Antibiotics and Birth Control

I am not a medical doctor and nothing herein should be considered medical advice.

I friend of mine got his girl friend pregnant while she was on the pill and she doesn’t believe in abortion.

Her excuse was she was taking some antibiotics at the time. I don’t know if this is true (other than she looks very pregnant) but I thought it was worth sharing. If we have any medical people here maybe they could elaborate.

Everyone “knows” that antibiotics can interfere with birth control, but what everyone doesn’t know is that only certain antibiotics do so.

Your friend, Jan, is most likely the victim of the all-too-usual paternity scam. Because he was stupid enough to trust a woman with birth control, he’s now on the hook for 18-22 years of financial rape. Her claimed antibiotic use is merely an excuse, she wanted to get pregnant to entrap him.

About the only option left to him is to contest paternity with the hopes she was f~~~ing around behind his back.

I didn’t want to pry as he was not happy about it. 45 and about to be a first time dad. Sort of changes the whole direction of his life.

All he told me was that she was on the “pill” as a contraceptive and that she had to take an “antibiotic” for something and Ooops. Of course that’s what she told him.

I guess she didn’t know that antibiotics can affect that…of course being a woman here on a green card, she gets older every day, has a child from a previous relationship, no college degree, no career, my friend makes good money…

I don’t know.

Edit: Yes I think he was trapped. But it is a cautionary tale for the rest of us.

It’s part of the counseling legally mandated with any prescription. You get a script and you’re told both verbally and in writing about the medication’s side effects, plus what other medicines, substance, and foods can cause interactions with the prescription. You’re told when the prescription is issued and when the pharmacy fills it. The pharmacy staples a document containing all that information to the bag containing your medicine and you sign another document stating you were informed and understand.

The guy was tricked. She would know that antibiotics can make birth control less effective, and she would have consulted with the Doctor who gave her the antibiotics, if she didn’t want to get pregnant.
