I know some here have complained about never hearing anything positive.  Ok, here goes….

It’s a gorgeous day in DFW, TX.  The sun is shining.  I just spent 90 minutes in the gym slinging iron.  I have my little boy with me.  We are planning a trip to Houston next week to see the Johnson space center.   Life is good.  The obvious was not mentioned in this thread as it has zero bearing on my day today.

    Have a glorious day brothers!

That’s great news Soulman, hope you and your son have a great trip next week too.

Had a small setback at the start of the day today but it cleared up important stuff, and ended up being something good, because It had been slowing down on my personal goals a bit, some times it’s bad to have too many different doors to take, and you end up missing the important one in front of you.

Was also somehow able to do 2 pages of sketching while watching The Raid 2, once it starts rolling you can’t look away.

    Soulman,

taking son to space center is probably the best possible thing you can do.  Aside from the usual attraction there, you can take a short shuttle a couple of blocks to the hangar now housing the Saturn 5 rocket.  It’s worth the trip to see it.  It’s laying on its side, but standing, it was as tall as a 35 story building.  It’s big enough in diameter to contain a bus, and you can walk up and touch it.  50 years ago, a bunch of bad ass MEN built it with slide rules, filled it with over a million pounds of rocket fuel, climbed onto it and struck a match…

They flew it a couple hundred thousand miles to the moon, where they left their boot prints and a flag, and then flew it home guided by 1960s technology using transistors in a computer with less power than a current cell phone.  It is one of the most inspirational examples of what determined MEN have done.  Try to be sure and see the movie about it that is shown there.

Look, it's not my fault that tornado dropped a house on your sister. Now get back on your broom and get your ass out of here... and take your monkeys with you

Absolutely agree!  I haven’t been to the Johnson Space Center in over 10 years.  It sounds as if some things have been moved around?  That Saturn V used to sit outside in a big greenbelt.  I remember thinking it was sad that such an awesome machine was sitting outside rotting in the Texas weather.  Hopefully they are taking steps to restore and preserve it.  IIRC that was one of the mission rockets that got canceled due to NASA budget cuts in the early 70s.

I am hoping that this trip will spur my little boy’s imagination.  He is just starting to realize how big the world is.  I want him to understand how big our existence really is!  He is a spirited child and will need me to help him stay on course I suspect.  I was a real hellion at a young age but then again my dad wasn’t around.  I’m looking forward to getting out of DFW for a few days.

SoulMan  enjoy your trip. I have to say I am a little envious..I did want a son myself.. Although I love my daughter very much I wasn’t a part of her life as much as I would have liked.. we talk online now more than we have in years..She just bought her first car..I am a bit scared about it….1996 crown Victoria with the distinctive spotlight holes…ex-police..

    Soulman,

An activity you can do with your son, is weightlifting.  As long as the colored somewhat padded dumbells are light enough for him to get a minimum of 40 reps, without stopping or pauses, he should be OK. Forty rep min hits mostly vasculature/stored muscle glycogen etc. At his age he’ll have minimal testosterone, but much growth hormone. Growth hormone works best perhaps in the 25-40 rep range, but not lower.  This is why, a couple of decades ago there were about seven celebs with torn pecs, “Heck, if I can now, on GH get 40 reps with xxx lbs, I know I should be able to get a much higher max one rep.    ripripteartear.     GH strengthens the joints/ligaments/tendons, but not so much the belly of the muscle. Conversely over history, before recombinant RNA DNA technology made GH widespread, the injuries were centered more around pulling the tendon off the bone, or actually pulling the tendon and a chunk of bone out of the bone….this was when testosterone/anabolics without GH were the norm.

so anyway your son, after a short amount of time and results, could really get hooked. just make sure, Never two days in a row, and try to balance the choice of movements.

IMO the single most effective book for you could easily be “Super Squats.”    It visciously distills a workout wherein how much you grow is directly proportional to how much pain you can take.  Don’t even bother with endorphins, this amazingly quick workout will have gallons of dynorphins flooding your bloodstream. It’s the best feeling in the world, energized, invigorated, bulletproof.

    hope this helps.

For your son, light enough to get a forty rep min is for safety and avoiding too much stress on his frame.

Soul Man I was reading through this thread again today and it made me want to chime in. This past weekend I took my two boys on their first camping trip (Grandparents land) and one of my buddies brought his two boys as well. We fished for a while and walked the land. They got to use a firearm for the first time so I got to start them off right with safety. I bought a little Rossi 22/410 single action, single shot rifle and took them step by step through how to safely handle and shoot with a firearm.

Later we had a camp fire and cooked over it and as it got dark we roasted marshmallows over the fire. Not too long after that we got rained out but it was a great trip and my boys are already asking about the next one.

Anyway just wanted to put in a positive post.

Don’t know how old your boy is, Soul Man, but I hope he loves your trip. I always got a thrill learning about space…still do, actually.
