Steve Simoff’s daily commute is easy on gas, but hard on shoes. The 61-year-old custodian treks 35 miles each way to and from his job at Lakeside Casino in Osceola, hitching rides when he can, but hoofing it most, or sometimes all, of the way. He’s been making the long walks since 2006, when he had car trouble and his wife had a stroke. To keep the paychecks, he had to get to work, with or without a car.

I read this with a growing suspicion about his home circumstances and was proved right near the end of the article when it was revealed that both his wife and son are unemployed. This kind of story makes me livid – there is nothing apparently physically wrong with the wife and son (near the end of the video the kid pulls a cell phone from his pocket!) and yet they’re content to let this man face possible danger and accidents walking some or all of a daily 70 mile round-trip, so he can support them. I wish he’d wise up and face them down, get them to get jobs, any jobs, and then maybe he could afford the gas. But I see at the end that a GoFundMe page has raised more than $15,000 for him, but if it were me I’d refuse to accept it until wifey and son have gotten jobs.

GG, sometimes it’s sad that you can’t chose your family (son). Many of today’s problems are a direct result of f~~~ing lazy freeloaders who can’t conceive of the idea that they need to contribute to society. Very Sad.

The harder the fight the sweeter the victory
