I decided to do start something that I have wanted to do for a while now. I started a powerlifting program about 3 weeks ago. So far I am happy with some of my results. I am doing only compound exercises like squats, deadlifts, bench press, farmer’s walks, standing overhead presses, and bent over barbell rows. I am keeping my sets low as in 5 working sets, and my reps are low as in 5 reps each set. My goal is strength and muscle density. Not necessarily bodybuilding type pumped up muscles. Just as much strength and dense muscle as I can possibly gain.

I am 41 years old, almost 42. But I find that my recovery is better than when I was 18. I am eating right. Getting plenty of protein, taking it easy on the carbs. Getting plenty of fruits and veggies, the good carbs. Doing everything right this time around.

I know it has only been 3 weeks but I am starting to worry. Am I going to be able to lose some excess fat around the middle AND some excess fat under the breasts? Can I do it just from keep doing what I am doing, or am I going to need liposuction?

It’s really not that bad. But I figure if I am going to be weightlifting, I might as well look f~~~in good too. I am bothered by the excess flab around the middle and under the breasts, even if it is rather mild.

I really hope I won’t need liposuction. They say building muscle will help you lose fat. My calories are normal, I am not overeating. At the same time I am NOT undereating, as I won’t be able to build strength and dense muscle if I don’t eat.

I am bummed out. Will I really need liposuction? Keep in mind I did a year and a half of MMA training before starting this weight training program. And it helped me look good. It burned fat and made my body look a lot better. But I still have some excess flab that bothers me. Even if it is rather minor.

YES! Never too late to start brother. Been a bodybuilding for two years and I’m currently studying a BTEC Level 3 Sports Diploma (Gym Instructor course).

So, good news. You have a year and a half’s MMA training. This means you have a good foundation! My father (after going MGTOW) went from 110kg to 85kg to 91kg (but in muscle) noticing that he is 5’8…and 55. Yes, he had a lot of factors such as divorce stress etc…but if he can do it…why can’t you? he also had a good sports background 😉

Now, you cannot spot reduce fat, you can only lose it overall. How do you do this? Calorie deficit + Weight training /Slightly above maintaince calories + Low intensity, High duration cardio + Weights

You will lose strength with a deficit, but keeping it slightly above your maintaince calories will help you become leaner and maintain strength. Check out macronutrients and track them for yourself.

For me, you sound like you’re in better shape than 90% of men your age sitting on the couch depressed as ****. It’s nice to look up to older men because I remember what a trainer once said to me.

“What you want to be able to do, is reach 70 years old and still be able to tie your shoelaces”.

    Stats: 5’6
    Deadlift: 140kg 1RM
    Bench: 80kg 1RM
    Squat: 82kg 5 Reps
    Age: 17

    Good luck

These people did what you are doing and got lean.

By the time I finished the program, I was probably 10% bodyfat and could squat over 300 pounds for five reps. Also don’t forget that your body likes to store fat in certain places, so don’t be surprised when it lingers in places. The best analogy I’ve heard is that fat is like water in as swimming pool. You can’t isolate the water on the bottom and remove it. You have to keep removing water until you’ve reached the bottom.

As long as you are sweating it out in gym don’t bother counting calories. Eat what you like. In healthy portions.

Regarding losing fat give intermittent fasting a try. Last meal no later than 4 hours before bed time. Get 6 (minimum) hours of sleep if you can. Have coffee. Nothing else. Fast until afternoon. Have a heavy meal.

I tried the small many meals and breakfasts for kicking up the metabolism. Didn’t work for me. So I don’t subscribe to having breakfast in morning has any positive effects for metabolic rates.

Intermittent fasting essentially allows your body to starve and utilize adipose tissue without going for the muscles (which happens if you go without meals longer than 16-18 hours).

Half the time you are sleeping so makes it relatively easy.

You will lean out all over first before you get rid of the belly fat. I think the bitch t~~~ leave 2nd last. I am still working on my gut.
There is no such thing as one program or diet plan fits all. Experiment. Keep on working out whatever it is, but since You are over 40 like me, DONT BE STUPID and be careful with all you do lifting cause it sucks to get hurt and be down for a week or two recovering.

