    Gentlemen,

for quite some time I am playing around with crossbows and it’s a lot of fun. Now I am thinking of stepping it up a little and buy a high end crossbow. Does anybody of you has any experience with a rail-less crossbow? I am thinking of buying this one: http://www.shoottech.com/Page/Web/AR480MARKII

At least in theory it should improve speed of the bolt because there is no friction between bolt and rail. But how does it impact on accuracy? A rail is guiding the bolt and if there are some vibrations without a rail it could decrease precision. There are also voices who tell the complete opposite. It’s the rail itself getting the bolt to vibrate and if it’s not there you will not have this problem.

GregBo My security system is telling me that’s an attack page, designed to infiltrate your system and possibly damage it. The sirens went off, I block allot of s~~~ and never got a message like that! X-control, I dunno but I’m not f~~~ing with it and dropping my gate.

Anyway, Mr Smith, have you tried waxing or using spray silicone on the rack? Or the arrows? silicone works great on bullets and all kinds of other stuff. It’s like adding 500 trillion teeny tiny little ball bearings, gets the lead rolling.

Check Tower. We have pretty nice systems at work.

Thanks for the warning! Looks like somebody hacked their page to spread malware.

Here is another link to the crossbow: https://www.slingshotchannelstore.de/english/crossbow-ar-480-mk-ii-1/

About the question of waxing the crossbow rails: Of course I am doing this. Otherwise arrows and string would be damaged. The reason to buy a rail-less crossbow is just because I find it an interesting concept. At least in theory it could be a solution to several problems traditional crossbows have. One of my crossbows is already capable of shooting 2 inch groups over a distance of 100m (110 yards)with good bolts. I wonder if such rail-less crossbows are better? Some people claim it’s better, but I am not sure to spend 1500€ (some $1700) or more to find out myself.
Unfortunately many people think they know about crossbows, but in fact they don’t and that’s why it’s always problematic to follow tests or discussions in the Internet. They look for the draw weight and think higher is better. There are many other things as important, for instance the power stroke. How long is the way the string can accelerate the bolt? Longer power stroke means more time for acceleration, so either more energy is transferred to the bold or the acceleration is smoother and this means less vibrations and more accuracy. It’s more or less similar to firearms, there are many parameters to consider and in the end it’s not just engineering but also a kind of art to find the best compromise and not every compromise is suitable for every use case. To me it’s a very fascinating topic and I recommend all “gun-nuts” to have at least a look in this area. Bows and crossbows are very interesting and under some circumstances better than firearms. I like to have both, but I really started to enjoy bow and crossbows. I would not go to war with it, but for sports I prefer crossbows or bows. Even in a SHTF-situation I think bows have certain advantages.

    This is also very educational:

Arrows go thru things bullets are not able to penetrate and vice versa.

I thought a sonic air rifle was a toy until I got one. Blows the insides out of squirrels! Even has a sonic “CRACK”.

I like the fact that my crossbows are quiet. The pistol crossbow is good for taking out small stuff like rabbits.

All my life I've had doubts about who I am, where I belonged. Now I'm like the arrow that springs from the bow. No hesitation, no doubts. The path is clear. And what are you? Alive. Everything else is negotiable. Women have rights; men have responsibilities; MGTOW have freedom. Marriage is for chumps. If someone stands in the way of true justice, you simply walk up behind them and stab them in the heart-R'as al Ghul.

I considered pistol crossbows to be toys but then I’ve seen this. They test stuff for the zombie apocalypse (not too seriously) but they do it on an anatomical correct scull model and this tiny pistol crossbow was still able to penetrate.

It can be useful for close quarter, small animals and even as a backup weapon.
