I took my older daughter out to dinner last night. She’s a freshman in high school. She tells me that there was a fight in the freshman hall last week. Two guys beat up another guy. She wasn’t in the hall and didn’t see it. But apparently everyone just took out their phones and videotaped the fight. No one stepped in.

I asked her what she would have done if she were there. She said probably nothing. Then she said maybe she would have tried to step in. I told her NO WAY! You never get in the middle of someone else’s crap. There is no need for you get in the middle of anything that doesn’t involve you, EVER. You don’t know why they’re fighting, you could get hurt, you could get in trouble, nothing good can happen FOR YOU by getting in the middle.

She thinks about it and says “Yeah you’re right.” Then I said “Seriously, you wouldn’t have taken out your phone?” She says “Yeah, probably.”

Always nice to have a chance to give her a little dose of red pill when I have the chance.

On another note, the principal of the school was p~~~ed because all of these kids posted the video on line. He didn’t want the school (himself) to look bad. Instead of worrying about the problem he is more concerned that people saw the truth about what happened at his school.

Hmmm, tough call. I suppose it depends on the circumstances and the parties involved. If it was a bare knuckle fight involving two bruisers then, I agree, let them vent some testosterone. If it was a couple of yobs terrorising an old, defenceless granny, I’d feel compelled to intervene as best I could.

The reason is that people can and will get sued if they help, because they’re stepping on the toes of ‘professionals’. I’ve heard people that has been brought from the brink of death, suing those helping them. No joke. That’s why people just recording stuff, to prove they didn’t do anything wrong….. It’s unbelievably sad, but what can you do with a corrupt court system and a crooked population that will sue because of hot coffee?

Too true. The combatants have been known to join forces and beat up the peacemaker. She should call the professionals and let them deal with it. In addition, @skeptisk is right about the dangers of a lawsuit.

I once worked in a place where something similar happened. A whistleblower reported some infraction to upper management. There was a company policy for this and it was encouraged, officially at least.

They started a witch hunt to find whoever it was. Happily, it was an anonymous report and they never caught him. The fix was less effort than their attempt to retaliate at whoever embarrassed them.

Whistleblowing is a good thing. Getting caught by a narcissistic bureaucrat is not.

Some people really do deserve what they get.

I agree with the poster that said it depends on the circumstances. Context is king most of the time.

I’m not following what the ‘red pill moment’ is here. Is it, don’t get involved when it’s not your business? Don’t assume you’d behave better then someone else?

    Ok. Then do it.