DONT TAKE STEROIDS OR CLEN and try and shortcut there.

Get a full physical from youre primary care doc(blood test levels and urine test) and possibly get a testosterone test to see how low you are.

    I really hope I won’t need liposuction.

Most probably you wont. The men who need liposuction have this rare thing called gyno also commonly called bitch t~~~.

You’re most probably just fat.Work out for 3-4 years get ripped, and if after that there’s still excess fat on your chest then yes then you might need the liposuction.(if you want to).The way you can tell apart the gyno is that it’s only fat and wobbly around the nipples. If your whole chest is wobbly then no need to worry. In fact it’s a blessing! Most powerlifters get fat on purpose!(just don’t over do it this is not #fatissexy)
I might sound like a downer but 3 weeks are not going to be enough for you to see changes in your body.Hell even 3 months isn’t much, but a change will come trust me.
    First comes the strength.
    Then comes muscle mass.
Then if you want you start “cutting” to look good.Regardless if you are a bodybuilder or a powerlifter change will come with consistency.

If you want a more immediate result you can start some active sport like football, boxing, whatever.Bare in mind too much weight loss will hinder your strength gains!
Don’t worry about the weight loss, the way you do things is the 2nd best way to lose weight. And it’s in a way the laziest.Your muscles at a point will just start eating away a big part of the calories you take everyday, hell at some point you’ll start thinking “How to i stop losing weight?”

Intermittent Fasting is probably the easiest way for weight loss. There are several methods. There is lean gains where you eat in 8 hour window and fast for 16 hours (daily fast), note you have use macros. There is warrior diet you eat in 4 hour window and fast for the rest although you can have light meals like vegetables or soups. This is also a daily fast.
The last one is eat stop eat which is fasting for 24 hours once or twice a week. There is no need to track macros and probably the easiest to do.

You may have a case called gynecomastia. You can lose weight but it consist of breast “tissue” that cannot be burned off like fat. A incision under the areola to remove the tissue will give you a more smooth flat contour. Head over to gynecomastia.org and take a look at some of the before and after pics and see if those cases are familiar with yours, also read through the forum to get info like you do on this one. Good luck!

Never lose sight of what brought you here.

I know for sure that this is not gyno. The extra fat is a result of years and years of not taking care of myself. At all.

I used to be 240 pounds (I am 6 foot 1) and I looked like total garbage. It’s my own fault. I did ZERO exercise, I ate like a total pig, and I drank like a fish. I have no one but myself to blame.

Now, after a year and a half of MMA training, completely giving up alcohol, eating much better (but certainly not eating perfectly), I am very happy with the way my body looks. I got down to 215 lbs. Now I have been doing powerlifting for 3 weeks and I am up to 217 pounds with no fat gains, luckily.

The extra fat, I think it will go away after a while. I just need to powerlift for several months (I plan on doing this for life). Like another member said, I will lean out all over before the breast fat and gut fat goes away more. If not……..well then I will have no choice but to get liposuction. But I won’t worry about that until I have at least 8 months of powerlifting training. I will re-assess at that time.

I don’t look bad at all. I am just seeking perfection now. LOL

Good man. After my divorce getting a gym membership and exercising regularly, mostly weight training has been a huge priority for me as well as eating healthy/healthier.

Keep it up, it’s only been 3 weeks…I’ve been working out for over 6 months, not as much as I’d like at time, but I’m still seeing changes, pants looser, shirts tighter, legs beefier. Results will come, you just need to be consistent. That is a huuuuuuuge thing. No excuses. This has been the #1 problem with me. Take a picture now and compare it to yourself in a years time, that should give you a huge boost in confidence.

I’ve been focusing on the compound lifts as well, ignoring specific stuff like bicep curls and tricep extensions etc. For those just looking to get into shape and feel better, it is sufficient.

    KEEP IT UP!

The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery every day. Never lose a holy curiosity. --Einstein
