around ÂŁ100 a bottle, and once the tour was over we got to sample a few. To me as a non Whisky drinker it was absolutely disgusting, if it was medicine people would pour it down the sink. A guy with me liked Whisky, but was by no means a connoisseur and he thought that Johnny Walker at ÂŁ25 a bottle was much nicer.

There was a Whisky shop we visited in Edinburgh and they had some Japanese Whisky for ÂŁ5400 a bottle. Is this just a case of showing off how much money you have, like wearing a Rolex, driving a Ferrari or having a Trophy wife?

I would say it has to be, just like the price of “real champagne”. I don’t mind paying a little more for better quality, but nothing tastes good enough to pay such an exorbitant price for it.

Will raise a toast to you brother! It is better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all I guess…with whisky, I mean, not necessarily women 😉
