A recent systematic review comparing the excess risk of hip fracture related to antidepressant use showed that this commonly prescribed medication may have a substantial impact on the rate of hip fractures in the population.

Some of the key findings included:

Overall users of antidepressants appear to have a 70% higher risk of hip fracture than non-users.

There were differences in risk depending on the type of antidepressant used. Users of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) were at almost 90% higher risk and users of tricyclic antidepressants (TCA) at 60% increased risk.

There was a higher hip fracture risk in first time users as compared to patients who have been using the medication over a longer period of time.

Large differences in the quantity of antidepressant use was found in the six countries studied: the average antidepressant daily use was highest in the USA and lowest in Italy.

The potential contribution of antidepressant use to the rate of hip fractures was found to range from just below 3% for Italy to more than double (7.2%) for the USA.

Making people aware of the risks is not shaming. Your anecdote hardly trumps the peer-reviewed research. In addition, Welbutrin is not available as an anti-depressant in many countries. SSSRIs and Tetracyclic are far more common.

    for people that need meds,
    they should take them.
the info is good to have .
    .
again i recommend lifestyle changes before medicines.
    .
people who NEED anti-depressants and don’t take them,
    often commit suicide.
or homicide like the kids at Columbine..
they were taking prozac ..i think it was prozac..
too often doctors just prescribe meds without really understanding what’s going on in the patients life.

How do you determine who needs them Hitman? They are doled out like sweeties and most people who take them are ignorant of the side-effects. I say that as someone who was on them for nearly a decade and is now paying the price.

Yes, i read the leaflet that came with them but the side-effects are deliberately downplayed. Medical trials are routinely dropped so side-effects aren’t published. GPs are also known to accept “freebies” from pharmaceutical companies.

Doctors aren’t omnipotent and all-knowing. My GP and a Psychiatrist told me they were no long-term side effects. They were wrong. At the end of the day, knowledge is power. It’s better to know the risks than to not know.

I’ll make it clear i’m not talking about Wellbutrin but SSRIs and Tricyclic Antidepressants. Welbutrin actually improves bone density. This may explain Stealthy’s sausage fingers?

I’m on an SSRI but I found the most significant and effective antidepressant was getting rid of the x.

Had people tell me how happy and light I seemed. Looked 10years younger. different person.

Changing your environment is the best way to deal with depression in my experience. Glad you’re feeling unburdened.
